What is Zener Diode ? Zener Diode as a Voltage Regulator Explained (with solved Examples)

Ғылым және технология

In this video, the basics of Zener Diode is explained and how the Zener Diode can be used as a voltage regulator in the various circuit is explained (with solved examples).
By watching this video, you will learn the following topics:
0:25 What is Zener Diode
5:40 Zener Diode as a Voltage Regulator
9:08 Example 1
12:17 Zener Diode as a Voltage Regulator with variable load
15:25 Example 2
17:25 Zener Diode as a Voltage Regulator with variable source voltage
20:32 Example 3
23:00 Zener Diode as a Voltage Regulator with variable series resistor
25:39 Example 4
What is Zener Diode:
Unlike the normal diode, the Zener diode is intended to use in the reverse bias condition. (Although it can work in both direction)
When the applied reverse bias voltage is more than the breakdown voltage (Known as the Zener voltage), the diode starts conducting in the reverse direction.
And after this Zener voltage, even if the applied voltage is increased, the voltage across the Zener diode almost remains constant. And that's why it is used as a voltage regulator in many applications.
The Zener diodes with a wide range of Zener voltages (2V to 200V, or even higher) are available commercially.
And by changing the doping concentration, it is possible to change the Zener voltage of the Zener diode.
Conditions to operate the Zener diode in the breakdown region (or as a voltage regulator)
1) The reverse bias voltage should be more than the Zener voltage
2) The Zener current should be between knee current (Izk) and the maximum allowable Zener current (Izm)
Zener diode approximations:
1) Zero Zener Resistance (Zener Resistance is negligible)
Under the breakdown region, the Zener diode can be represented as a voltage source in series with the Zener resistance. And typically this resistance used to be a few Ohms)
But for the analysis, the Zener resistance can be neglected.
2) Zener Knee Current is Zero ( Knee Current is negligible)
To operate the Zener diode in the breakdown region, or as a voltage regulator, the current through the Zener diode should be more than the Knee Current.
But for analysis, it can be assumed that this current is negligible.
Zener Diode as a Voltage Regulator:
In this video, the Zener diode voltage regulator circuit is explained (with examples) considering the different cases.
1) The load resistor is Variable (Source and the current limiting series resistor are fixed)
2) The Source/Supply Voltage is Variable (The load resistor and the current limiting series resistor are fixed)
3) The current limiting series resistor is Variable (Source and the load resistors are fixed)
And the example is solved for each case.
This video will be helpful to all the students of science and engineering in understanding, what is Zener diode and how it can be used as a voltage regulator.

At 23:59, the two terms are equated and the equation is simplified for Rs. During this derivation, it has been assumed that the Zener Knee Current is Zero. That means just voltage across the Zener diode should remain at least Vz to operate it in the breakdown region.

Sir can u tell me how zener regulates when source voltage increases

  • @ALLABOUTELECTRONICS

    @ALLABOUTELECTRONICS

    4 жыл бұрын

In case of the Zener diode, in reverse bias, when we increase the voltage beyond Vz (Its Zener Voltage) then it tries to maintains the same voltage across it. But the current through the Zener diode increases. In reality the voltage slightly increases, as we increase the source voltage. And it is also evident from the Zener Curve in the reverse biased condition. But for academic purpose and even in some sort of applications the small increase in the voltage is acceptable and can be assumed as if the voltage across it remains constant. But at the same current through the diode increase. Because of that, the power dissipation across the diode increases. And if it goes beyond the rated value, it can damage the diode. So, when the source voltage increases, then one needs to ensure that the current through the diode is less than the Iz (max), the maximum allowable Zener Current. I hope it will clear your doubt.

I would suggest you to use a voltage regulator instead of the Zener diode. Of course, you can connect, but the practically, the Zener diode won't give you a constant voltage across it. Instead, you can use a regulator like LM 317.

No, as you can see, directly a load is connected after zener. Actually, after the rectification, the filtered output can be connected to zener diode. Considering ideal zener diode, it elemimates the ripple in the filtered output and output voltage across it remains the same. I hope, it will clear your doubt.

Typically the load resistor is the load across which we require a constant voltage. It could be the input of some circuit or input stage of bigger circuit. During the analysis, it can be represented as the input impedance of that circuit. But here for simplicity, it is represented simply as load resistor. I hope it will clear your doubt.

power dissipated by the zener diode is very high and the diode may get destroyed

If Iz is greater than rated maximum, power dissipated as heat will damage the PN junction permanently....

what happen if Vth is less than the zener voltage?

If Vth is less than Zener Voltage, then the Zener Diode will act as an open circuit. And Vo = Vin.

I think Vin would be equal to Vs + VL (where VL = Vo). Vin = Vs + Vo. Please confirm.

    1. What would happen (w.r.t Example 1) if we select RL less than its minimum value. Let's say we connect RL with value of 50 ohm [but RL(min) is 125ohm] , what would happen to Vz/VL? Will it remain 5V or drop? 2. What would happen (w.r.t Example 1) if we use 5v zener diode and put 3v LED as RL in the circuit?? What would now be the voltage across zener diode / load (Vz/VL) ?

Why we cant use the pn junction diode as voltage regulator.... 🤔🤔

I think it's because normal PN junction diodes will get damaged when operated in the breakdown region. Zener diodes are spicial diodes which are designed to operate in their breakdown region. Looking up the two types of breakdowns, i.e. Avalanche breakdown and Zener breakdown may help you grasp a further understanding as to what makes Zener diodes special. Good luck mate.

    How do you find rz?

  • @ALLABOUTELECTRONICS

    @ALLABOUTELECTRONICS

The Zener resistance is given in the datasheet. If it is not given then it can be found from the V/I curve. The slope gives the Zener resistance. If it is difficult to find from the curve, then you can increase the voltage across the Zener diode and can measure the current through it. Ideally the voltage should remain the same. But actually it will increase slightly, with the increase in the applied voltage. The change in Vz with Iz gives the approximate value of zener resistance.

@@ALLABOUTELECTRONICS thanks for the help. I have been having a hard time with using zener diodes to find the ripple voltage. Like if you have a source that varies, what is the ripple on the output voltage and I can't find anything online. Is rz needed?

@@MrMineHeads. hello friend, even if the input voltage is varying, if you use a regulator after a filter, there is little effect on the output.
