What does it take to be a professional landscape photographer? Surely you just need a really expensive camera? Perhaps you've got to be a Photoshop wizard or maybe you just need to know all of the science behind F-stops and optics?
The truth is much simpler. You just need to show up.
Some of the most widely enjoyed images in history were created by inexpert hands and were more the result of opportunity than technical prowess.
Of course, it helps to know what you're doing but even after decades of perfecting the art, there's still no substitute for being in the right place at the right time. This is perhaps the most significant trait of the professional landscape photographer.
In this video I finish showcasing some of my best images of the last 2 years with insightful stories into the experience of capturing the shot as well as technical insights into how I put it all together.
Every adventure comes with its challenges but you'll never win if you don't show up.

The white trees are not likely bleached... what is likely happening is called Silicification. It is where the tree's organic skeletal material (pulp/cellulose) is slowly absorbing calcium and silica through a process called dissolution. Over decades, the wood becomes a mineral. These minerals are white/clear colored making the trees looking white as the wood "pulp" is slowly replaced by minerals. It is similar to Petrification of a tree except the key minerals are calcium and silica.

Awesome when people share their knowledge…….thanks Joe 👍
I mentioned after seeing your first video of your favorite images of 2022 that I had seen many favorites from well known photographers and that none of them came close in comparison to your dramatic images. After seeing your second video of your favorites, you have set the benchmark that all other photographers can compare their images to. Again, well done Gavin! You have worked your backside off to be the best!

That opening sequence with the white church and soft light is stunning! Well done!
So many trezmendous images. Grumpton will be watching this and taking notes.
Already the quote of 2023... "probably needed..." 🤣 Fabulous work Gavin, and excellent naming of the images too,
Wow the Beavercide photo... it's like looking in the mirror and seeing a ghost
Thanks for the two weeks of your best. I learned a lot!
LOVE that first tree shot in the fog.
Happy New Year! Stay safe and healthy!
Happy New Year Gavin and Amanda! These two recap videos were like happy walks down memory lane, recalling the original videos we saw in which you first captured the amazing images. I think my favorite of all is the one with the dead trees in the water, Beavercide, I think you called it. That one is otherworldly because it is so unusual. But all of them are unusually gawgeous.

The bridge of gold is just gold let us hope 23 is good to you thank you.
not only are you one of my favorite photographers, you are my FAVORITE youtuber in the photography realm. Can't wait to see 2023 from your perspective.
Great reminder that getting out there is what truly matters. It's easy to get wrapped up in product releases and buying/selling
I would like to see you do a few more videos on focus stacking. Especially how you plan your shots to stack them later.
Tidal eviction is SMASHING!
Such a joy looking at theese photos. Youre an awesome phototripper.
This was by far, a wonderfully special presentation! I am in awe of your talent and vision! I enjoy your hijinks and much of your silly stuff but this was a completely different level. Pleasantly and surprisingly serious, extraordinarily informative and wonderfully beautiful! Thank you, this touched me deeply!
Looks like you caught awe. Next book will have to be chasing more awe. Absolutely stunning images! I love the way you see the world. Best wishes to you and Amanda! And luck with the money pit!
Your photography is amazing
BOOM !! Part deux delivered for sure !! Great collection of shots !! Looking forward to seeing what 2023 brings !! Happy new year to you and Mrs H
Number 1: The ability to travel to and take images in interesting environments. Seriously, most people who've made it big in photography were financially privileged to be able to do so and thus could afford to travel to places like Iceland, Africa or other unique places that allow them to take amazing images.

Most of these images were shot just a few hours from home. Some of the best images I shot in my life were during a time of financial struggle. I haven't been on a plane or left my country in 3 years. Tell me more.
Thoroughly enjoyed the last two weeks - thanks Gavin.
😍 „Total Eviction”, with a little bit of fantasy, it looks like one of Sir Francis Drakes ships return’s from raiding one of the Spanish galleons.
Stunning! As always.
Emerald Cavern and Skull Canyon - my two favourites. Absolutely photogasmic stunning! Thank you for these superb experiences, Gavin. All the best to Amanda and you for the new year!
Fantastic to see them all together and hear what it took in field and in post to get to this. Have a great 2023.
Beautiful photos! Happy New Year!
Mant thanks for showing this selection. Your work is stunning and I look forward to seeing your 2023 images. Happy New Year to both you and Amanda🎉
Great pair of videos! Thanks!
Wow that first tree and beaver dam is stunning 😍 thank you for sharing
Another set of stunning pictures Gavin. A fond farewell has to be one of my favourites.
Again so many great and inspiring photos! Happy new year, can't wait to see even more!
Great images! I think the bleached trees with that warm reflection is the best shot. Absutelty amazing!
Thank you for these. They’re great!
I'm very happy I found your channel, some of these images are awe inspiring.
Great photos, Gavin. Thanks and happy New Year to you and Amanda.
Thank you for sharing!
Amazing shots!
Fabulous images Gavin! Happy New Year to you and Amanda!
Thanks for all your videos this last year, and some of those shots are so good, especially the one with just the one bird, Hope you both had a good new year, and look forward to whats to come.
Great photos again!! Cant wait for the next book with those.
Both recap vids are great Gavin-thank you! Loving Chasing Awe…keep up the good work.
Incredible images!
Happy New Year Gavin and Amanda! These were really beautiful images and I enjoyed the video a lot. All the best in 2023 to you both.
Lovely stuff. The beaver shot is a gem
Luv these fireside chats (fire in the Bailey’s bottle?) Happy you included my favourite: ‘Eye on the prize’.
Thanks Gavin, loved all the shots and your explanations of how and why. Happy New Year to you and Amanda
Wonderful images!
Thanks for giving your images titles that basically make sense! Some folks label their photos with titles that are too cerebral or are only meaningful to them and I find that distracting. Again, another fun review of your gorgeous work!
The " clutching hand" . You commented on dodging and ended with what looks like a shaft of light. It WORKED. I like around in the back ground, young trees with the trunks having " lighting" on them. I like how seems to add to the photo.
Just wonderful.
YAY! Happy New Year and thanks for sharing! 🎇🎇🎇🎇🎇🎇
EPIC shots! Your videos & photography are the highlight of KZread for me!! Keep 'em coming!
Simply beautiful images !!! group of beavers is called a colony, or sometimes a family. Happy New Year to you both
More brilliant images Gavin. Thanks for doing the part 2. Looking forward to your 2023 videos. All the best, Phil
Once again-these are just stunning images, Gavin. Thank you for creating these two videos and going into the detail of the scene, your thought process, shooting details, etc. So inspirational and helpful
Thanks for making the second video with those gorgeous shots. I like that you flipped back and forth between your shots on the two coasts. Wishing you a wonderful 2023 and many years of exploring Nova Scotia for new places and compositions. Happy new year Amanda and Gavin!
Such great content; thanks for sharing your selves and the great adventures and photos that result. Happy New Year!
Fantastic shots. Been recommending your channel to many of my friends, love your approach, informative and hilarious! Happy new year to you guys.
Great shots. Thanks for sharing. Happy New Year
An excellent haul of photos, both in this and your first video. Looking forward to what you shoot in the New Year!
Its been awesome following you and Amanda for the last couple years, looking forward to what come in the future! happy new year
Fantastic shots, enjoyed all of them, thank you. Here's to a happy and photogasmic new year..
Most enjoyable!
Thank You!!! Always a treasure to see your images. Thanks for sharing.
Very impressive video. Your explanation was like icing on the cake.
Excellent content superbly delivered by you both as always, thank you.
Happy New Year Gavin & Amanda, entertaining (and inspiring) as ever :)
Thanks for the second video. Have watched many of your videos but until today did not realize how important the music is that accompanies the “reveal of the finished shot”. Happy new year to the both of you.
Gavin, These look great. Thanks again for all the effort You and Amanda put into these photos and videos.
More great photo's. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful photos. I have enjoyed your videos. Thanks for sharing. 🌟
A wonderful set of images, a credit to you and Amanda too. Thanks for sharing.
Fantastic stuff, as usual. My favourites are the beaver pond and the last one - most gorgeous!
Great collection!
Another great video. Happy New Year with hopes of fun and prosperity!
Happy New Year to you both, Amanda's comment "probably needed" was brilliant 🤣🤣
Im in love with that beavercide shot, its just so mystic !
Literally burst out laughing! “I like it thick and gooey” and then your face. 😂
Very enjoyable as usual Gav. Happy New Year from the Cotswolds.
Your Beaver shot was the best! I agree. Would love a print of that! The cinematic orange and blue makes it stand out.

Hey Gavin, great video and happy new year!🎉
Happy New Year! Looking forward to watching your adventures in 2023.
Happy new year to you both from York UK. Looking forward to lots more of your humour and awesome photos in 2023.
Beavercide is my fav! just wow!
Happy new year! Looking forward to stalking you this year!
These last two videos have been magnifique! (mag-nif-e-qaa). I've seen all these images before in your various videos but somehow seeing them all together has just made them really jump out at me. Maybe watching your shenanigans has kind of distracted me before. All these shots are drop dead gorgeous.
Awesome works. You make it looks as if it is so easy. But I realize you put much work and time into the art if photography. Thank you
Gavin you are truly a master of your craft! I realize these images are the best of the year but they are really so amazing. You and Amanda are such a great pair and a real inspiration to your fans. Have a fantastic New Year and I hope 2023 brings you everything you desire. Cheers Mate!
Great gavin will look forward to ur new videos and pictures. Happy new year to u and ur wife
I have the sigma 18-35mm 1.8 art lens for apsc and I noticed the same thing with the colors - especially with the greens. I snagged a portrait of a deer (with the wide angle) and it looks like a painting. Full saturation but not overly so. Just gorgeous.
Thanks for the smiles. The hot chocolate looks like the stuff they put on your roof? LOL. I love these images. They are awesome. I've been watching Simon's videos as well. He does fit right in. When Uncle Grumpy comes to visit you need to make sure you invite Simon along. I'm sure Uncle Grumpy can give him some tips, lol. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your videos in 2023. Thanks for sharing!!!

Nice year end recap.
Happy New Year! I wish you two all the best in 2023! Gorgeous photos especially the beaver pond. It reminded me of Abraham Lake photos you took. Stunning!
So many stunning images! It is hard to pick a favorite, but for some reason, Beaverside really stood out to me as the most unique. I am looking forward to what you discover in 2023! Happy New Year Hardcastle Family!
Loved them
Great video photos are absolutely awesome happy new year to you both keep the videos coming I love watching them
The Hand... was my fav of this video with Beaver side a close second! All of them beautiful! Happy New Year Gavin!
Best video I've seen in quite a while, Gavin. Loved the balance between you and Amanda (she has such a delightful laugh and knows how to make REAL hot chocolate). The photography adventures were exciting ( a concession to good taste you didn't mention shrinkage when you were soaking your arse in cold water). You had excellent images with skilled processing and enough explanation of the shot without getting boring. Good job all around and I enjoyed it. Amanda lends a lot of support and color to your photography trips if in no other way than just being there. Very similar to the way my wife supports me on our bird photography trips. She takes a book to read while I'm photographing birds and I love having her there. BTW, we just celebrated our 61st wedding anniversary Christmas day. Looking forward to your next photo adventure with Amanda.
