What Jim "Pee Wee" Martin Left Behind For Us All | American Artifact Episode 125

Jim "Pee Wee" Martin, a paratrooper of G Company, 506th PIR, was a man who became a legendary member of the WWII veteran community in his later years. Quiet and humble, he made himself accessible to others and maintained an adventurous spirit until his passing. Many of the items that he brought back from the war are now in the collection of The Gettysburg Museum of History and with Jim's passion for education and history, it seems only appropriate that we share it.

Jimmy was a very good friend of mine who I met late in my life, but from that first meeting in Toccoa we began a friendship that lasted until his death. Knowing Jim or Pee Wee as we called him also gave us the honor of meeting other members of the 506th with many of his fellow G Company members li,e Stan Clever, Eugene Spangler, Bob Izumi and many others. These men and their wives were a great gift to this country as were the other men and women who have served in all branches of our Armed Forces. My God Bless all of them and grant them the peace they deserve.

At 1:31 into the clip I had to stop the video and ponder the thought of what Jim Martin might have been thinking as he was climbing into the C-47 this time. "Was it worth it all?" Absolutely. Freedom was worth fighting for back then, and even more-so today. RIP Jim, and thank you!

It's great to see those items and know they will be able to be seen by so many more people, so pleased the son donated them - a brilliant gesture. Pee Wee is one of those veterans I'd really loved to have met, but at least have watched him on many documentaries, interviews etc. He always came over as utterly authentic, humble, sharply intelligent and a thoroughly decent (understatement) guy displaying the best qualities of that generation and then some.

He always enjoyed the time he spent with you and was impressed with the Gettysburg Museum of History. He commented to me more than once about the quality and variety of displays and the careful attention to detail evident in each of them. It’s not a stretch to say that “The History Underground” was Jim’s favorite KZread channel. We would frequently watch several together when I visited or when we were traveling.

I live in the same town in Ohio as Mr. Martin. He would occasionally give lectures which were especially interesting for those interested in history. He gave honest opinions and answers about what people thought and felt at that time. It definitely wasn't a watered down version of what he saw and did (hated Monty). It's on KZread, but his story tagging along on a WW II tour (unbeknownst to the guide) is pretty funny. He was very respectful but he corrected a few points as he had actually been there.

Another wonderful video and story of a WWII veteran that brought me to tears once again! I have such overwhelming empathy for these unsung heroes, regular guys who answered freedoms call without hesitation! We were in Normandy for the D-day 75 in early June 2019 and were at the Dead man’s corner museum and saw C47’s dropping paratroopers in the distance. We also heard that real veterans were jumping that day. I wonder if that was Pee-Wee among those we saw! Thanks so much for your wonderful work keeping the memories alive! I just hope and pray that our future generations know and learn of their patriotism and sacrifice!

He had major anger/sorrow issues & could never talk about his time in the army. He died when I was 13 & I miss him terribly, even now & I'm 65. God bless all of the brave men who fought for us. We must keep their stories and history alive and never forget them and what they did. A lot of people my age don't know, or don't care. And sadly groups want the very thing they fought against.

So much valuable history under one roof and i'd really like to see Eric invest in a structure that had superior fire prevention. Im just so afraid that one day ill come on here and see something horrible has happened to all those irreplaceable objects.
