What it's like to CHARTER a BENETEAU 48 in the Mediterranean [EP 150]

Last episode we had an unexpected message from a friend inviting us for a week of sailing in Amalfi coast.
We jumped at the chance… then jumped on the plane a few days later!
We travelled for three days on cheap flights and finally arrived in Naples, where we proceeded to get thoroughly lost.
Making our way through the more “interesting” tourist destinations, we finally arrived at our Airbnb in the heart of the old town of Naples.
the following day we set off exploring Naples, stumbling across old churches, catacombs and down narrow laneways until it was finally time to head to the boat, a 48ft Beneteau.
We left before sunset to our first destination of the trip, Procida.
The next day we set off to Sorrento and we examined the boat more closely with Adam doing a walkthrough.

    Adam and Khiara, 🙏 It's amazing that in back to back episodes you have covered two of my favorite places in the world. Places where I have walked the same streets and witnessed the same sights only my time was decades ago. It's nice to see that some things haven't changed much and others have. Glad to see that Neptune still guards the harbor and doesn't appear to have aged much. Many a day trip was loosely planned at his feet and many a last beer drank under his gaze before returning to our home in the harbor. Best Wishes from the Northern Gulf of Mexico 💚

Le Herge which is on the bottom of oyster bay after the storm then 20 years ago. I slept on the settee. Bob slept outside and the girls all had the cabins. it was fun. never showed up for the heinekin regatta but had some good times in nevis.

    It could look like we're comparing the two boat brands against each other but I'm glad that you took away from it that they're designed for two different things... so there is no comparison! A sailboat is a sailboat, same as a car is a car but a Nissan Micra (city car) is designed to different things to a Land Rover (4WD off roader) and each excels at their own things.

    I'm really excited to see how you guys feel this boat holds up. I don't harbor (get it!?) ambitions to circumnavigate the globe or taking on harsh conditions, but a year or two island hopping and fair weather sailing feels within reach of my modest sailing abilities. I think this is a more likely aspiration for many but a lot of the informed opinions are divided into two camps - "Blue Water Badass, I'm YOLOing RTW if the boat cant hit an iceberg and survive its rubbish" or "Plastic Fantastic is all you need!" (for a weekend or taken to places it was never designed to go). I'd really, really appreciate your no-nonsense opinion of this boat (and others like it) for something longer than a 5 day charter (months preferably) but less than transoceanic passages. I guess what I'm asking for specifically, what do you think are the realistic limits of a boat like this?

  • @JCrook1028

    @JCrook1028

    They're going on the boat for a short cruise and you're asking for an in depth opinion of it's worthiness as a long term vessel? Think for just a minute about what you're asking and then realize there is no way they could honestly do that.

  • @SailingMillennialFalcon

    @SailingMillennialFalcon

    2 жыл бұрын

    I think @JC1028 hit the nail on the head. unless we sell our own boat to live for months on this boat then we're not going to know the in depth knowledge of what it's like to live on a boat like this. What I hope comes across in the vid is that (in my opinion) boats are designed for specific purposes. THIS Beneteau was designed for the charter business (sailing no more than 1-2 weeks away from the charter company and then back again). For what it sound like you want to do with the boat (island hopping and fair weather sailing), this fits the design purpose of a Beneteau and should be suitable to what you want to do with it. As for maintenance and longevity, whilst I don't think its as solidly built as some other boats (understandable considering the price of one), if you look after it like any other, it'll stand up to whatever challenges you put it through. Hope this helps!

    @@SailingMillennialFalcon Thanks for the answer, it actually helps quite a bit. When you're awash in opinions and information, sometimes hearing it from the right source helps crystallise some understanding. I think you guys sell yourselves a little short, the experience and knowledge you have give you a whole different lense to view these things through compared to someone like me who only has lake and a little off shore sailing experience. I've never spent weeks or months on ANY boat, there are things I'd never anticipate and problems I fore see that probably aren't real, your opinion even if not based on actual hands on experience has value to someone like me. Especially as you guys are just a lot more straight talking than a lot of sources on the internet (or my local marina for that matter!)

    What a nice video. Sweet. Now you visited Naples (Greek: Nea Polis - new city) you'll have noticed how harbors along the coast are along all sorts of historic places. While the Greek did not originate from near the sea, once they inhabited today's Greece and started to sail the world they quickly developed all sorts of deep insights. The Romans, also did not originate from coastal regions, missed a few things, like sea currents and sedimentation. So harbor places founded by the Greek have their harbors stay naturally open. Rome's old harbor "Ostia" (called Ostia Antica today) is now several kilometers from the coast line.

    What year Beneteau was it?? I follow Expedition Evens YT channel who have a 2008 Beneteau 49' they repaired and now sail... I ask as theirs does not have that big arch just ahead of the helm. Wondering if it's a function model year or length... or a charter edition versus private owner. Never mind... the Evan's boat is a "Sea Pass 49'" model and the charter was a Oceanis 48 of model year xxxx... so the model is the difference.

    No, we didn't think we'd have enough time to stop into Madeira and if we go we want to do the place justice and explore for a few weeks. On the next time around we'll go there as we've heard great things about the place!

    The mark of a gracious statesman is the ability to insult someone such that they thank you for the compliment. Ditto a boat.

    Haha, I know. We can't compare the two and it's a shame that these opportunities happened back to back so it looks like we're comparing the two. They're both build for different purposes on different budgets. It didn't help that the wind was a bit crap so we didn't get the fun parts of sailing the Benny like we did with the Kraken.
