I love this video. I got a chance to go back to Juba last year for the first time in 10 years and my experience was similar. I relate to the surrealness of it all. One thing I was unexpectedly touched by was being surrounded by the presence of people who look just like me. Did you notice that as well? And I agree, witnessing the wealth disparity in real life was unsettling. It definitely stirred something in me as well.

yess, i think this was the best part - the fact that everyone around me looked just like me and there was a level of freedom bc of that. thank you for watching :)

Beautiful video! I'm Liberian and by the grace of God I was able to visit Liberia again after 23 years in July of 2023. Your video inspires me to share my trip experience, I truly believe that God is bringing the younger diaspora of Africans back to the motherland as a testimony of His goodness, for His glory and honor and for us to give back to our people with the resources that God has blessed us with. I pray that as we get older we can visit the motherland often to help our people and advance the Kingdom of God

the way i LOVE this video so much??😭 like every aspect of it makes me miss village life in nigeria. i was fortunate enough to have been born there/live there for 5ish years, but also travel home every Christmas afterwards. but because of c*vid i haven’t been back since 2019-2020 but the relatability between our village life is OFF the charts, from the : - goat (my grandpa had a goat pen & i turned them into my pets, b4 they were made to be food😭) - using a stick to get fruits from the tree - THE FLIES?? - the roads (doesn’t help when the car is hella crammed 😭) - not knowing the full language - prayer into the new years i can’t wait to go back this year, but its a shame that both of our governments are letting down our countries 🇳🇬❤️🇸🇸

Thank you for this beautiful video Achan. However, I would like to address something you said while visiting your family's village. As someone who is also 1st generation, I try to make it a point to highlight wealth disparities and injustices in my country without dismissing how our indigenous communities have already been living for thousands of years. Western lifestyles are not more advanced or modern just because they have constant electricity, over-established buildings, cars, urban cities, etc. Yes, your family is living like that in 2024, but what exactly is wrong with that? They have a tight-knit community, are in touch with nature and animals, and eat unprocessed & organic foods. The government may have this made-up value system of money, but that money is gained through corruption and violence. This corruption is by no mistake is backed by Western governments who want to keep the Global South destabilized to steal resources from our rich and biodiverse lands. That's not to say they don't face hardships such as drought that may cause food shortages, other environmental disasters, and harmful patriarchal structures. But again, a lot of these issues are, at the root, caused by Western sabotage. I beg us all to be more careful about the way we talk about our own cultures because it feeds into this false narrative that Western lifestyles are what we should aspire to when that could not be further from the truth. Westerners constantly complain about the ills of social media, loneliness, individualism, processed foods, human rights violations, war, violence, overconsumption, and pollution. These same people will then turn around and call our people uncivilized backwards savages for simply living their lives as humans have already been for thousands of years. Simple living does not automatically equate to poverty or a lack of modernity. Nor does Western excess and overconsumption equate to success and advancement. Please don't take this as a personal attack, I'm just tired of how casually we perpetuate these negative ideas about our beautiful rich cultures.

Hello Achan, I ran into your YT vlogs at random. By pure accident, if such a thing exists! It's heart-warming that you (instinctively) refer to yourself as Sudanese, then qualifying it as South Sudanese! You have done it more than once, and in other videos, too! You did not edit them bits out, nor bothered with a retake to have it fixed. That means a lot. In fact one can say it's only a reflection on the obvious: the bigger Sudan is still in your blood as WE ALL, Northerners and Southerns feel deep down ourselves. Incidentally, you profile says you are a curator. I am curious; are you working in a museum? And what did you major in at uni? Regards, stay well sis and keep the good work Mazin Sakharov (Maaz Abdalla)

I am surprised you had no Wifi at the Radisson. It is one of the best hotels in the country - and my friend who lived there for a couple of months did not have that problem. I am glad you had the experience of the village - and your parents must have been very happy to introduce you to your relatives. South Sudanese people are very friendly. One more thing - it is usually white people who are referred to as 'kowajas'.
