What makes Oasis sound like The Beatles?

Everyone knows that Noel & Liam Gallagher are heavily influenced by The Beatles. But what exactly is it about Oasis's music that makes it sound so 'Beatle-ish'?

    He's right though, it's The Masterplan's chorus that has excactly same structure to Whatever's main riff. U 'll notice it if your playing Whatever's chords and start singin "Dance if you wanna dance.. etc." to it. It'll work. Still think the author was a bit sloppy puttin the wrong title there in the video.

    Oasis was always paying homage to The Beatles. They never made it a secret that they were massive Beatles fans. Oasis took the Beatles sound and developed their own take on it and made it completely their own. The Oasis music from more than 25 years ago still holds up and will be timeless in much the same way the Beatles music is. Some music, you just never grow tired of listening to. The Beatles and Oasis are perfect examples of that.

  • @jamstonjulian6947
    @jamstonjulian69474 жыл бұрын

    Good video. Tbh, as a big fan of Oasis and an even bigger Beatles fan, it's always annoyed me the somewhat lazy way in which people tend to label the former as rip-offs of the latter, when the vast majority of their sound, chord sequences, arrangements and melodies are nothing like The Beatles. It's just, as you say, they wear their influences very much on their sleeves. And it's usually just a riff here or outro there, a pretty obvious homage, rather than an entire song they're copying. Their most blatant rip was probably for Cigarettes & Alcohol, where the intro is literally the riff to Get It On by T-Rex, but after this riff is finished the rest of the song is completely different. And it's not like they don't expect people to notice this stuff; it's deliberate. In my opinion the Beatles influence is pretty superficial; lots of lyrical references and the odd hook or arrangement. Their more pertinent influences are bands like The Stone Roses or a lot of the shoegazer bands, as their first two albums are awash with distorted guitars and that "wall of sound" sort of production. There's also a heavy blues influence, which can also remind you of The Beatles, because of those distinct dominant 7 chords. Pretty much every Brit Pop band was heavily influenced by 60s British Invasion music, it's just some of them were maybe a bit smarter about it than the Gallaghers, who really just wanted to make good rock 'n roll music.

    I´m a Beatles fan and I love Oasis. Anyway, a lot of fans of The Beatles despised and some still despise Oasis because of that big lie of "Oasis is a copy of The Beatles" The excuse ? It´s always the same: the intro of Don´t Look Back In Anger. Oasis put in their melodies some "touches" of Lennon&McCartney melodies, but they always had their OWN SOUND. If somebody is going to listen to Oasis for the first time thinking he´ll listen to a "new version of The Beatles" he´ll get a big surprise when he listens to Definitely Maybe. I don´t understand why a lot of people put Oasis in an underrated place because they think "they copied or stole from The Beatles" when that´s not true. Those of us that belong to the Oasis generation, saw them live and bought their records, know very well it was not like that. Some tribute to The Beatles in some lyrics ? Maybe. Some arrangements ? Maybe. But Oasis WAS AND WILL ALWAYS BE OASIS, they were not at all a copy of The Beatles.

    One thing I missed in your explanation was the use of cadences. For example, for lack of a better term, I call it “sharpening the dominant chord”. For example, if a song is in C Major, a normal cadence would be F>G>C, but Beatles would sometimes go F>G#>C. Another example exists, which I’ll call “Majoring the Dominant-Parallel”. If the song is in C Major, the dominant parallel would be E Minor, but the Beatles would play it as E major. Eg C>E>F>G>C (all major). These cadences can be heart often in oasis music also.

    I watched recently this documentary about the L.A. Laurel Canyon rock scene in the 60's. In it, Beach Boy's Brian Wilson talks about the album Pet Sounds which is famous for influencing Paul McCartney (and The Beatles) to do Penny Lane and to a lesser extent Sgt. Pepper, as I understand it. However, Brian Wilson said in that film that he was influenced by The Beatles's Rubber Soul (or was it Revolver?) to do Pet sounds! It goes around and around. I wouldn't doubt for a second that Paul McCartney was influenced by Oasis on his more recent works.

    Hey man! Love your videos! Im super curious if youre using some fancy new plugin to isolate the vocals or if youre just using old school phase cancellation? They sound so clear with no artifacts! Or you just have multi-tracks of those songs kicking around? 😂😂😂 cheers and keep up the good work!

    When I learned "Don't Look Back in Anger", it wasn't just the intro, but also the chord changes throughout the song that made it feel like I was playing a Beatles/Lennon copy. But as long as you're open about it and use it with appreciation I think it's fine.

    Really great video ! I would like to see you do a video about some tricky, inventive chords progressions. I think Arctic Monkeys are really great at that (especially the last album where they get some jazzy vibes, for example : Golden Trunks, She Looks Like Fun, Anyways the b-side. Their older stuff as well where they get easier chords progressions but it's still inventive and surprising for example : Only Ones Who Know, No1 Party Anthem...) It'll be very interesting I think. Anyways, thank you for your videos it's always nice.

    I'm always amazed at the lack of serious critical analysis of Arctic Monkeys music. They're immensely talented musicians. Alex Turners lyrics too just blow my mind. I know they're really famous and everything but I still feel they are kind of weirdly underrated.

    To me, the most obvious influences of Oasis are: Stone Roses Beatles SLADE Sex Pistols Neil Young La's Stones T-Rex And then you can see things of great musicians here and there, from electronica, from soul music, from punk, folk or whatever they were listening in that moment but the core of their music is inspired, in my opinion, by these musicians and made in their very own way. The influence of the Beatles is huge but it's not the only one, I guess the image, the whole references in lyrics, the fact that they mentioned them all the time and a handful of songs very beatleesque (Up in the sky, whatever, don't look back in anger, roll with it...) did the rest to oversize the debts.
