What is Wildlife Conservation and Why does it Matter to You? (2024)

Do you want to know what wildlife conservation is? And why it matters to you in 2024?
In this short video I explain what wildlife conservation is and why it matters to you, in simple terms.
Whilst most of the information about conservation and why it's important is factual, some of it will also be somewhat subjective.
This is the first episode of a series called 'Conservation Basics', in which I talk you through some of the key concepts and components of both wildlife biology and wildlife conservation today.
There are many reasons why wildlife conservation is important in this day and age, however in this video I touch on just a few (3 reasons).

Yes, living in an island where marine animals is the source of life will make us more productive and will have a sustainable ecosystem.

Timestamp 1:15, "...or, at least, not everyone grows up knowing that they're surrounded by wildlife..." That is an insightful point.

One small change I'd make to the definition for anyone watching - conservation isn't just about protecting endangered species, but about the common ones too. If you overlook the common ones you risk loosing them, like we did with the Passenger Pigeon.

Hi Alex. Great to see someone making videos breaking down the subject. Personally, I feel if there was a greater understanding of the emergence of conservation legislation, there would be a reduced tendency to use the language of "threat" and "doom". It is not altogether helpful. In Europe, to consider the human impact is a requirement of planning legislation, that is to say, 'land-use'. EIA, or Environmental Impact Assessment is one of a number of existing safeguards available for use. Suggesting human impact is a 'fait-accompli' is dis-engaging and leads to 'positional bargaining' in negotiation. In this respect, I prefer the North America 'Nature Connection' movement. It seeks to engage people in a genuine love for the environment, first.Conservation of the natural and cultural environment matters to us all.

Hi James, thanks for your comment - an interesting point of view! That Nature Connection movement sounds like a good initiative, there are many similar things going on here in the UK. Like those run by Wild Ideas - who I volunteer for! 😀

I think you nailed it on the head with people growing up not knowing they're actually surrounded by nature! There is so much out there, including the "common" species and the less charismatic ones, but nonetheless they are so important. Thanks Alex for raising awareness 💚

Excellent ethos, well explained. Your reference in the comments here to including "common" species too is key too. As per my comment on FB, do pay careful attention to audio levels & quality in future videos, but may there be many more of them! Keep up the good work Alex. You have a new subscriber! 👍😎👍

Living in Ph is really hard to live as a zero waste person. As an advocate I see in this video that waste generation on land has also large impact to marine biodiversity.

Really good video Alex and well explained. Music could be a tad quieter, that’s not a criticism by the way just an observation. Great work and very good presenting, LB Loxley.👍🏼👍🏼
