Why do two classic authors of the English Canon need to be presented as, "One better than the other"?

I cannot compare the two writers. My main takeaway from this is this video is the beautiful quote:"Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same."

I don't think Emily Bronte is better than Jane Austen, they are just different.

The exercise in traditional debates of addressing questions such as “why is this author better than this other one?” serves a very simple function: to encourage participants to both critically evaluate and celebrate the qualities that best distinguish the authors. Giving this reductive, hyperbole-based format to any analysis can make it even more rigorous and stimulating, especially since it’s quite obvious how impossible and therefore stupid the question is. Yet, I think this video best exemplifies how good answers can turn out to be.

Who cares which is better? They both authored unique fiction and were therefore not following the same path. Individuality matters.
