WHAT MAKES IT WORK? #20 "How a Segway PT Works" tubalcain

Ғылым және технология

In this episode, I attempt to explain what keeps a SEGWAY scooter upright. My grandson Andrew demonstrates how to ride it.
My friend DAN loaned the scooter to me.

The electronic "gyroscopes" are quite neat designs. You have something like a pendulum on a spring, very very small, etched into a silicon die. The pendulum is also one half of an capacitor. It get excited by static electricity. If nothing moving, the pendulum is oscillating symmetrically and the capacity is changing in a symmetrical sinus pattern. The system reads a symmetrical sinus wave. If the system is decelerated in one direction the pendulum needs a more time to go in one direction than in the other, this will shift an deform the sinus wave. When compared to the default wave you can determine the acceleration. All this calculation is done on the same die.

Nice video Sir. I had opportunity to ride a Segway about ten years ago. That early unit id not have the pivoting handlebar setup. Weight shift was the way to steer. Had a ball and picked it up pronto. Like here, the mount/dismount was the most difficult part. They were around 12K then as I recall.

Nice video. How long did Andrew practice with it? He seems to have mastered it already. It's tragic that the owner of the company accidentally ran off a cliff with one. My guess is it had to do with the automatic balancing feature -- lose your balance and lean too far forward and there's no stopping it until you can regain balance and lean back. You could put a panic stop brake on the handles I suppose, but that's almost always going to end up with a face plant into the pavement. It's better than running off a cliff or out in front of an oncoming bus though.

I had a "trip" as you called it about 7 years ago on one while backing up. The thing went into full speed in reverse to try to catch me as I fell and I wound up laying on the floor with my foot wedged in it while being dragged in circles by that thing to the point that I thought it was going to rip my foot off. Look up the safety record of that thing. When it goes haywire things can get ugly real quick. As someone else pointed out. The owner of the Segway company died when his took him off an 80 foot high cliff. Chris

The few Segways I've seen 'in the wild' were used by airport cops... and in my opinion made them appear particularly pedophile like. However, as shadowdog500 experienced, they seem to have a safety record way out of proportion to their numbers. I can recall hearing/seeing numerous such horror story reports through the years... They really hyped the things before they were released, thats for sure. I was irritated with the things before I even knew what they were.

To paraphrase Einstein, you can't cure stupid. Segway falls into two camps; utility users and thrill seekers ... both of which will have experienced and inexperienced operators. the difference between segway and a skateboard is segway looks quite similar to a walking frame and thus is more tempting to middle aged guys with more disposable income than the average skateboarder.... so of course there are casualties

Segways are indeed fun. I have one of the early versions which steers with a twist-grip on one of the handle bars, rather than by leaning the stalk. Unfortunately, mine is showing some sort of fault (and consequently will not power up), and I've not got it repaired yet. I taught my dad to ride it when he was 85. bit.ly/bill_meek_segway

I can assure you that learning to ride in turtle mode will cause you to fall when you put it in normal mode. If you were to ever lean the steering that much it will spin around so quickly it will break your neck. I suggest you learn to ride in normal mode and make VERY small inputs until your brain associates how little movement it takes to steer. In normal mode it is so sensitive it seems it is reading your mind.

"each is much more powerful than the PC you currently sit at"(sic), not quoted verbatim. This is strictly untrue as the Segway and hoverboard type of mechanisms use the same type of sensors and processors which are designed specifically for a certain type of input and output. While they are capable of of processing information at a rate exceeding that of the human mind they are nowhere near that of your even low end modern processor. It's just a case of the processor is hard wired for this particular use case.

He does enough work just making and editing these videos, and most all of us think they are perfect the way they are. I would rather he not do the over screen you're talking about. All you accomplish when making suggestions like that is to put a seed of doubt about the quality of the videos someone makes, and when someone puts pride in their work, it's an a$&hole thing to do. We're lucky mrpete shares anything with us.

I was disappointed in the Segways when they came out, I don't know if you remember but there was a lot of hype about them before they came out (because it was a big secret exactly what it was) and people were saying they would revolutionize mankind and how he traveled! People were speculating it was some kind of hovercraft since the guy that invented them was supposed to be some kind of genius. It is a neat thing, but overpriced and nothing more then a stand up electric scooter, not exactly revolutionary.
