So glad I found a Healthcare Data Analyst youtuber! Most of the creators I follow make Data Analyst videos from a more broad perspective. Nowadays you can't just be a general "data analyst", you need some sort of specialization. Trying to leverage my clinical background and transition into healthcare analytics, these videos are very insightful into the industry. Thanks again Josh!

Glad you liked it, and that you're considering healthcare! I have a tutorial on Pareto charts that might be helpful which explores top causes of death by country. This might be useful for portfolio building. Also, if you're attempting to get into healthcare, I would highly recommend googling IHI open school; it's a free series of lessons that teaches about problems in health care, and how to improve patient safety. It's a great, and quick way to build up some knowledge about the industry. It also has some good analytics gems in it as well.

Yes, it can be tricky. I find that the best places to find open positions that do not initially require epic certification tend to be large hospital systems. Typically, they have lots of funding to sponsor new hires in their training.

Sure! I have a couple of videos on my channel (in case you haven't seen these yet) about becoming a data analyst, so I'd encourage you to start there if you haven't already. For starters, I'd say focus on building your hard skills first. Try learning Excel, SQL, and Tableau in that order. There's lots of free data online you can practice with, like Kaggle.com. for SQL, you can learn that really quickly via a website called SQLZoo Also, if you have the opportunity through your current work, see if it's possible to get involved in a mentorship program with a data analyst to learn more. You could also volunteer for projects involving working with excel spreadsheets or creating graphs; then list those on your resume. If you can work with the tools I mentioned, and you have experience on the job, then you might already qualify to be a data analyst in the Healthcare field, especially given that you are already in the industry and know about things like CPT codes and ICD10 codes. One last thing I would recommend is googling IHI open school. They have some free video lessons and a certification program you can take to build even more industry knowledge. I hope that's helpful! I'll probably do more analytics videos in the future that are more healthcare focused.

Hi thank you so much for this, it’s very informative and I learned quite a lot of what you touched on regarding healthcare quality and databases (much less) in my Health Information Management degree. It's stressful when you're first starting out, because you're new, eager to prove yourself, and it feels like the stakes are higher than they really are. But that adrenaline rush wears off after several months or so once you learn the ins and outs of the job, and adapt to the routine of data requests. For me personally, starting out in my first job, it was scary because I was the only data analyst in my department, and had to learn things pretty quickly. Then I got used to it, and my stress level dropped. It dropped even more when I leveraged that position after 2 years to get a higher paying job with a team of 4 data analysts. For the best experience when you start out, I would recommend applying to a large healthcare organization with lots of data analytics team members. They can mentor you, or help you when you get stuck

Specifically, how do data analyst salaries in the healthcare industry compare to other industries? No worries! For clinical analytics, I recall the us average being 80k vs 70k for general data analysts. However, I couldn't find data that specifically broke down the averages by sub-industry, like biopharma, insurance, government/state health organizations, etc. So I'll be on the lookout for those!

Hey! If you could pls suggest between Healthcare data analyst and MHA which would you say has more growth , salary and is in more demand now days !? TIA.

MHA is more focused on leadership and managent of healthcare service lines (like radiology, cardiology, oncology, etc.), or consulting. The starting pay will be very similar to data analytics. Growth stages are very different. In analytics, you typically go from data analyst to senior, and sometimes lead analyst or principal analyst. You could also get into other fields like data engineering, data science. Could become a manager or director of analytics. Etc. Whereas in MHA, you might start as a service line manager, then a senior manager / director, eventually making your way to administrator or even c-suite (ceo, cmo, cto,etc.). Pay potential is this much higher if you have the right leadership mindset. As far as demand, I think theres going to be a huge demand for data analysts in the coming years. Though Its rough for first timers to get in without some experience and networking. Once you do get that experience, you can get hired pretty quickly. With MHA, its easier to get a job because the degree is at a masters level and the progams tend to set you up with internships, networking connections. Etc. But again, the work is very different than analytics and is more focused on management.

I'm from the UK and would really like to live and work in different countries (including USA), do you know if this job would be easy to satisfy visa requirements or get sponsorship for? Good question! I have definitely met folks who were born and raised in different countries that decided to work in analytics in the US. As far as how difficult it is to get that visa sponsorship, though, am not sure.

Try to network as much as you can. Right now, it's tricky to get a job anywhere as a data analyst. I have found networking to be the most effective way to land a job when the market is rough.

If youre interested in working as a data analyst, in a hospital, one thing you can do is go to a website called IHI. They have free online videos called IHI open school, that will give you some industry knowledge about patient safety. That should be a good start. I'll also be doing more videos on this subject, so stay tuned!

Sounds like you already have a good amount of domain knowledge. So you might just need to brush up on SQL, Excel and a data viz tool like Tableau or PowerBI. Hi Pratikshya, as far as Microsoft products go I think PowerBI is becoming more utilized for data viz over SSRS. But I suppose you could build dashboards in SSRS like Tableau and PowerBI.
