Fawk, I died.

An early flag-bearer of that was Earth 2150 - a rather unknown but great rts where you had 180 days to finish the construction of a space ship to get off from Earth before it explodes - while fighting off enemies who want the same.

When a meta campaign is exectued well like in DoW or XCOM 2 it's just so amazing because of the replayability and unpredictability.

Excellent analysis and points are well made. Personally I like meta campaigns. But Linear Campaigns with cutscenes can be very fun as well. CnC and COH have some of my favourite campaigns with enjoyable cutscenes and stories.

@@michaeldacut6296 eoaw is a 4x, not an rts with a meta campaign. The difference id say is in battle unit production, though I would still probably consider bfme a 4x.

EBFD was one of my fav rts but meta-campaign-wise it really had no impact which route you chose. My pick would be LotR:Battle For Middle Earth1

Have you looked at Star Wars Empire at War as an example of RTS games with meta campaigns?

I think the best implementation of meta campaigns is Tom Clancy's end war. The scaling of the campaign is perfect. The fighting becomes desperate. The AI is incredibly fun to fight and it has all the positives you mentioned for dark crusades. Whatever faction you choose will have its own strengths and weaknesses and you can choose to play into their strengths and exacerbate your weaknesses (have super fast European units that have low armor and damage) or try to mitigate your weaknesses for a more well rounded army (upgrading armor and damage for Europe) There is also story telling that happens every turn on the metamap that gives context that isn't reliant on your actions or territories controlled but gives world context and lore. Overall if you haven't played End War it's not too late!

I remember playing that game on the xbox 360, I loved the campaign, and all the upgrades you could get for your units. The AI was really fun to fight, I remember it feeling very realistic back then.

Campaigns where your resources carry over between missions have another upside to having all missions matter whether you win or lose: if you lose a battle but deal significant damage to your opponent you might very well come out on top in the long run.

Dark reign needs some love :)

So this is why he only ever hurts good people. Because all bad people can hurt him to death. He needs food. Bad people know. That a human needs food. Starving, and hungry.

Aren't you just talking about open-ended strategy gameplay, or gameplay-driven story here? Why use the word meta for this "metagaming is making decisions based upon out-of-game knowledge, whereas strategies are decisions made based upon in-game actions and knowledge"
