What makes our food system vulnerable?

"Our food system is a living system of people, plants and animals, all responding to changes in their environment. This makes it vulnerable, since an event in one country, can have unforeseen consequences elsewhere. For example, the war in Ukraine caused skyrocketing gas prices, making fertilizer unaffordable. As a result, farmers are producing less food, making our food more expensive. It's easy to feel small in this complex tangle of connections. As a consumer, how can you make a difference?
According to geoscientist Dr Brian Dermody (UU), it is useful to look at our food production through the lens of complex systems. What do we need to understand about it to tilt it toward a sustainable alternative?"
