While Flight of the Bumblebee is objectively annoying, it serves it's purpose. It really does sound like it's name suggests.
That's a very excellent answer. I am a songwriter and my Producer's priority is to give the song the right feel to reinforce the song's message. He made me buy into that and it does make for a better song.

My dad actually used flight of the bumblebee as music for out baby films, so I love it. It takes me back to when I was little 🥺
Being able to play, being technical is admirable. You don't have to put it into every song. It's your gas pedal. You don't drive with the pedal to the floor all the time. The verse part is telling the story, it should be more like talking than screaming or going crazy with the vibrato on every word. Sing to me don't scream at me. Talk to me don't vibrato at me. Nonsensical lyrics generally tend to be shit. Don't then repeat them over and over again. Maybe consider changing them or making an instrumental song if all you can come up with is shitty lyrics. Instrumental hey, that's where you might show a little more of that technique. *Variety is the spice of life. Mix it up.* Try not to suck. Try not to annoy your listeners. Try not to be grating to your listeners. Even if that's a formula that has worked for some tosser bands, just don't do it. Don't be a sellout.

This is good advice! But I am lead footed. All in all I’m trying to be a better producer. So I’ll take his advice and yours to heart! Thank you

Always giving us the best shit out on YT for beginner musicians. True words have been spoken. Recently met a guitarist, keyboardist and soon to be bassist at my school... WHO ARE IN MY CLASS, so expect to see a lot of positive comments by me😁love ya dudes
One thing I'd like to add on is that people should use allegory. Going back to your break-up example, King of Pain (The Police) works so well because it's not just saying that someone dumped me. Instead, you have to look for an answer, and you can even make your own.
Great tutorial guys!! Loving this. I'm teaching a module at a music college and have come across your video in my research. Really well presented and conveyed. Thanks! Damien

I always use the example "Go play Dream Theater's best song for a room of people, then play just the "na na na" of Hey Jude. See which one people enjoy more."
Thanks man
ty for the great tip
I love your channel, speaking truth 👏 plus you got a hype man in the background 😂
So I like Poker Face by Lady Gaga not because it's catchy, but because it's energetic. Actually that makes since now that I think about it because the things I look for most in songs are 1. That song being energetic 2. The song being catchy or 3. The singer at least having a good singing voice. A song needs to pass at least one of these three tests in order for me to like it.

good video guys
What if it makes you feel the emotion of happiness because you like the song so much? Like with any of my top 100 favorite songs.
good songs are self writing muses looking for the right writer to recognize them. They enter a writers mind completely composed and take only a few minutes to become fully realized. It's the principle of least action. I have written many songs only to find the underlying muses have also been used by others in songs that become hits. Nirvanas "Come As You Are" is one of those hits I composed long before Cobain found it..
Now imagine a catchy song, a complicated and a song that gives good feelings, for me that would be Rush E, besides being a meme song, i find it quite nice.
I like this, good video. If you could create a similar video based on the merits of the actual music instead of the lryrics though, that would be amazing.
What I think makes a good song is well if I like or not. Most my “songs” just given happiness
I think the advice about soley relying on personal experience is pretty limiting and boring. The musical Wicked was an emotional rollercoaster, and obviously the writers did not actually go to Oz. They wrote about very real emotions, but not about real experiences. Songs like Defying Gravity and For Good definitely make the audience feel some strong emotions.
In response... Well... Kind of... You're a bit right, but not wholly right. Reusing the same themes and all that can get generic, yet Taylor Swift comes out with a breakup album and it's a chart topper. So it's not always just about the lyrical content, like this video implies. It's also about the instrumental content, and this is where I think more fail than they do lyrically. I think that a generic song is felt more than consciously noticed... Does that make sense? Like, I listened to a new to me band today and I listened to about 5 songs. I literally didn't pay attention to a single word, but the feel of it made me think. "Meh... They're fine." and yet the comments were full of "OMG! This is the best thing since sliced bread!" I can't even put my finger on why I felt this way. The music was fine. The singer was fine. It was all just fine. I wouldn't be offended by it playing anywhere I went. But it wasn't catchy to me, and it didn't make me feel anything. And I can't place why. There was nothing wrong with it, but there was also nothing great about it. It was technically accurate and I think they could play at least small venues just fine, but that's not what a band wants to hear. What is it that takes a band beyond competent and into awesome? And that can change depending on the person, I think. I'm solidly in the hard rock/metal category in my preference, though I can listen to quite a variety of music (just no rap/R&B or country), so there is a lot that is fine, while there's also a lot that is awesome. I think a lot of it comes down to musicality such as dynamics and chord phrasing. Making good music is hard. Acceptance or rejection is a balance upon an ethereal line.
Music is first for musicians second for normal people, Complex and hard music are automatically good, you're just not good at them, don't comment on them, don't comment on music.
What a guy
you know its funny I cant think of a single break up song iv ever listurned to?? OH NO THATS RIGHT! smoke gets in your eyes that was one
I kinda disagree when you said song writters got to write about things he's experienced once, I think songs where the artist incorporate a different persona, even if that isn't him at all are pretty amazing. Not every single song that are like this is necessarily good, but some of the greatest records ever are like that ((English is not my first language, maybe I didn't expressed very well))

You can definitely write with a different persona, but you still have to know what you're talking about, otherwise your lyrics come across as shallow

I'd argue that most peoples dislike of modern pop music is down to the over-production and instrumentation styles. NOT the song writing. On the whole, the song writing of most modern pop is top-tier, and that's coming from someone who also really dislikes 99% of it.
Your wrong about through the fire and the flames. The beat flows well and the lyrics are well written
I know this video is 2 years old, but KZread is so awful. I searched the title of this video word for word and the search results were not relevant to this topic really. I mean, I got great songs recommended to me, but I've heard them so many times already. The point of my search was to listen to someone's opinions on what makes music great for them. Can't believe I had to scroll through 30+ videos to get what I was looking for 🤦🏾
Oh my gosh its British Rivers Cuomo

I think what he means is it has to be artistic but I also disagree I think there is still ofther ways to scale if a song is good or not
But what if everything you've went through and thought in your entire life has already been conveyed by a song before? Then you just have to accept that you are nothing special, just another generic human being who won't mark history with his songs🙃
