WHAT JUST HAPPENED On High Stakes Poker??

Ойын-сауық

Okay, we need to talk about what just went down on High Stakes Poker. Nik Airball, Matt Berkey, Rob Yong, Jennifer Tilly, Lynn Ji, and Eric Persson sat down for an epic live stream cash game. However, the fans had some strong opinions about the outcome. There was also an incident over at Hustler Casino Live, where Phil Hellmuth blasted off and abruptly left the game. Let's jump into it.

Unfortunately Doug isn’t in that circle… def a world class player but he’s just not in that world. Rob made that very clear if you watched the stream. I think people are missing the point of what high stakes poker is. Doug even mentioned it when he talked about the tables net worth.

That was raw, “real poker” for better and for worse. You’ll get the times people take it seriously like Berkey. You’ll get the times people’s actions get them crucified on Twitter like Nik Airball’s getting Berkey’s chips and making the dealer “collateral damage” with some perceived behavior “unbecoming of a Poker Pro.” You’ll get people shooting the breeze like Jen Tilly. You’ll get people like Lynne and Rob who like to needle, first Berkey, then Doug. (They probably got burned by “Coinflex” and felt it was time to “flex back” onto the “salesman”.). But for all things, it was pure poker, plain and simple without editorial attention. Straight up and without hesitation. Not sure if AJ and Nick could have done live commentary all those hours. But it was good, and it was true. That’s what matters.

IMO alot of the negativity comes from folks comparing the old school to the new school. Back in the day you respected the cast members. Ivey, Negreanu, the Godfather of Poker Texas Dolly, Sammy Farha, The Robinhood of Poker Barry Greenstein, Johnny Fuck'n Chan!! and many many more. These guys were all legends with distinct personalities and character.. Now were dealing with folks that are somewhat unpolished, with little accolades. Some would say rich brats. Also, back in the day, poker was new and exciting and watching someone raise even $5000 of their own money was frick'n amazing. Now weve seen so many six figure pots that weve become desensitized in a way.

To me, I’d argue most high stakes streams would do a minimum or close to that amount of views especially free on youtube. That said twitter is toxic. I really think selling a broken pokergo last year really hurt how big poker could have gotten with how big youtube is and with all the most popular youtubers also playing. I was just happy to see a free stream with good stream quality (no crashing, comments work, able to 2x the speed and watch the live replay). Also I was personally only upset at airball looking at Lynnes mucked aces like he owns the place. Then again what room do I have to be upset at that?

Hi Doug, you don’t want a noise gate (that’s used to filter out low volume noise). What I think you mean is a compressor that will lower volume over a certain volume threshold such that volume variation is minimized.

Audio limiter could do the trick with the audio spikes. Some times it can sound obvious if there is a hard limit, but it can be blended!

If you're the only train wreck on sure you're going to get good numbers, but when Hustler starts to get a better line up I guarantee people will be there and not here, Tilly and Lynn are just scared money, Persson is about to have a heart attack from too many bathroom visits, and people shouldn't be cackling while a 200k pot is going on.

you may not have meant to, but you dragged their audio people HARD. The hypothetical piece of gear you described as a "kind of noise gate where a mic hits a certain threshold etc." is a compressor, literally the most common tool in an audio engineers belt

Two main issues with the stream… you guys repeated jokes and needles a lot. The cash joke and the two patches was non stop, move on. And the volume on some people was too high. So it was hard to listen to the weird cackling plus the commentators and table ended up talking over one another. And Doug, I know you love doing that weird voice when you’re quoting someone or making fun of someone, but you don’t have to do it over and over. You handled rob pretty well though.

The sound volume control is called Dynamic range compression (DRC). Because teh strream has a 3 minute or some lag it can be applied to the stream. It would be nice.

It's an illusion based on numbers. If you have 300k viewers and 10% are rabid haters, then you'd have ~30k people on twitter/reddit bitching and moaning regardless of quality and content. It just feels like people didn't like it because it was advertised well and probably pulled in more than usual viewership. tl;dr More than usual viewership; more than usual criticism.

Yes, the stream was good, BUT it is also true that Lynne's fake laugher made it worse than it could have been. It was very annoying and it persisted for much of the stream. Also, the show got a lot of view because it was the most anticipated poker stream of the year. It had many viewers before it even started. It does mean it was an epic stream.

The problem is that Doug called Berkey a Fraud. And Doug is kind of playing it like he didn't call him A FRAUD!! I don't know of any relationship that has moved past one of the people calling the other a fraud!! That's see you in court type of verbiage, let alone sit at a poker table and talk to one another like friends.

As a former Audio engineer on the show, it’s more up to the director/producer. They tell us to keep to audio up or down. They probably wanted that good banter pumped high. Now as for a compressor (not a noise gate) that should definitely be used for the laughing and yelling. This was awesome to watch and I miss working there so much 😂

Question for Doug or anyone who takes studying seriously... Is there really a point to play GTO poker style rather than people you are going to play on a consistant basis? Like when you mention you should have some "A5, A4, 76" type of 3 bets and 4 bets in a tournament or cash game... Then what is the point to add those in our range if we are only going to be playing a few dozen hands with said player or table. Wouldn't it make more sense to just push the better hands more because we don't really have an image? Hopefully this makes sense...
