    I agree german don"t have to be afraid to say they love to be german because of history, I think we all know around the world (at least in Europe) that it's ridiculous to blame them for that reason! Mais d'un point de vue de la fierté je pense que les personnes affirmant qu'elles ne peuvent être fières que par le biais de leur propres efforts ont raison, c'est une manière de penser tout à fait cohérente.

    I somehow love their attitude when they say it's not "proud", but "glad" as German. It sounds very modest and philosophical. Actually, the proud doesn't really help a thing when it comes to a country's development, but only get people inflated... Now a bunch of countries still have this matter -- like Russia -- on the one hand people can't forget their yesterday's glory; on the other the nation's economy still can't find a way to rivive. The gladness and love of living on a beautiful land is sufficient for the people there to strive for a better life. If all the nations only pursue and embrace people's gladness and happiness, but not some intangible pride, the world will just has no war or meaningless disagreements.

    Germany is a beautiful country, and the Germans are wonderful people. I personally know Germans in person. The first time I met them, I had the same stereotypes and worries as everyone else biased or ignorant about them, but they turned out to be very wonderful people and I enjoy their company. The Germans weren't the only ones to blame about the past. Everyone had a hand on it. The deeds of the few does not make it true for all. Germans you are a bustling country, leading fiercely on the world stage. Let go of the past, not only for Germans but for everyone else as well. Stand up and be proud! Mold the present for a better future! This generation has a great chance to make a difference, and we should make it count.

    As the wise woman said in the video, why would you be proud to be of any ethnicity or citizen of any country? That is not your achievement, it was simply a random fact that you were born German, American, Italian, Greek, Japanese etc... be proud about what you've done in your life, not because you were born into certain religion, family or country.

    I think its very sad that so many German people are not proud to be German. It is a beautiful country and they have much to be proud of - at least their economy in times such as these, if nothing else. I am Irish and despite the mess of my country, I'm proud to be Irish - particularly the more I travel. I think we should leave Hitler and the war where it belongs - in the past. It is absurd to still fixate on it especially under these circumstances. I meet German people every day and think they are a wonderful people. Fantastic videos, very helpful.

Of course Germany is beautiful country with brilliant philosophers, artists, poets and authors and kind people but not enough to be proud and you know why? If anyone is German, American, French that because of a simple accident. Millions of sperms rushed to an egg. Sounds as I'm proud of myself because my dad is a wonderful doctor. I cannot find a job because of my dad's job. But if I could be better than him is something different. We could be from any nations with other colors, languages or sex. But if anyone is trying to make the country become as a better country (Not above!) can proud to his/her humanity and amenabilities.

    It is quite surprising to hear that some germans are not proud of being germans and also that some germans don't like their country. There are problems everywhere in the world, but I can't see any reason why someone wouldn't be proud of being german. I mean, if you had high crime rates, poor healthcare, high rates of unemployment, no access to clean water, I would understand, but I honestly think that those people who say they're not proud, they should visit an underdeveloped country and see how tough life can really be and many reasons to not be proud of being born in certain places.

    By the way, "being proud" means something different in German as in English. "Stolz sein" means to be happy of/for reaching a goal/aim / something you have done or have archived. Being born in Germany isn't an achievement. It was given to you by you parents/destiny/god/... I'm a German and would say that I'm proud of Germany but not of living here. Ich bin glücklich hier zu leben. ("I'm happy/lucky to live here") There is a difference in thinking and language.

    Wtf can someone tell me why they were hesitant to say they were proud to be german? Its ok to be proud of ur nation, one dictator doesn't define a nation, but its not just that, that woman said tht she didn't accomplish germany herself, wtfff, i am proud of my nation coz im born here and i love to live here period, Germans think differently.

  • @MinecraftMick

    I'm German and I am proud of Germany... but however I'm not proud to live here, because I only live here because I was born here... and Germans are only proud of achievements... and to be born here isn't an achivement, because I didn't need to do anything to beeing born here.... It's just a cultural difference. In German culture, you are proud if you achieve your aims/goals... And an aim/ a goal is something you have to work for. So a typical German would say, " Ich bin glücklich in Deutschland zu leben" --> I'm happy to live in Germany" My English is terrible... Why has English language only one conjunction initiating a causal clause ("because")? In German we have at least 4 of those words...

  • @CryptoChanakya

    @CryptoChanakya

    Pochi Wow thank you sir, that is indeed a cultural difference. I mean yeah i am motivated by doing something good for my nation and would like to make myself proud in the eyes of my fellow citizens, but heck, u know... my nation is like my mother, I could live a simple but productive and worthy life and she is proud of me, she accepts me however i come, she loves me unconditionally. I guess thats why we are not as efficient as the Germans are, we are proud to just exist as part of the land! I guess its the complexities that that mind deals with here that makes it unique and different, and is what we associate with our motherland of which we are proud. I'm Indian btw.. Yeah, the English language translation and slight misunderstanding makes sense. I'm proud because i live in Germany sounds a bit different than I'm proud to live in germany, maybe thats the nuance i'm missing. :)

    It is so strange that they are not proud of their nation. We can see pictures about what Germany looked like in ruins at the end of WWII (summer, 1945). And now it is better than ever! For contrast, you can see what happened to former African colonies that were left by colonisers in the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's as operating countries in a good shape. Almost all of them have become worse or much worse since then! German products are also pretty good, even those that were made in the former DDR (so much despised nowadays), especially heat-resistant glassware of Jena. Almost all households in Central Europe still have the pale yellow, Mickey Mouse-looking Jena glasses. They are also good for microwave and safe in diswashers, never mind that these were not even invented when such glassware was produced! So it was designed and made so well that it meets requirements that were unheard of at the time when engineers designed such glassware in Jena, decades ago! Perhaps these people are just socialised to be too shy to say they are proud.

    To be proud only of your own accomplishments and not of whatever collective group of people you belong to, is indeed a very rational way of thinking. Nationalism and collective pride tend be indeed very idiotic, yet it bothers me that the few Germans that still feel this way, as absurd or as foolish as it may be, are very unfairly condemned and even labeled as a na... Yes, that four letter designation that shows up in 98% of all discussions related to Germany. On the other hand, the rest of the world is rife with extreme levels of imbecilic nationalism and collectivism... People feeling superior over others because of the accomplishments of certain members of the same "race" or "nationality". And yet it is completely condoned and no one gives a fuck. What a pity.

    most people here give the right answer. im also glad to live in germany, but why proud? i havent contributed anything to the germany that it is today. im not proud of the government that rules us, im not proud of them selling weapons to shady 3rd world oppressing dictators. people can be proud of what they achieved in life, but why proud of a nation? you could be born in any spot of this earth, thats sheer destiny, so the right saying really would be "im glad i live in.../not glad i live in...". this media hyped pride that gets washed into our minds just lives through the success of the german football national team, and theres the same, only those 20 players won the wc, not the entire nation, so you can be proud of these guys, not yourself or germany. national pride just leads to bad things and im not saying that because of the 3rd reich. pride over a nation is for people that cant be proud of themselves, therefor need something to feel a part of.

    ja, das stimmt ja auch. Aber wenn ein Deutscher einfach drauflos sagt: "ich bin stoltz" dann würde es klingen als ob er sagt: ich habe vergessen wie viel unendliche Tragödie im Deutschen Namen passiert ist. und so kommt es zu einem Paradox: die meisten Deutschen können stolz auf Deutschland sein (oder Deutsch zu sein) wenn sie diesen Begriff nicht aussprechen. Zu groß ist die Gefahr missverstanden zu werden.

From all the discussion on the topic of being proud to be a member of a given society I can see more and more clear that it is very much an linguistic problem. We would need to define the notion of: "being proud" first in order to be able to understand what we are talking about. I will check what wikipedia says on it. We should all do. It's a good idea.
