What a God-awful failure THIS was in our school system. Substituting religious, home, cultural, and societal values with government-dictated social engineering led to the COMPLETE downfall of the education system here in California. These kids don't NEED us telling them what to believe or think - they need us to teach them HOW to formulate ideas and apply them as real-life skills.

But it is what I'M saying. He's using different words, but trust me, the outcome will be the same. @@paksta

@kelaarin I understand why you might be cynical and I'm sorry if things have come to that where you are. Where I live, values like self-discipline, integrity or courage are kept very distinct from political positions. We would expect schools (and most community organisations) to be places where these values are shown and encouraged.

And there's your mistake; I DO appreciate those values, but the HOME is where those values are supposed to be taught and learned. It is NOT the job of the schools, the teachers, or the government to teach or enforce them - because once you establish the government classroom as the source of values, then they can be changed, altered, or discarded based on the whims of political change, often in defiance of parental instruction. And you might cling to the excuse of "well, the parents aren't doing it, so someone has to," but that's the opposite of what happened; the parents never ceded their role as the arbiters of values in a child's life, the schools SEIZED it by teaching different values, not because the parents were slacking. There are hundreds of school board meetings on KZread demonstrating what happens when government-dictated "values" go off the rails and parents object. We've SEEN the results already - it doesn't work. Go to any inner-city area and see for yourself. @@paksta

@@kelaarin I never said that excuse. You're right - a parent passes on values whether they wish to or not. The undisciplined parent communicates a lack of discipline, and so on. A teacher spends enough time with children that they also communicate values to them, whether they wish to or not. A lazy, uncaring teacher communicates as such, regardless of whether it is explicitly discussed. Similarly, a school that does not consciously consider whether prospective staff have integrity, self-respect, self-discipline, are hard-working and care for pupils during the hiring process, will be hit-and-miss at best and impact students poorly, regardless of whether hirees can plan a good maths lesson.
