For sure ur mom or grandma or basically anyone in ur fam that stitches has a sewing kit and search basic stitches here on youtube so that way you'll save money. Or you can just ask someone u know who's stitching to teach you. :)

    Do you think the fashion design program would be good to be in if you hope to be a costume designer? A lot of working costume designers have a bachelors in technical/design theatre but I find that major too broad and fashion design would give me more technical sewing skills. Also it's a plus that FIT is in New York with its big theatre community and some film/tv opportunities. But I'm also worried that a lot of the internships that FIT students have access to are just in the fashion industry and not in theatre/film. Thx!

    Hey! I am 15 and I live in London and I've always wanted to be a fashion designer, however it is only now that I started taking it seriously. My dream is to go to Central Saint Martins or London College of Fashion and major in Fashion Design and I know I need to work on my sketching and fashion illustration skills and I definitely will take the time to learn how to sew! Do you have any advice to teaching yourself how to sketch and draw fashion illustrations? Also advice on learning how to sew? I've noticed that sewing classes are not the cheapest so I will be saving money to get them, so for now I will be studying fashion illustrations, flats, sewing, draping and pattern cuttering all through the use of KZread and online resources. I am kinda scared as I will mainly be doing this by myself so I was hoping for some works of encouragement? Thank you so much for this video, I really appreciate it and your channel as well! Hi! I'm a junior in high school and it has been my dream for years to be a fashion designer. I have experience in fashion sketching, sewing, and patternmaking. I pretty feel familiar with fashion design but there's still so much for me to learn. I am completely torn between Parsons and FIT. Is there any main difference you notice between the fashion design majors in the two schools? Thank you! and loved the video btw! Edit: I would love to know about the internship opportunities provided and how it works! I'm really looking forward to doing internships and making connections and want to know what opportunities FIT provides for that type of stuff. Another question(sorry), does FIT allow students to get internships before senior year? Btw: Biggest dream is Creative Director for Alexander McQueen so does FIT have any connections there? (I know its a stretch job😬)

  • @nataliadedios

    @nataliadedios

    4 жыл бұрын

    hi! 😇 you’re off to a great start. I don’t have tooo much experience on Parsons but I do know the tuition is more expensive. I’ve heard Parsons starts the 1st year with a foundation year- meaning they teach you a little bit of everything, while FIT goes straight into patternmaking + sewing from day 1. I would do some more research on that! There is no advanced placement but FIT has an accelerated design program, so you can complete your associates degree in 1 year instead of 2! For internships - I have a video on that :-) and yes, you can have internships before your senior year. For Alexander McQueen, not sure if FIT has any connections there as it is a London based brand

    I'm not sure if you'll reply to this since this video was posted 2 years ago lol, but I have 2 questions. First, is it worth it to dorm in terms of the social aspect/meeting people? I'm on the fence, because I want to commute, I'm just worried that if I do I won't make friends, but if I dorm I would definitely want a single because I like having my space and alone time. Second, the two majors I'm thinking of are either Fashion Design or FBM .I feel like I would enjoy creating my own pieces more, but I'm not the best at sewing, I'm a beginner and only made a couple things. Do you think this would affect anything if I wanted to go into Fashion Design? Would it make things more difficult?

    hii! my drawings were very bad the first time I started to draw. no one is born knowing how to draw and sew. If it's something you love, keep practicing at it! :) FIT is an art/business school so in the fashion design classes you will be drawing and sewing every day - and when you get a fashion job, you will be drawing on the computer every day! so make sure its something you enjoy doing. the fashion industry is very broad, I would research different types of fashion jobs! for example, you mentioned you enjoy styling. other fashion jobs are: visual merchandiser, trend forecaster, buyer, marketing manager, stylist, sourcing agent, production manager, PR agent, and so much more! on the home page you can find a list of different majors! www.fitnyc.edu/ right now try to network and collaborate with people your age in your area that you live in! for example, if you have a friend that is into photography and another one that likes to model, you can put together a small photoshoot where you style the clothes (so you can build a portfolio). I even have a friend doing facetime photoshoots because of the pandemic lol. another actionable thing you can do right now is to research designers, brands, fabrics, and different types of seam finishes. all of these things are important to know in styling! research on vogue.com and tag-walk.com are great resources to get started with. it's never too late to switch majors - I know people who were in a whole different career in their mid 20's/30's and decided to pursue fashion. hope that helps xx

    FIT helps connect you with an internship your senior year, which could potentially lead to a design job there! after graduation, you have to apply to design jobs on your own. the entry level design job is called Assistant Designer - in this role you will be doing tech packs, flats on adobe illustrator, sketching, trend research/mood boards, and answering tons of emails!! after graduation I had an assistant designer position, I also started my own business as a patternmaker/seamstress (I no longer do that), I currently work as a freelance print designer, and right now I am trying to start my brand and figure it all out lol! right now it's tough with coronavirus- everything is shut down, consumers are spending less on clothing, and so many people in the fashion industry have been laid off :( so we'll see where the fashion industry goes from here!

Two academic officials have been put on leave in the MFA program. I am hoping that FIT is committing to hiring more Black professors in all of the departments.

    hi☺️to answer your question, it has to be your own figure! You can look at another figure for reference while you are drawing but you have to draw your own figure you don’t have to take any specific classes in high school but I do recommend taking an AP art class if you are able to! Drawing is important, you’ll have a lot of fashion art classes at FIT. I also recommend having a high gpa to increase your chances of getting in! I would research FIT entrance portfolio videos on KZread so you can get an idea of what to aim for in terms of drawing and sewing skills. do your best to prepare, and good luck!✨

  • @nataliadedios

    4 жыл бұрын

    you can choose whatever you’d like, just make sure the theme can be easily “translated” into the sketches & fabric choice! this is a simplified example- if your theme is “lemon” then your fabric choice would be a bright yellow. the sketch would have the relate to the lemon somehow (maybe the dress is round and sculptural, like a lemon)🍋 hope that helps!

    @nataliadedios

    3 жыл бұрын

    I really recommend buying the book "the fashion business manual" by fashionary. It's a very in depth guide on starting a brand and entrepreneurship! After designing your collection, the entire production process is something like this: flats and tech packs, order sample fabric and trim, develop the pattern, create prototype, create fit sample, select final samples, take orders and prepare production, pattern grading, pre production sample, bulk production, quality control, packing and shipping! the next steps are marketing, sales techniques, distribution, accounting, managing cash flow, creating invoices, purchase orders, line sheets, knowing the metrics to measure product performance and more! the fashion design major teaches you skills including: flats and tech packs, textile knowledge, pattern making, garment construction, sewing (the prototype and sample), sketching, how to create line sheets, and concept/design research. the coursework is very heavy on sketching, sewing, and sketching on adobe illustrator. In a fashion design job, you will do flats, tech packs, communicating with vendors/factories, PLM, assist with fittings, and must have strong knowledge of garment construction the courses offered for FBM include: fashion business practices, advertising, excel, fashion marketing, merchandising math, data analysis, financial assortment and planning, product development, micro and macroeconomics, fashion inventory management. typically the job rolls for someone with this degree are merchandising, marketing, buying, and production management. both skill sets are essential for starting a fashion business. building a successful brand is a team effort. gravitate towards the major you relate to more and when you build a brand, hire those who have the other skill set

    I would say a “typical college experience” in the US is on a large campus where the whole town is a ‘college town’ because there is not much in that town except for the college, most people live on campus, Greek life and sororities are a big part of the college culture, nightlife is typically at local bar or Greek life related, sports teams and sports events are big. On the other hand, FIT is only on 1 block- a small campus! Most people commute, Greek life and sororities are non existent or very very small, night life is typically at a club, sports teams are not big, and also the makeup of students is majority female! versus a typical college makeup is 50% 50%. Neither is better or worse, just different. hope that helps :)

    I honestly didn’t work while I was in college, I only did internships. however I know plenty of people who had a job + did school at the same time! Since the schedule is half design classes and half liberal arts classes I recommend getting the liberal arts classes done early to free up your schedule. One way to do this is by taking AP classes in high school and getting college credits. another way is to go to community college first to take liberal arts classes + then transfer those credits over!! I know people who have done that and said it really freed up their schedule

    I am now a freshman in a community college as a Fashion design major, and I really want to transfer to FIT a year later, do you have any recommendation or like how many GPA do I do need to get into FIT, or what kind of courses should I take in my CC now? Thanks xoxo

    hi ☺️ my recommendation is to take as many of the gen ed classes as you can (math, science, English etc) so that you can transfer those credits over. this would also free up your schedule when you’re at FIT and you can focus more on the fashion design classes! I would check the course schedule on the FIT website to see which general education classes they offer and that you can take at your cc. don’t forget to call or email FIT and double check if your credits will transfer over. keep your grades as high as possible of course. best of luck!
