I work at the Doubletree in Monroeville and we are undergoing a $7 million remodel. We currently have 16 accessible rooms in inventory. I am sending your video to our engineering staff who are coordinating the remodel so they can hear your opinions and suggestions. Thank you for posting this!

How cool! Where is Monroeville? I live in the north side of WA State. Have or are all the Doubletrees going under construction for wheelchair access? Covid is still around, are you open for business in WA.?

It looks and sounds to me like this hotel went beyond the written ADA to get a wheelchair user in to consult on many of the details you mention. Good for them, good for you, good for all. Thanks for showing us.

I'm new to wheelchair usage. This information will be very helpful when and if I ever stay somewhere. How nice it would be to have such ease, even at home! Being in a chair is a lot more difficult than I ever thought it would be.

I use a walker. When I stay at a hotel the accessible rooms are always far from the entrance to the hotel. The walking is painful. I'd like an accessible room close to the entrance so I don't have to walk.

That place is REALLY well put together for accessibility, for both rooms. What chain is that and what location?

Hi, nice video. My daughter is special needs and has been a a wheelchair for 16 years. The 2 main issues I have are carpeted floors and beds being to high. She is unable to maneuver herself. She is in a manual wheelchair and I am her motor. I transfer her from wheelchair to bed. Since I am only 5 foot tall, the bed being too high is an issue when I’m transferring her. Pushing a wheelchair on carpet is not easy. I prefer laminate flooring. We stay exclusively at BestWestern hotels and have for over 40 years. Most of them have done great jobs at accessibility. I always offer suggestions if there something that can be addressed or suggestions for their next remodel. I also give positive feedback after each stay for the things that I found were helpful and made our life easier. I look forward to watching your other videos.

Thanks for the great video. These extra high toilets have only come in during the last 25(ish) years and I cannot use them. It used to be a standard toilet with a riser seat for those that needed the extra height. Now, at least for me, trying to get an accessible room is a nightmare as I need an ADA room but with a standard toilet. Having said this, I know it's better for other people.

A few years ago at a Holiday Inn Express, the bed was so high I could not get on it. Their answer was first, a step stool. Um, if I could climb steps I wouldn't need this room. Second, they offered an employee to help me with the stool. Like I want an untrained stranger in bed with me. No again. Wrote a letter to corporate but never heard back. Also in another hotel, the shower seat in the roll in shower was so far from the controls, you couldn't sit and even reach the hand held or adjust the water. No husband to help. Scariest shower of my life. I spent the rest of the conference week taking sponge baths. And why no one can ever figure out that bathroom mirror. Makes it hard to style your hair. I love to travel but it is such a hassle not knowing what you are really going to get when they claim to be accessible.

I can also relate to some extent. My brother and I went to stay in a room where they said the property is differently abled friendly bla bla bla when booking a room.. After we went there, there was no wheelchair also. They said it is damaged. My brother cannot stand. His legs are very weak and very thin. He always needs assistance. He moves by crawling inside our house.. We cannot afford for a good wheelchair. His fingers are also deformed so he cannot use crutches also for walking. There should be two people to lift him wherever we go. So when we went to the room, the property manager said only the disabled person should stay in the disabled friendly room. He saw the way we carried him and still the manager told like that. I don't know what they think of us. Now,imagine my brother alone stays in the room and what if he wants to attend his nature call. Property manager was not ready to provide an assistant also.

if i ever win the lotto and probably won't but if i did i'd build or remodel a motel for wheelchairs and make them more accessable especially the high beds. i love to travel don't get to much anymore but the beds are a hard thing for me to get on i can slide off but not on.

We are a traveling family of 4 with husband in a wheelchair. Some of the things we have encountered are accessible rooms with King bed only. That doesn't work for a family. It's hard to find a double queen ADA room. Another issue we run into is the bed situation..they are either too close together and it makes it difficult and sometimes impossible for him to transfer to the bed. We also had to have a hotel employee come and help me move the TV stand in an ADA room so his chair would fit in between the TV stand and the bed. Another big one is the bathroom doors. I wish they were ALL sliding like that. They have no idea how much that helps. If the door swings to the inside of the bathroom and the bathroom is not very big, it is nearly impossible to get in/out unassisted. Also, if the sink is too close to the toilet, it can be difficult to transfer to the toilet since the wheelchair can't get right up beside the toilet. He has weak arms as well as legs so he has to get close to the toilet to transfer to and from. No ADA bathroom should be too small for 2 people to be in there. I have to assist and there are so many times we barely both fit with the wheelchair in there. We have found that very few hotels have it the way it needs to be and should be. I wish there was more reform.

What ppl fail to realize is that there is ppl in more Severe wheelchair users like myself I feel like there should be an electric lift for the bed situation so that I’m not too heavy for my caregiver to pick me up due to my hand function not working because I’m a quadriplegic it’s easy for you to transfer yourself but not me

I’m like you Danielle I don’t use a shower chair either I tried and they are definitely uncomfortable but when I was at camp many years ago they had shower benches like in that over room I liked it better but I constantly bash my head off the grab bar behind me that was the only time I used a shower bench at home I’ve tried a shower a couple times for easier transfers in and out of the tub and to take it easy for my asthma but my wheelchair is shorter then the shower chair so transferring wasn’t actually easier so when I get in the tub I just crawl in hold the grab bar and have my mom lift my legs over the edge and then when I get out I’ll crawl over the edge and my mom grabs my legs and when I get on the towel I call it my dead fish move because I look like a dead floppy fish when I get out

I find the bed is way to high & the fridge should have not been under the fridge as a person in a wheelchair needs hallow space to get closed enough to place their food inside the Microwave.

Not sure what hotel you are in but the hotels in NJ have beds so high there is no way my 4'11' paraplegic wife can get onto any bed....the sole reason one rents a room!
