    I can completely agree that I have to give mad respect to Kirk for actually taking this piece of history on the road and playing it live. There are a couple of sides to that, one side says "put it in a museum and preserve it forever". Well then it can't do what it was made to do, make music. The other side of that argument is play that thing just like Peter and Gary did, and that is what Kirk is doing, maybe not to the extent that they did, but just bringing in on the road and not just using it for recording, that says allot about they guy

    That’s the coolest aspect of it. Kirk takes it out on tour it’s being used and loved. As a player you better believe if I had a guitar that cost more than a house I’m going to play it. That’s why I’ll never be rich probably, but if I had a super rare old muscle car, I’d daily drive it also whenever possible. What’s the point in having expensive toys that you never play with ? It ain’t much different than the woman with the fancy “sitting room” with the nice furniture, that no one is allowed to sit in nor does the room ever get used. I understand if you have a family heirloom that has been passed down a couple generations and also happens to be considerably valuable maybe putting it away to pass on down being extra careful with it because of what it represents about your family. I don’t think we can assume value on anything that’s being made today. How do we know what people will want and pay crazy money for in 70 years ?

    I played bassoon in high school and college and spent some time around some committed musicians who had spent a lot of money on an instrument, or were planning on it. A high end Heckle, a German brand and I’m not sure of the spelling, is easily in the tens of thousands. One of my teachers bought a used one for around $40,000 that needed work. The guitar doesn’t have quite the hands on time as a bassoon, but the provenance and exclusivity is there, with regards to this model of LP. I wouldn’t buy it but I still think it’s somewhat reasonably priced, given the circumstances and the market. High end brand name instruments are freaking expensive no matter what kind of instrument, and what’s higher end than a limited run Gibson custom shop?

  • @charlesbolton8471

    @charlesbolton8471

    I completely agree with you. A lot of guitarists have no concept of how expensive other types of instruments can be. As to what is more expensive than a Gibson Custom Shop, there have been several Fender Custom Shop one-offs that actually make these (and original Bursts) look affordable. Martin has also had Custom Shop models in the $50,000 to over $100,000 price range.

    "Perforated so _when_ it breaks..." 🤣 I seem to recall about years ago that Gibson offered an Ace Frehley "Budokan" Les Paul, and there was a "VOS" type option, but also an aged option. I'm pretty sure they said they did in fact break and then repair the headstock. It was in the neighborhood of $14k, and I remember thinking, "Well that's a dumb option!" (Not gonna lie - I bought the Epiphone version that came out at the same time. It _didn't_ have the headstock break. I have number 32, and it's one of my favorite guitars!)

    Question: If you wanted a Gibson Les Paul that sounded exactly like the 50k Greeny but WITHOUT looking like someone dragged it by a chain behind a pickup truck in a gravel parking lot ---, which one should you buy? Maybe a VOS '59 reissue? I'd love one that sounded the same and that I could do my own natural relicing. Serious question! Why is everyone so negative about everything in online guitar communities? Why do so many viewers feel the need to go on a video like this, where someone has been gracious enough to lend their newly purchased guitar that they're so proud of and happy with that they want to share their experience with those that can't afford it, and turn it into a negative situation? Not everything needs to be made for every single person. If you don't like it, you don't have to buy it, why are you telling others whether they should have bought it or that it wasn't worth it? Demand is obviously way more than the number that were made. Let people be happy and enjoy what makes them happy. And anyone that ever says anything such as "specific model guitar X is a real guitar for real musicians, and specific brand Y isn't", you obviously missed the point of playing guitar. There's a reason you seldom hear professionals bashing brands or guitars. Even if something isn't for you, it doesn't mean it's not perfect for someone else, and the thing you think is perfect may be a horrible choice for someone else. No one out there can speak for every player.

    This is the second time they have released the Murphy made Greeny reproduction to the public. Last release was in 2010 and they made 125 guitars. In 2010 they made a reference to Melvin Franks, who was a previous owner of the guitar. This time they released 50 guitars and they added a case that says Green, Moore and Hammett. Absent was Franks, who was a collector.

    As someone who has played two 1959 Gibson Les Paul's and other various Gibson's worth thousands of dollars. I can promise you that guitar isn't even worth 6k. It's sick. It looks great, but there are plenty of Gibsons lying around that will get just as good, if not better than that one, for what you are looking for. Slash's number one Les Paul wasn't even a Gibson, and two main live Les Paul's were 2nds from the Gibson factory. Keep it in perspective. ;-) Outside of all of that. That guitar is sick and looks great. Would love to hear it.

    I think I actually have to agree with Gibson's decision to make these available exclusively through their own store. The numbers are extremely limited and they really tried to sell this as a whole experience and refused to sell to those who they knew would immediately flip them for a profit, of course that's bound to happen in some cases but at least more of them ended up with people that actually wanted one versus someone that wanted to flip one. It would have been difficult to do this by giving them to retailers. Each retailer would have been given a single guitar in most cases and even though there are plenty of fantastic retailers out there, how many of them do you think would have been sold to friends or even employees of the shop? I have a feeling if these were given to dealers we would be seeing a much bigger proportion already up for resale at a much higher price. There are so many examples of limited items in this industry that are all scooped up immediately just for a profit by people that have no interest in keeping them. Then the people that do actually want the item have to pay more. It happens with everything from pedals to guitars.
