I think there is a big difference on the quality of a movie and how good it actually is. I think that Ghostbusters 1984 is a 10/10 on how it makes me feel but only a 8 on the quality. I think enjoyment comes first and when I reflect on movies, I tend to think of how it made me feel rather than the quality. This is the reason why I don't think ratings work as both categories have to be thought of when rating a movie and critics have to draw the line between the quality and the fun factor. Just watch a movie and decide how much you enjoyed and how it made you feel is my method. I agree that movies are the most subjective art to ever be made.
I think "Amadeus" is a perfect movie
For me there are: 1. The Empire Strikes Back 2. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly 3. The Shining 4. Pulp Fiction 5. The Wizard of Oz 6. Taxi Driver 7. Terminator 2: Judgement Day

1. My favorite starwars movie. Last time I did like episode 4 more though. 2. Probably the best western ever 3. Not a big horror fan 4. Good movie, but not much more 5. Worst Judy Garland movie I’ve seen so far 6. Cool 7. Best Arnold movie shared space with Total Recall though. Cool that people have different presence to movies!

SPR is a 9 for me because I can't stand the D-Day scene. However, the movie seems somewhat incomplete without it. Because of that reaction, I personally think a 9 is actually more respectful than a 10. It shows how well Spielberg got his message across. It's a plus-minus.

In my opinion, a 10/10 film doesn’t just create a few characters or a plot worth our investment. I think it’s the world which the picture creates for us. One example I like to think of is La La Land, which uses the opening number and the use of settings and extras throughout to provide the background with character and emotion. Inglourious Basterds approaches this differently by showing us multiple sub-plots in different nations in different languages to highlight how huge the world (and Hans Landa’s influence) really is. Combined with the plot, cast, editing etc. I believe these two are perfect films. But then again, Batman ‘89 created a spectacular world for the audience, but the film falls short in too many ways to be 10/10 (and I believe that the Nolan trilogy isn’t 10/10 either because Gotham city is basically Chicago). Scott Pilgrim is probably my favourite film and I believe that it ticks every single box to be 10/10, 30/30 or whatever. But then again, that just shows that what is being discussed is subjective as hell and I am just sat here at 4 minutes past midnight whilst self-isolating from the rona.

The creating a world part is one reason why I think Mad Max Fury Road is a 10/10 and the best blockbuster action movie of all time.
I often cry while watching emotional movies. However, i rarely do so on the second viewing… there are however movies that never fail to make me ugly-cry. These I consider automatic 10/10’s. The same can be said for comedies. If I laugh just as much watching the movie a second time around as I did the first time; it’s a perfect comedy. The Dark Knight is another 10/10 for me, but it didn’t evoke an emotional response in me. For these cases I’d argue it’s the imagination it evokes in the viewer; the spark that gets your creative abilities flowing despite not wanting to necessarily get into worldbuilding or filmmaking that makes it 10/10. If a movie can make me feel all these categories of things at once, even on a second viewing; emotion, imagination, etc. on top of a perfect production (directing, editing, acting, etc.), then that would be an extremely rare 11/10, a truly perfect movie; but those don’t come around more than maybe once every few decades or so, so it’s far more convenient to just call near perfect movies 10/10.
Basically a film 10 / 10 is a film you cannot quit watching, and after a time you re-watch it with (almost) the same pleasure.

Great Video again Matt. Hope to see more videos in the future. Especially more movie talks on topics like this or like your Star Wars talk. Maybe Harry Potter or something. Great effort as always.
It's all subjective, but I created and use this system for rating/ranking films and it helps me to at least stay consistent. Rate a film on these 3 qualities using the same scale for each (for example, a 5-point scale): Impact - How much a film affects you in the way that it intends to during, but especially after, your viewing of the film. Rewatchability - How much you want to watch a film again for entertainment value and/or to gain a further understanding of its qualities. Technical "Goodness" - The quality and synergy of all visual and audio elements of a film. Then add the total of the three ratings (for example, if each is rated on a 5-point scale, then a perfect rating would be 15). If two films being directly compared would have the same total, then break the tie by comparing their Impact ratings directly. If still tied, then compare their Rewatchability ratings directly. If still tied, then simply choose which film you prefer.
Anytime Back to the Future is on, I am then legally obligated to watch the whole thing, no matter what I'm doing at the moment. I just love that movie so much
You deserve way many more subscribers, this was a really well put together video!

Man, I give this video a 10/10. You really made me understand some of the reasons why I consider some movies great and some not. The rating system makes so much sense. Really informative. I will be watching again.
The Dark Knight, Jaws, Die Hard, Back To The Future, Shawshank Redemption are all 10/10
The Matrix is the best all around movie ever made. It was pretty much a male version of Alice in Wonderland on acid. It revolutionized cinematography, writing, special EFX and sound EFX. The Matrix was very stimulating and made you think. It was the Matrix that started the whole Red Pill & Blue Pill trend in the dating world...lol. To me the Matrix is the bench mark of how a action movie should be made, just like how Michael Jackson is the bench mark of how music should be made.

Wait a Minute, you didn't mention Terminator 2, the only movie I've watched maybe 20 some times to find an error, but there isnt any. Perfect Story/Acting/Effects/Action/Balance in Funny-Seriousness/Lighting/Timing/Camera/Sound/Editing/Ending
Hunger by Steve McQueen deserves so much more respect no film captures a feeling of determination, hate and violence like it. It's the one film I didn't even have to meditate on to call perfect the credits rolled and I knew it was perfection. It's got some very graphic violence in it but if you can handle that you should 100% watch it. It is a masterclass in camera movement, shot selection and production design.

As far as movies made recently I would give Arrival a 10/10.
For me I can think of 7 10/10 movies (In no order) 1. The Godfather- Francis Ford Coppola 2. Goodfellas- Martin Scorcese 3. Hunger- Steven McQueen 4. American Beauty- Sam Mendes 5. Chinatown- Roman Polanski 6. 2001 a Space Odyssey- Stanley Kubrick 7. Pulp Fiction- Quentin Tarantino In terms of movies I'd say are extremely close 1. One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest- Milos Forman 2. A Clockwork Orange- Stanley Kubrick 3. The Godfather II- Francis Ford Coppola 4. Taxi Driver- Martin Scorsese 5. Inglorious Bastards- Quentin Tarantino 6. Seven- David Fincher 7. Rope- Alfred Hitchcock For me it's a matter of if someone asked me to pick out a flaw in the movie could I do it if the answer is no it's flawless, the filmmaker achieved in my eyes film making perfection. I think no two people will have the same movies featured on their lists because perfection in film (If it exists) appears differently to different people.
I like to think of movie ratings as a big U because sometimes there are bad movies that are so bad they are good and thus go up the rating on the left side, while genuine great movies go up the right side.
A guy who worked at a video store who studied film whose first name is Quentin and whose last name rhymes with karenpino-is what it takes.
“Every aspect should have its own rating system” it’s funny you say this, because about 2 years ago, I created just that. A kind of rubric. I named it the “Bradymeter” because my name is Brady and its a percentile rating so it’s similar to the Tomatoemeter. * Story: 20 * Characters: 15 * Pacing: 10 * Acting: 15 * Dialogue: 15 * Soundtrack: 15 * Cinematography: 10 I have used this to rate over 200 movies now. Every aspect of the movie gets its own number based on how important I felt that aspect is to create a great movie, all the numbers add up to 100 because that’s what we are rating the movie out of. To explain the number further if you still don’t get it, I would be rating the Story out of 20, the characters out of 15, and the pacing out of 10. The reason I have the Story só high is because I’m considering aspects like Storytelling, script adaptation, and other aspects on top of just the story in itself. Tweak the system how you feel, and use it wisely.

That's really interesting. I made something similar a number of years back for myself. I call it my "Deciunity of Film Aspect" where I grade each individual quality out of ten, so a 100% is hypothetically possible. Score (soundtrack) Visual aesthetic (visual quality and focus) Cinematography (sense of presence) Relatability (how real characters feel) Intrigue (a sense of curiosity / wonder) Interest (something to think about) Feeling (appeals to emotion / spirit) Entertainment (viscerality) Impact (memorability and impression) Purpose (artistic, didactic, propaganda, ⁊c.)
I know no one will agree with me, but The Last Unicorn is 10/10 movie. It's a fairy tale about so many different things. It stirs so much in me, and I grearly admire it.
This video deserves atleast a million views
Citizen Kane had some problems, probably do to the times. The part were he is talking about the Gas light replacing candles seemed unneeded other than to show off the tech of the time. I liked it because it was ground breaking first for a lot of things that we come to expect in movies like transitions between scenes, lighting to show mood and so on. Some of the transitions like the parrot's eye one were clumsy but for the time it was ground breaking.
Movies I consider a 10/10 1. Spirited Away 2. No country for old men 3. Princess Mononoke 4. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back 5. The Lord of the Rings movies 6. 12 Angry Men 7. Fight club 8. Ratatouille I dont think the Irishman or Citizen Kane deserve a 10 out of 10. The former is too long and the ladder doesnt have any characters that I truly feel attached to; to me they're all just meh. I haven't seen Goodfellas, the Godfather, or even many of the other films mentioned in this video; nevertheless, I will give them a watch and my list might change.
A great movie does more than what's expected to deliver. Take for example, "Saw". It's a great movie that does what it needs to: disturb you and shock you - and it does just that. Saw has terrible acting and dialogue, but it does what it needs to and leaves you feeling astounded. That's not saying Saw is a perfect 10/10, in fact I'd probably give it a 8/10. But it's not the movies that are great in all departments. Vertigo, The Shawshank Redemption, and Gladiator are movies I would consider a 10/10, but not really. Real "perfect" movies leave you with a feeling that lingers long after. Like the melancholy calmness in you after Schindler's List. It's the empty feeling of despair after The Shining, or the small head nods as the music from La La Land plays in your head. The want to do something loud and violent after Pulp Fiction. The disdain for authority after Fight Club, the urging yet accepting sense of morality after It's Such a Beautiful Day and the vast appreciation of where we are now after 2001: A Space Odyssey. It's movies like this that are really, truly the best.

Great choices... BOOGIE NIGHTS is my perfect movie. It literally has everything. Drama, comedy, thrills, tension, melancholy... the acting and cast is great. There are ZERO wasted characters or even bit parts. It starts and gets you into it right away and never lets up until the end credits-- and even the end credits you want to stay for at least the 1st 4 min or so, cuZ maybe the best thing about BOOGIE NIGHTS hits as soon as the credits roll-- the excellent music! The soundtrack and score are one of the best ever And ps, in terms of “horror,” SAW is a goddamn MASTERPIECE... people talk about the surprise/twist ending for THE SIXTH SENSE or of course THE USUAL SUSPECTS, both GREAT, excellent movies in their own right, but the ending of SAW is flawless! NO. ONE. saw that ending coming. Add on the perfect music for the end, and forget the whole horror movie thing, you got a completely incredible MOVIE on your hands when you see that for the first time
The perfection is in imperfection. The goal should not be the perfection as a state. That imperfection of the movie, if it is discussed and argued among people, that I consider to be the trait of greatness. That trait could be anything - amazing storyline (LOTR), amazing story (Shawshenk redemption), awesome technology (Avatar), well-conveyed idea (Interstellar). But what I like the most is unique style of the movie maker, from epic Tarantino to niche Kusturica. They are not trying to be perfect or somehow attract the viewer, they are the next level. For them, movie is an art SEPARATE AND INDEPENDENT from everything else. There is no big idea in Pulp fiction but we all love it. So my grading system is like poo (Fantastic 4?..., Catwoman?...) - imperfect (Bourne) - perfect (Troy, Avatar) - great (Men in black 1) - the art (Shawshenk redemption, American beauty, First two Terminators, Pulp fiction, On the Milky Road, Malena, Mad Max). Star troopers is definitely underestimated because it is the art as it is clearly not what it looks like but rather a subtle and obvious at the same time sarcasm.
I liked your video because of its truth. I mean you were very objective and tried not to be ever subjective thus telling the us the well discovered facts and segregating the inconspicuous opinions. You were precise, bold, specific and believed in what you were saying was the absolute truth. I loved the tone of your voice, basically like 90% of the manner in which you conducted your speech. You pointed out lots of examples and I found this great. You kept me also engaged even though I felt as if I had no say or room rather, because you were too busy trying to point out that everything is subjective and no one is really wrong in their right but that people are just different and would naturally like different things. Again, this is why I felt I had no room, because no matter what I'd say, according to your overall philosophy - I would be right anyway. I feel this is your overall message that a simple 10/10, simply isn't possible or is an impossible point to get at - that is objectively and due to flaws of human nature. So yes, though I loved what you were going for here and a lot of the things you certainly did get them right. You did not really answer your imposed question, "what makes a movie a 10 out of 10?". This is what I believe was wrong with your answer. Think about it, if everyone is right then no one is wrong. And If no one can be wrong, then no one can be right. For an example, I'd give your video a 9/10. Leaving a room for you to see, an assumption that what I'm saying basically is that you were somewhere wrong along the way. So in contrast, however, if your answer - that everyone's answer is right, then why do we even make such a thing as a rating? Why even bother of the words "imperfect" or "perfect"? Or of numbers 1 to 13 like you say are just numbers, if they all mean the same thing? So in conclusion, what I am saying is that there is a definite answer for everything and not knowing it, does not mean there isn't.

hey back to the future is my favorite too. followed by die hard, it’s a mad mad mad mad world, vertigo and the day the earth stood still in that order. i mean that #5 spot fluctuates but
This is what comes to my mind when I think about a perfect movie (for me): -Does the movie achieve what it wants to achieve? -Do I like this movie? -Is this movie a visual spectacle? -Is the music and sound design also a spectacle? -Is this movie original, meaning it doesn't follow a certain overused formula for films? -and is the story entertaining, while also trying to tell a relatable, meaningful or impactful story?
i am a few years late to this video and most discussion that will have probably happened but in my eyes, the few 10/10’s for me are: The Pianist Goodfellas There Will Be Blood Spider-man: Homecoming. This is my list and although, it is all over the place none of them are my favorite movie. The movie that always sits right with me is Gone With The Wind.
I think the dark knight is a 10/10 movie because that is basically the movie you just described
This is a great video. It's really making me thinking of re-evaluating the way I look at ratings for movies. In my honest opinion, I don't think a perfect movie exists, it's all a matter of personal preference. Like you said, there's a difference between a 10/10 movie and your favorite. My personal favorite movies are films like the Mortal Kombat and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films. Do I think they're 10/10? Not exactly, they're more of a 7/10, technically. But personally, I consider them 10/10 since they achieved what they set out to do. To me, the films that come even close to 10/10 are The Empire Strikes Back and The Godfather, like you said. Of course, there are also 10/10 films that I personally won't enjoy all too much. Citizen Kane, for example. I will admit, I used to be rather close minded about these ratings. Sites like IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes generally tended to dictate how I would feel about a movie. When I would give something a score, I would try forcing myself to feel exactly what the score dictates. That's not the case anymore as I will often rate a movie, and it could differ from how much I enjoy it. Plus, I don't really look to movie rating websites for how to feel about certain movies anymore. Thank you for this video. It actually encouraged and inspired me to look at movies again.
My top ten favorite movies in alphabetical order are: Braveheart Bringing Up Baby Dolores Claiborne Forrest Gump Innerspace Magnolia Maltese Falcon Psycho Purple Rose of Cairo Singin in the Rain
Movies that are 10/10 to me Adaptation Punch Drunk Love Memento Reservoir Dogs The Shining American Beauty And a few more that I don’t want to list so this comment isn’t too long
I rate movies on how many times I watch it throughout my life. If I have seen a movie more then 100 times I then consider it a perfect movie, a movie that makes me want more and more without getting sick of it. I have probably seen such films as Back to the Future, Star Wars, The Dark Knight, Jaws, and Lion King I have seen close to a thousand times in my lifetime, and those are my favorite films. Any movie I only want to see once failed in my opinion, even if the movie is good.
10/10 for me 1). Spirit away 2). The wind rises 3). Seven 4). Roman holidays 5). War and peace (ussr) 6). The Godfather 2 7). 8.5 Those are the first that I could thing of , but there are plenty
For me 10/10 movies are: Interstellar, Coco, Ratatuille and so much more movies that i do not remember now. There are so much movies that are for me 9/10, and they are mostly animated.

I agree with everything you’re saying and don’t understand rotten tomatoes... if every video had a mandatory +200 reviews or everyone would review only their favorite genres. Maybe we might see a broader popularity in our movies for a over the top ok movie to watch for that person interested in it or for the movie makers to decide what is popular but... sometimes movies come out before their time or don’t have a fan base just yet. And some people find toilet humor in comedy degrading while others find it hilarious... it’s hard for everyone to have the same favorites but maybe with people that share your interests or again only people reviewing the same genre...
This might be my childhood talking but Toy Story is 10/10 for me as is Spiritef Away for different reasons

The room deserves an Oscar
Saying that what makes a 10/10 movie is if it makes you feel what it is trying to make you feel is dumb. What if the goal of a movie is to make you bored so it’s just a black square which no audio would it be a 10/10 movie
To solve the whole subjectivity thing, there should be a set of rules or criteria, that a film must accomplish to be "objectively good", because yes, films and art is usually subjective. The thing is, you can like a film, and it not be objectively good. For example: take the room, from what I've seen, I love it because it's so bad, but in an entertaining way, that I enjoyed. With an example like that, however, objectivity, and subjectivity, are easy to differentiate. It's harder when it comes to films like Birdman like you pointed out. That's why I'm proposing, a basic set of criteria, that a film must possess, in order to be objectively good. Unfortunately, I haven't figured them out yet. Edit: Your video explains it better
What is the film shown at 10min? I know I've seen the actor before, but I can't remember where.
Great video, was expecting to press back and go browse reddit after two minutes when I saw that is 13 minutes long and has 250 vies, but watched it till the end and enjoyed it. Cute little nod to Paterson at the end - great little movie. Agree with you on most of your points. For me Magnolia is 10 out of 10, or Tree of Life is 10 out of 10, I love those movies. And ofcourse Godfather and Goodfellas are just timeless masterpieces. Can you do a video about this year's Oscar movies? 2016 was a great year for movies, all nominees for best picture/cinematography/directing are trully awesome movies. No oscar bait bullshit that everyone forgets about as soon as it hit the dvd like Lincoln or 12 years of slave.

Back to the Future is also my #1 favorite and I do consider it to be a 10/10, so I'm curious what makes it a 9 for you? Wizard of Oz is a movie I consider to be 10/10 but it's not one of my favorites, but maybe that just means it's due for a rewatch given that it's been years for me.

Patrice and the rating system......is genius.......😂
As a film buff, I give lots of 10s. If there are any flaws with a movie, it's usually that the characters talk too soft or something that wouldn't deter my emotional reaction to it. My Grandma is much more strict about 10s, there's only 13 movies that she calls perfect that I am aware of. Those 13 are: 1917, The African Queen, American Sniper, The Call of the Wild(The only one I haven't seen), Gone With The Wind, Hidden Figures, Mary Poppins, My Fair Lady, Secretariat, The Ten Commandments, Titanic, Unbroken, and War Horse. Of the 13 I listed, I would give 5 of them a 10- African Queen, Gone With The Wind, Mary Poppins, My Fair Lady, The Ten Commandments, and Titanic. If you want to know what movies I would consider *perfect*, with no subtitle issue or anything like that, here's 10- in no order: Silence, My Fair Lady, Juno, The Night of the Hunter, Wonder, Stand By Me, Hoop Dreams, City Lights, Spider Man 2, and Babe. While I do look at acting and cinematography and stuff, I mainly look at the emotion. How did it make me feel? 2001: A Space Odyssey is my 3rd favorite movie. I need subtitles for the dialogue, but it's gorgeously shot and I feel dazed watching it. It is the ultimate film-watching experience. That's why, despite a minor flaw, it's rated so high. Movies are about experience. If it gave a great one, it's a 10, regardless if it's "perfect" or not. The moment it's good and not great, it's a 9. That is how I rate movies.
Spinal Tap ... Hey man, it goes to 11.
Psycho, parasite, shawshank redemption and whiplash are the 10/10 movies I've seen
The mere mention of Yogahosers made me almost spit out my drink.
I think Wall-E and Birdman is almost flawless.
I would say The Lion King, Jurassic Park, and Paddington are movies I would call 10/10.
What was the movie with anthony quinn?
"mhm, I know some of these words."
For me Shawshank redemption or Galaxy Quest. Empire had mistakes but I can look past them.
One of my favorite is "Heat" not the one with the chick's either I mean the one with Bank Robbers! Den Of Thieves is almost a modern take on that film! When it comes to very well done movies I'd say "The Road" is the best in my eyes!..
Nothing is perfect. Nothing can be a 10.
What could be more subjective than movie rating, its not all that different than saying which type of movie is best is it comedy, darma, historic, thriller, scifi, horror, or mind bender. Or what foods best, is it fruit, vegtables meat or alcohol. Its all very subjective. My top movies tend to be the ones that effected me on a very personal level, ones i would think about for days and rewatch repeatedly over years to relive the experience. Im generally not focused on the lighting, wardrobe, or soundtract, but they undoubtedly effect the overall experience. Every person will use a different filter to evaluate the end product. Im abit suprized there are even awards for porn, i have yet to see one with great diologue or great story line unless you count 9 and a half weeks as porn.
I can't beleive you love both Empire Strikes Back and Come And See.... You are a very complex man.
Straight outta Compton is a 10/10 for me
Inception is a 10/10, without a doubt.
Anchor man 2 is a 10/10 comedy movie
I go the Roger Evert way. Out of 4
It seems to me a pretty relevant question to ask whether a movie can be fundamentally flawed, yet still better than a more airtight less ambitious movie.
Truman show is tough idk if it’s a 10/10 butttt the theme being conveyed and the gut feeling of wanting jim Carrey to find the truth is so amazing
Nausicaä from the valley of the wind Got better after the first view. Few movies do that.
I rate resevoir dogs a 9 out of 10 and when I asked others they had either never seen the film or rates it around a 4-6 out of 10.
Fellowship of the ring 10/10
10:10 This is my look at it. (And at 10:10- what do you know.)
Only seen one 10/10 movie "nightmare before Christmas" but hope to find more movies I can say that I think its a 10/10
