What it's REALLY like to live in ARIZONA (one year later)

I made my cross-country move one whole year ago. Living in Phoenix, Arizona for a year has been a wonderful experience. These are some of the unique and weird things I've noticed during that time. Hope you enjoy :)

I agree with Lisa. I've been in Phoenix since 1977 and you really did cover things very well. But I'd add one more PRO to living here: hardly any flying bugs. I came here from NY and gosh almighty there were so many biting flies, etc. Not here. Hardly a thing. I can leave my doors open for 6 months and be fine.

I agree, I lived in Arizona from 1970 until 2010 where I made the mistake of moving to Washington state. It is a beautiful state but, the people are not beautiful, and the weather is even worse! I am moving back to AZ the first of the year 2021! Whoo Hoo!!! Back Home FOREVER!!!!!

@@pingman2 that's funny I know of too many people who have moved from Arizona to Washington state, myself included, and moved back. One of my neighbors in WA even has a house in AZ for the summer. What is it with these two states? Is it because their opposites in almost all ways it just draws people to and from. Lol anyway hope you make it back okay.

I too,, but left in 73 for service and only visited. Didn't really notice until I went back for vacation circa 05. I was highly disappointed by all the urbanization and modern tourista climate. So any of my thoughts of moving back pretty much ended then. Strangely as I toured with various agencies saving myself and wife some driving and visiting what had become an extremely over commercialized Tombstone and visiting some business's in my old stomp I didn't find anyone who had actually been born and raised there like you and I. I felt odd being lectured on the History and Genera of AZ by someone who only left some other back east state a year or so before. LOL I thought I missed it for a long time but turns out I didn't.

Thinking they are taking care of their pet but nit realizing their dogs are getting heat exhaustion, heat stroke and burning the pads in their poor feet! Not to mention some people with horses don't even have legitimate shade for their animals!! People take their dogs hiking and don't bring enough water for their pets or themselves. IT'S A DESERT PEOPLE!!! HELLLLLLOOOOOO!!! Animals overheat quicker than people do! They have fur coats!! I lived in Minnesota for 8 years and I've lived in Arizona for the past 48 years. I've been back to Minnesota for 1 funeral and a family reunion. The main reason why I will never go back to live in Minnesota is the snow. I remember my back pain all winter long from shoveling snow, and I remember difficult it is to drive in snow. The only snow here is in northern Arizona. The only problem living here is that your house becomes a winter retreat for any and all relatives, and for all levels of relatives.

I visited AZ for the first time in March 2020. My first time to the southwest. I'm an east coast boy. I was so enamored with the landscape. It was like being on another planet. We stayed in Phoenix, but traveled up to Sedona, out to Biosphere II, then to the Grand Canyon. The landscape changed so much traveling to each destination. We saw flat, orange dessert with 20ft tall cacti everywhere. Rocky mountains with a 20 degree temp drop (thankfully we were prepared) covered in pine trees and snow. Flat grassy plains that extended for miles. Forest in the dessert with a river running through it. The landscape was so beautiful and diverse. I'd definitely love to visit AZ again sometime.

I would have been crushed because It was my first vacation in like 10yrs.

palebeachbum It certainly was. We already had patients and weren’t letting visitors in the hospital I work at during that time. We were slow to close things but we definitely had cases. That’s one thing about AZ, we can be slow to catch on to things. We were on the top three worst states by May/June I think. Or maybe that was the beginning of when it really got bad. We were starting to go down but schools opened and ASU reported something in the 400’s of cases just recently. I think they just opened too.

Welcome to the Valley of the Sun! I'm also from the Midwest (mostly Chicago and burbs). I moved here over eight years and love it! You arrived when the weather started to get pretty hot. You'll love the coming lower temperatures and winter is fantastic. You'll even need warm clothes during the winter nights. As for the summer temps don't be too intimidated by the triple digits. A lot of it is psychological. Humidity in the single digits and teens really make summers doable whereas 90 degree heat and 90% humidity in the Midwest is instantly oppressive. Anyway, make sure you take time to go on road trips and explore our beautiful state! All the best!

LA also has one of the highest populations too so the number is relative. I’ve seen way more homeless down in Tucson than in Phoenix. Although someone did tell me that up in Phoenix/Scottsdale the police will pick up homeless people and bring them to shelters.

Plus you just seem like a generally bright personality, so you were pleasant to listen to. Side Note: The people you expected to meet due to it being a red state, are almost a legend at this point. Do those type of people exist, sure, but they seem rare to come across. There is very little of the US population that is actually racists these days. Republicans, in general, tend to be quite chill and want everyone to live their best life. Best bet is to just assume everyone has the best of intentions, until they give you a reason to think otherwise, no matter their political affiliation, race, religion, or whatever else. Just a good way to live life.

Thank you for such a great review! I've lived here most of my life, originally from Colorado. Couple things, we have a lot of cultural diversity outside of Scottsdale, it seems to me that you must live in Scottsdale or northern Phoenix area. So that area is mostly people from out of state and white people. Go anywhere else and you'll find a little bit of everything. My neighborhood is very diverse. Also you forgot to mention how close we are to Mexico and the beach there is much closer than the beaches of California. Also quick thing that often reminds me that most Midwestern and Eastern Americans think Mexican food is "Spanish" food .... Mexico and Spain are two separate continents with different foods and culture. Tiny little pet peeve of mine. Also, I live in the East valley (about a 20 minute drive to sky harbor), I recently bought about 7 months ago, a 1/3 of an acre and 4 bed 2 bath 2100 SQ foot home for $350k, yes with a garage and pool. So I'm paying per month for my home what you pay in rent... If that's any reference to housing.... I love AZ. I lived all over the United States for work, but always come back home to beautiful sunny AZ. There's nothing better, we have it all! 💙

2599MJ I live in central Phoenix and it’s very diverse where I live. I definitely agree about the difference between Mexican and Spanish cuisine. I’ve always lived here and when family visits they can’t wait to have AZ Mexican food. They say it’s not the same anywhere else. I spent most of my vacations growing up in Mexico instead of California because it was cheaper and less crowded. Although, I’ve heard that’s changed.

Great video! Very thorough! I've been in AZ almost 4 years and I love almost everything about it! I also don't miss the humidity of the Midwest!!!

The ideal life is to spend your winter months in southern AZ and your summer months north in Colorado.

Aaahhhhhh yes, Az is amazing... we have 3 months of terrific Heat.... But the rest of the year the weather is Beautiful, so we can deal with the 3 months... I was raised in Mesa Az... I wouldn’t live anywhere else...☀️🌞☀️🌞☀️🌞☀️🌞☀️

This actually has to be one of the best descriptions I have heard! I'm going to be posting this on my wall! I lived for a couple of years in Southern Nevada and swore that when I had the chance I'd be moving to Arizona. I've had to be North a bit for family, but that has come to a close so I'm refocusing! (And oh my gosh that heat thing? People do not realize it's DRY heat! It actually does make a difference. And yes, I felt like I was on vacation every single day of my life even though I had to go to work!)
