What It Takes To Be A Dancer For The Golden State Warriors

Спорт

Every summer, hundreds of jazz and hip-hop dancers audition for one of 21 coveted spots on the ultra-talented all-female dance division of the Golden State Warriors. Known for their energetic in-game performances, the Warriors Dancers are the most recognizable women on the court. Showing us what it’s really like to be a Warriors Dancer is 5-year veteran and team captain Hannie, who knows all about what goes in to the role. Like her fellow dancers, she juggles her day job with late-night rehearsals, community appearances, costume fittings, physical therapy, hair and makeup sessions, and memorizing almost 40 dance routines per season. Though it appears glamorous, the job is an enormous commitment and a labor of love, set against the backdrop of sweeping, sport-wide changes to increase inclusivity and diversity. Today’s Warriors Dance Team, previously known as the “Warriors Girls”, have done away with swimsuit calendars and pom-poms in favor of greater representation from all genders and ages. Find out what it’s like to be Hannie, how she got here, and what it's been like for her during the unexpected end of the 2019-2020 basketball season.

The amount of comments that are reducing these women to basically hookers or strippers is really disgusting... dance is a sport, these women are part-time athletes balancing that with another full-time job. They deserve real respect for what they do. Even though you might not notice them, and they’re not the focal point of the game, doesn’t mean they don’t have value

they are not cheerleaders as she says. That is why they got rid of the palm palms. They are "dancers". I have seen the dancers at the warriors games. They are good. I never knew how much they practiced and what it takes to become one. Typically the dancers come out mostly during half time and time outs. That is when I tend to go get more food or drinks.

As someone who dedicated 16 years to training in cheerleading, I am immensely appreciative of their goal to rebrand as dancers. While I have always had a ton of respect for professional "cheerleaders," what they do is not cheerleading at all. It is technical, difficult, impressive dance. Once my college cheer career ended, it was pretty frustrating to not be able to continue to be a cheerleader, because at the pro level, one needs a dance background, not a cheer background, to be a "cheerleader." Acknowledging that these incredibly talented athletes are truly dancers and not cheerleaders definitely eases that frustration.

What I find crazy about the dance world is that you almost have to be overqualified. Not in this group per day, but I find that at least on the youth level, it’s nearly impossible to make a team/performance unless you can do elements that are way harder than the performance entails. I guess it’s just to make sure that everyone is super clean tho!

This isn't the case. A lot of girls on the teams are weak links, many get hired on with no formal dance experience. It's a popularity contest first-impression audition. Once you make it past round one you know you have to be just likable enough to get past round two, and if you pass through to finals you know that all you have to do is nail charisma in the interview. It's a very arbitrary and very easy process, part of the reason why to me both the teams I made and the team I didnt make don't feel very special; I was probably the weak link on my first two teams and weak links got chosen over me at the final audition I embarked on. It's literally whether they like you based off of the impression you make in a very short amount of time.

Sad? It's what they are really passion about. Plus at least they are each doing some productive with their life. Just like if you had some type of passion which we all do. Say you had a passion for playing an instrument or singing. You would do it a ton of times and even try to make a career out of it if you loved it that much. You would take it seriously because you wan to be the best and you love doing what you do. I also want to point out they seem to love what they are doing which is a major plus. How many people have you encountered that just hate their dob or better yet just dislike it but do it anyways because ''it's a job''? I have many friends like that. In fact I have one friend that has been a fire fighter for many many many many years now. That friend of mine work place has just sucked in recent year or 2. Certain people are getting promoted when they shouldn't be or certain people kissing ass. It's just all being political too. My friend is ready to retire soon and get out...that is how bad it has become. See I then ask myself well why not just get out of a job if you dislike it that much? I guess it's easier said then done. I always say...do what you love to do. Do what makes you happy.

More black and brown females please! The team and cheerleaders should reflect some commonalities! I don't see that here. Disappointing 🤔🤔

If i'm going to a basketball game, I only want to see the game. This "1 minute dance" for "entertainment" seems pretty futile. If you're going to dedicate 6 hours or basically the entire day to dancing, you might as well be putting all that effort into somewhere else imo
