What Makes A VIP Car

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Vip cars originated from Japan but eventually migrated to the U.S.A. Form and function often get thrown in the equation when VIP cars are discussed but what actually makes a VIP car? In this episode of wheel school, Alex describes what makes a VIP car, where it originated from and how it impacts the scene today.

    He's right that the VIP scene divided up into different sections over time. The "original pure VIP" is basically only White, Silver or Black full size V8 luxury cars, mostly Toyota, Lexus and Nissan. Its basically a classy car with a nice interior for the mod boss to ride in and can escape the police. This is why in the "original VIP" the cars are not stanced out with negative camber but rather have good flushed fitment with good grip and also had performance mods (again escape police). This was the whole point of the original VIP. However - things change over time. The first early change was when VIP cars started not being V8s and full size sedans. When people started doing it to V6, I4 and smaller cars which is fine because it still embodies the simple Original VIP form. But VIP scene really went off the rail when it got crazier with lights and super negative camber. These things aren't truly VIP but rather than VIP Style/influenced. A mod boss would not ride in a car with negative camber, with purple body paint and lights that stand out. That isn't avoiding detection. Lol.

    VIP style has nothing to do with the yakuza or "mob bosses" at all, it simply started off with young people wanting their domestic luxury cars to look like AMG and koenig cars then it developed from there and took inspiration from haiso styling and more. In the beginning there was indeed a lot of black, silver and white cars but also red and blue. There's no "true VIP", it's a lot broader and flexible than most people claim.

    @@TokyoDesperado You have no idea what you are talking about. The Yakuza started the VIP scene and then it lead to young people copying the style. The VIP style was never about copying AMG cars... What VIP style car looks like AMG cars? Since when do AMG cars run negative chamber and lay frame?

  • @TokyoDesperado

    @TokyoDesperado

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@NissanSkylineVR30 Back then the yakuza would drive stock foreign sedans, they didn't customize their "business" cars cuz it would obviously bring more attention to them and they weren't some goons that randomly would have to escape from the police. I guess heavily influenced is a better word but that's literally how it started, but you would know that if you were familar with the first VIP teams out there like Black Cockroach, VIP Company and King of Kowamote car. I didnt say AMG cars were the reason for the crazy camber and lay frame stuff, that came years later. As I said VIP style continued to develope and quickly become its own thing. The whole yakuza thing is completely made up to make the origin story seem more exciting, anyways I made a reddit post with some early VIP cars so you can see for yourself lmao www.reddit.com/r/JDM/comments/s8jjco/the_beginning_of_vip_style/ Edit: Also I have translated a bunch of japanese car magazines that cover VIP stuff from when it started to now and listened to interviews about it so I would love to know where you've gotten your "facts" from.

    @@TokyoDesperado Oh wow. You gotten your facts from reddit, magazines and such. So you have never lived in Japan and saw it first hand? Apparently you are the only one here that thinks the Yakuza didn't start the VIP scene. The point is - VIP style cars never wanted to be like AMG cars. Do you even understand the difference? AMG cars were designed by MBenz to race and for the track. They were hand-made engines. VIP style is just street scene of modding cars. No one mods a car to make their car look AMG. AMG does not come with negative chamber. That was my point. You would make more sense if you flip the narrative. Yakuza did VIP back then but then moved towards more luxury stock base cars like the LS500/S-Class.

    @@NissanSkylineVR30 I'm the one who made the reddit post and no I don't live in Japan, why would that even be relevant. Maybe I should change my name to "Nissan Skyline" in japanese also so I can act like I live in Japan. Anyways look at any interviews with the Junction Produce guy or anyone else in the VIP scene and you will see that you are wrong and the whole yakuza thing is nonsense. I dont understand how you have such a hard time understanding what I'm saying, I never said VIP was about making a closest possible replica of AMG cars, only that they were heavily inspired by them visually in the beginning. "origin spec" VIP cars, the very first VIP cars had mostly AMG style wheels and styling because young dudes wanted to replicate that styling on their domestic cars (these cars were new so there wasn't a big aftermarket for them yet). Then around mid to late 90s the big wheels and heavily customized exterior and interior became the norm. VIP was never a "yakuza" thing, it was always young people who wanted their cars to be both cool and luxurious. That's how it started but for some reason people try to tie in the yakuza or bosozoku with anything related to japanese car styling. The yakuza does not drive LS500s but you are correct about the s-class, they mainly drive Alphards, priuses and other domestic cars that dont attract attention. Again, please show me any kind proof that the yakuza made VIP styling, just a single credible article or anything else that's not made by some american guy who's just reading of the first thing he found on Google. If you still refuse to believe me then read through these. www.webcartop.jp/2020/12/625886/ news.yahoo.co.jp/articles/3b1df1baa5279491d5423a6d3664d188a967caa3?page=1 www.carsensor.net/E_special/070201/02.html ja.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/VIP%E3%82%AB%E3%83%BC

    I don't think people understand what a TRUE vip build is. What people get confused is VIP car builds and VIP INSPIRED car builds. Many don't know the true difference and that's what makes them amateurs. You can't vip a coupe or convertible, it doesn't work that way. VIP has to be big body sedans such as the president, cima, crown, or majesta. Everything else that isn't in those categories are basically vip inspired. And why would you listen to Urban dictionary? They used the word "rim"....it's actually called a wheel 😂 the rim would be the lip on the wheel. Tsk tsk tsk!

    I own a vipstyle car and I love the scene. Most of the people in the scene are mature or older. One thing I love is they don’t tolerate a lot of immaturity that typically come with the import scene. Also it is an expensive build as well just for an example like chaser taillights running $1500+, bodykits $2000+,most static VIP builds with suspension component from companies like Tdemand who specializes in camber, short knockles, coilovers and more will cost you more then an air suspension setup. $7-$10+. In the VIP scene quality is very important. And using low quality parts rep wheels, or knock off parts is extremely frowned upon and have a low tolerance. If you come in the scene with a positive vibe then all is welcome but if you come for scene points definitely not the scene you wont to come into. It’s pretty much the scene you enter once you’re like a grown adult but still enjoy building a project.

    Might catch heat for my choice, but 02 Acura RL. (Yes I meant to put the R there and not a T). It’s basically a four door upgraded and rebadged Acura Legend. 96k miles on the dash, currently doing a VIP build on that.

    I love the idea of VIP cars. Given I commute and daily in my modded car everyday, speed doesn't really matter too much to me. Considering getting a GS350 next and giving it a VIP inspired look sans the camber.

    Old school, functional VIP cars are still awesome. There's some guy rolling an imported, rhd Soarer in my town and it's sick. He has it lowered, flush, and then just blacked out EVERYTHING. He parks it up with a collection of "fix it" citations for his tint all across the dash. Which you can barely see, because again - tinted obscenely dark.

    Vip build ls400s got me into cars. Then when I couldn’t find a 400 and was desperate for a car I bought a g35 coupe. On a mission to do a vip influenced build on a coupe, focusing mainly on attention to detail and interior upgrades. Some may find it stupid but, you know, it is what it is. That’s the cool thing about this community. There’s something for everyone. Definitely going to do a ls400 build sometime tho
