What It's Like Being a Woman in Tech

Much of my experience in tech was tinted by the fact that I usually was the only woman on my team, both at my internship and when I worked full-time. So, in this video, I will depict some of those challenges and reflect on those experiences. Have you experienced or observed similar things in your workplace?

Great video! I love your confidence and ability to explain things so clearly. I assume many people would go for “oh another woman whining waa waa waa” without giving the video even a watch, but they really should watch it. I like how you present the things as they are, your experiences. You’re not shouting patriarchy or claiming every woman or every man this and that like some. This is what you experienced, many more so also, and you give good ideas on how to handle things. That shows more maturity than so many. I would wager I wouldn’t be as confident as you and I’ve been around the industry for a long time. So I’ll be subscribing, watching your other videos and waiting for more sensible, calm, super-insightful content from you in the future!

I am college right now, and for the first few months I wore girly clothes and makeup. Then I realized I wasn't treated fairly or if I worked in a team, my voice wasn't always heard. I got frustrated and started to dress like the 'tech bro' . And I also remembered when I worked in a team (I was the only girl in my team and I was also black). None of the guys did any of the work, so I decided to do everything. I sent the work to the team , so that they can read through. The next time we met, The guys changed everything I did and said it wasn't good enough. This actually made reconsider why I decided to go down the tech path but I didn't give up(I Love Tech❤). Nevertheless I am starting to grow confident in my work and letting my voice get heard no matter what. If you're a girl or a guy, don't make someone actions make you want to run away from your dreams.

I relate to this so much! I laughed out loud when you said that maybe the problem was that you never talked to boys -- I went to Barnard and have the same problems at lunch 😅 I've been a SWE in big tech for about a year now and frequently question if people are critical of my work because of my identity, or the quality of the work itself - the struggle is real. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and helping me feel less alone in the industry! 💕

A couple thoughts: -I think you're right to be concerned with your attire. I think a lot of guys and girls in the tech world could benefit greatly by dressing more professionally. I can't justify peoples clothing prejudices but I know they're there and if I care about my upward mobility I need to play along. -Is lunch paid for at your organization? I work in tech and my lunch is unpaid. Therefore my attitude is that its my time to talk about whatever I like with whomever I like. If my boss came to me and was like "hey, could you try including some of the more lonely people into your lunch group?" I'd start eating alone. -Don't "stand up" to criticism, its a bad look. If you feel a criticism is mean-spirited just ignore it. If you know the person couldn't do any better, then ask them how they'd solve the given problem. They'll look dumb when they fail to answer.

The field is not dominated because men want it that way. It's completely opposite. Women are less represented in CS because fewer of them choose to study CS. Fewer of them choose such degree after high-school. It's so simple. Everyone gets hired and paid based on how good they are. They are just less woman in this field by their choice. Just go to a good university, study hard and you will do great.

Someone on reddit made this comment (NOT MINE, but I do agree) Please if you want to credit them go to R/programming and look for the video post. "I enjoyed the perspective of this video, but I don't agree that she faced these issues because she is a "woman in tech". Some of the issues are unique to being female, but none seem to be unique to being "in tech". 1. Difficulty deciding wardrobe. This is something all women face, unfortunately. The pressure to wear the exact right thing without being judged is something women face all the time, unless of course there are work uniforms. Not unique to being an engineer, though. 2. Getting her job position wrong. This happens all the time with all kinds of new people in the workplace. This isn't unique to women or to engineering. Sometimes a new hire isn't introduced or announced, and there's speculation about what role the new person has taken. You shouldn't take it personally if they don't guess correctly. 3. The need to find your niche. No matter who you are, if you're really good at one specific thing, you'll find it easier to excel than if you're just passable at a lot of things. This goes for many different careers and any gender. 4. Ok, this one really irritated me. Not every male engineer is into video games, D&D, basketball, and "gains" at the gym. There are also lots of women who like video games, D&D, basketball, and "gains" at the gym. Regardless of your gender or career, you can easily find yourself in a workplace with little in common with your coworkers. Her only valid point is that being an introvert makes this more challenging, which has nothing to do with being a female engineer. She makes a valid point that if you don't feel included in the conversation, because you don't have any interest in the topic, it's on you to bring up a topic that you can be more involved with. It's absurd to suggest that they should explain D&D to everyone so that no one feels left out. Not fitting in socially isn't a "woman in tech" thing. 5. Unconscious bias is definitely an issue, but it's not unique to being female - her own example is about race, not gender. And it's definitely not unique to the tech industry. I agree that women can be faced with obstacles in a tech career at some companies, but I don't feel like it's the pervasive issue throughout the industry that it was years ago. As for this video, I don't agree that any of these issues are unique to being a "woman in tech". She made a valid point about an issue all women face in a lot of workplaces, not just engineering (1). A couple points don't really have anything to do with being in tech (2, 3, & 5). Point 5 is something that women can face, but it's not unique to them. Point 4 was just ridiculous. So, yes, a woman in tech could face these issues, but a guy in publishing could easily face 4 of the 5 issues here. (5 of 5 if we count #4, which I don't.) Really, point 4 should have been left off. I don't even know that I would have bothered with a comment at all if point 4 hadn't have been so asinine."

I disagree. 1. She explicitly said why choosing her wardrobe wasn't difficult before when she had other female co workers but now since she's the "only" female in her work group, its a concern since whatever she wears will be open to judgement. 2. Getting her role wasn't the point. The point was that her male co-workers automatically assumed that she would be in marketing or design because rigorous things like math/full stack programming is accredited to sth a male would do. It's an unconscious sexist thing. 3. I didn't think she complained about not finding her niche, more like a realization on her part. 4. I understand that not all gamers,d&d enthusiasts are males and assuming that itself is sexist to begin with, but what she said is a real experience that she encountered. I didn't find any generalization on her part which would imply any sexism. 5. Yes, unconscious bias is not unique to females but since she related more to this as a gender bias, she titled the video 'woman in tech' and not 'all biases in tech'
