What Makes The Venture Bros The Best Desert Island TV Show

The title is a lie, I really don't talk about the desert island thing at all. Probably should have done a second draft on my first attempt at a video essay. Give me a shout out in the comments if you get the Natalie Imbruglia joke!

My headcanon for why Doc is a little more chipper in the pilot is that we're seeing him actively high on amphetamines and the rest of the time he's coming down or he's stopped taking them as much. This idea leads me to my favorite line in VB and probably all of fiction: "You were a daydreamer, a sass-mouth, and, not infrequently, a bit of a gigglepuss. Somehow I doubt twenty years of amphetamines and failure have done anything to improve that."

You totally ought to do review of the original Johnny Quest. All episodes are on KZread, free. They are gorgeous, well written and are the original from which our beloved Venture Brothers draw so much inspiration. The production schedual was intense, the backgrounds were matte paintings, the musiuc still slaps today (the soundrack can also be found on KZread.) and the High Sci-Fi concepts are interesting and thought provoking. Fun Fact: Jonny Quest was originally Adult Animation, and didnt become associated as childrens animation until much later reruns on saturday mornings. Go Quest Crew!

I didn't get into this show until season 7 was airing, and it absolutely blew me away. I honestly can't think of any other TV show, let alone an animated comedy, with this level of character development and continuity. I'm still kicking myself for not giving it a chance sooner.

I binge this show regularly. There is so much to this show I just cannot get enough. I just recently noticed what the password for H.E.L.P.E.R.'s synthesizer may be. From s1e1 Rusty is trying to reach the boys. I noticed that when he said Dave before Dean right after, I thought he just forgot Dean's name. However, in the background you hear what I first thought was the score, but the moment Rusty said Dave the the music stops. The tune is the same(or similar) in s3e8 Tears of a Sea Cow

I found this show because my brother was really into TF2 so he played the game "Poker Night at the Inventory." Then the second one came out and it had Brock. I thought he was funny and wanted to see where he came from. My world was forever changed.

That's another cartoon I miss (sorry, animated show, heh). I didn't really get into Metalacolypse. (However it's spelled). I liked that Brendan Small was "Action Johnny" on The Venture Brothers. Edit: And that H. Jon Benjamin (Coach McGuirk, Jason) was The Master.

Good to point out, TVB pilot was animated in Flash if I'm not super mistaken. which must've been a pain in the ass considering even when you looked at the BEST flash animations at the time on Newgrounds or something TVB looked like an actual show already. If I'm wrong someone here will know.

Excellent video sir! It took years of watching the shows in bits and pieces before I watched it from the Pilot to Season Five. I have been amazed at the world building, call backs, and passion of the hard core fans. I agree about what you said about the show not spoon feeding the viewers. Seemingly throw away lines or comments have huge implications later, I still say calling the henchman that would become Venturestein is a MASH reference. It is a smart, funny show, that makes references, like MST3K and Rifftrax, that it doesn't matter if you get the reference but when you do, it kills. I love VB, can't wait for the movie, and hope for more years with the Ventureverse!

I think the pilot is canon but can be thought of as lightly retconned. I find Brock to be the most out-of-character there, coming off not only more detached but also genuinely psychotic. It's what a hack, uninformed writer may have flanderized him into after season 1, but instead, we saw the reverse happen as he blossomed into a deep character.

The Venture Brothers is definitely my favorite animated show. And one of my favorites of ANY show. As soon as I saw the goofy pilot (the original one, not just the "official" one), I knew it was going to be good. I was like, "oh, wow, what's THIS thing? I like it already." Just the line deliveries and the jokes and the fact it was a goof/homage to Johnny Quest got me hooked immediately. And of course as it progressed, I liked the characters also. Dr. Orpheous is my favorite. I also loved Home Movies and BoJack Horseman as well. Edit: I'm going to miss this show. I hope Jackson and Doc can do some more of it in some iteration in the future. Like a special or something. Or even a *real* final season. I liked the finale movie, but I still wanted more. Maybe with AI developing more, they can have their own website and just have some kind of AI generated animation and just tell a few more stories. Won't be as good as the great job the animators of the show did, but it will be on J's and D's own terms and timeline. And they won't have corporate BS'ers cancelling them. Still can't believe after all that time on the channel, and the fact that they were on their final season anyway the network cancelled them. C'mon. They could've let them have that last season.

To be fair they do make enough of a point about rose being triple threat, maybe not by name enough but rose is constantly mentioning her time as a hero, Whereas stars and garters they didn't really need to notify that, it's more of a background detail if you notice it given he's not really present for much more than a character of the week

While the show does have retcons and continuity mistakes, it's amazing how the show managed to work these in its favor. ReBoot season 4 introduced Bob having sympathetic feelings for viruses and believing that they could be reformed, which greatly contradicts how Bob was willing to go all out against the likes of Megabyte and Hexadecimal during the earlier seasons. Venture Bros managed to take things like seemingly one-off characters like St. Cloud, who Billy didn't even interact with in the season 1 yard sale, have him make a few additional background appearances, then break out into a full blown character as Billy's own archenemy. Or things like Blue Morpho appearing way back in season 3 with a design that was pretty forgettable, and while it wasn't explained why looked different, fans can chalk it up to Morpho just having a "party costume" of some sort, as we know he had more than one costume from the season 7 three-parter. Hell, the PROBLEM being revealed to be the resting place of Jonas Sr. was simply insane. It seemingly had no purpose way back in Careers in Science, and probably would have stayed as such if the creators hadn't remembered it and that they never explained just what the hell its true purpose was in the original episode.

I'm only a couple years younger than you and was into a few AS shows (Home Movies and Metalocalypse in particular) but never this one for some reason. I remember seeing the episode involving their college days on air circa 2006-7 and thinking it was funny, but for some reason never went deeper than that. Too much Halo and WarCraft to play. I now own everything on DVD/BluRay and wish I'd gotten into this sooner than a year or so ago.
