What light I use for comic book whitening, how I discovered it, and why I think it works so well.

This video goes into detail on the origins of using 450-460 nm Blue-LED light for the purpose of comic book stain removal and whitening. It also attempts to address as clearly as possible the misconception that Blue LED (450-460 nm) is UV light (defined as wavelengths between 100 nm and 400 nm). There is also a simple explanation on why these lights work so well.

I see what you did there. ;) Thanks for clearing this all up. I've seen a couple hit pieces about you lately (From other talented pressers I respect.), and I have to say you handled this with class and dignity. No name calling, infants crying sound FX or going on about how haters gonna hate for an hour. No. You stuck to the facts and WHY proper recognition is important. You sir are the real comic book scientist. 🙏

I have seen a lot of things in my 50 years of collecting. I do not recall any of them having such a positive impact on the hobby. I very much enjoy your presentation of the facts and the due diligence you put forth in your videos. It is refreshing compared to a lot of the garbage being tossed around on social media these days. The morons regurgitating lies and half truths , motivated by likes, subscriptions and greed, totally corrupting the next generation of collectors and destroying so many great stories. Bah enough negativity. You keep being the best version of yourself and I will keep watching.

Also , I did not see any air holes in that box? Did I not see you drill holes in a previous box? and since I am literally sitting here pulling the backing off of the the tin foil tape with thumbs the size of big toes * the struggle is real* I believe this is as good a time as any, to ask

@@Arak_Zantara I did not drill holes in mine. The book suggests doing so to regulate humidity in the tank. That design also uses the box lid. Since I have rails and an open top, I regulate humidity through the open top and don’t need side holes. If you are gonna use the plastic lid the. You want holes

I saw a set of flat blue led lights they stated they were 465mn range, is that enough over to not be effective at all for whitening books? And great video really informative

Whats your thoughts on LED lights that can change colors, and then using specifically the BLUE light option? It does fall in the nm spectrum but maybe doesn't have the same intensity... might work gently??

You can try. If it’s blue wavelength it should work. Often yes those are weaker ntensity

So what happens with the CGC census when you crack, clean and whiten an already graded comic? If you have a slab of 4.0 and census shows 5 at that grade and you get 6.0 and now the census for that grade is updated the census doesn't know to update 4.0 to 4.

Census does not know - so the census is always high because people grade a book multiple times and then never tell CGC. I have a stack of labels that I occasionally return to them cuz I am good about it. I don’t think most people do. But the census is def not accurate

WTF is with all the drama? I had no idea people were whining about the originator of this particular technique to bleach paper. I was experimenting with blue LED's, ozone and h2o2 on toy plastics and brightening the paper they're packaged in with since 2015, but that's neither here nor there, I was still very late to the game. No one today gets to take credit for identifying 430-460nm as the magic wavelength. It's not the bulb, it's the wavelength. Paper conservation labs have been using aqueous light bleaching since the 80's and they've known for decades that UV filters are needed to protect paper and that best stain removal results came from the use of "cool" blue light. I'll bet you can use the early morning sun to the same effect.
