Many years late to the party, but I think one of the aspects that make touhou so incentivizing for creators of fanworks is that most of the game is a relatively simple and clean slate. Music is one thing, but many other aspects allow for a lot of creative liberties. For example due to the official character art generally being found lacking it've sparked a lot of visual creative space for character interpretation by drawing artists. The fact that people usually prefer the fanart variations over the official art also helps funnel the community towards artists who're looking for paid work and with it increasing the amount of fanart available for the franchise. Similarly for people who like to explore, theorize and construct the background of characters in terms of story, Touhou once again offers very mild background elements that uses mythology and character relationships as a hook. This allows the fanbase in a lot of cases to derive from the real life mythology and figure out a rough sketch of what each character is like or how they've lived based on said mythology and how the touhou variation of the mythological character differentiates by observing their character relationships. (Though most characters are watered down versions of the mythological counterpart, to maintain the notion of a fun fairyland. The official manga works show off that they can be quite a bit more sinister from time to time though.) Generally speaking as a concept, I personally prefer to look at Touhou as a toybox with the bare minimum aspects needed to make it's own world, but most of the details are left for interpretation and that's what a lot of it's success has derived from.

Touhou music is so interesting to me. As an outsider looking in, my knowledge of this series ranges only from YTPMV memes (Ex: UN Owen, Marisa stole, Night of nights) I played have Touhou 6 a bit, but still have not seen the spark that makes this community so huge. Either way, its a huge community full of so many creative things, however the size of the franchise is too overwhelming for me explore in depth. All things considered, you've earned a sub.

Just kidding what i really wanted to say is if you're still interested in touhou you should start with touhou 7 or 8 people say they're the easyest but if you're not into bullet hell games you can try the fighting games.There's no need to do them in any order since aside from a few references past events are rarely (if ever) important to the plot.

You also did good job enhancing your content with these great animations too. No problem at all ^^ Yeah I recently kinda switched the type of content I produce, as I really wanted to try out some new stuff. Right now I'm mainly focusing on animated story videos, animated educational videos (like this one), and speedpaints. But I'm still experimenting a bit. But yeah generally people like to have some visual representation when being explained an abstract concept (like Touhou music) ^^ Hence I figured my little animated style would fit nicely with this type of explanation video ^^ Thank you very much and no problem at all, I love educating others about subjects I enjoy and stuff ^^

some iranian dudeZ there is the folklore part of touhou, but I think that is generally surrounding the origin of characters rather than the actual story or content of the game itself. Most obvious in my opinion being Princess Kaguya, a character in a Japanese folktale. Her theme is Flight of the Bamboo Cutter, in regards the bamboo cutter that found her in the original tale. Her spell cards relate to the impossible requests she gave her suitors. However, the story of IN, nor any of the other characters, relate to the tale, besides being from the moon. While there is instances of folklore in touhou, it's generally not "what touhou is". It does add to the depth of the game and certainly could be mentioned, but it's less relevant to understanding the concept~ Although I do guess youkai folklore is quite relevant All in all I guess I'm kind of mixed about this: it isn't required to know but it certainly is nice too -text wall rip :/-

yeah i found some touhou music i liked and listened to it and some others for a few months then im like wait this is from a game? and thats how I started playing touhou

i grew up with Touhou and have completely disconnected from its fanbase and sometimes creep back to it (like this time). however during the times that i listened to its music and played its games, it introduced me to so many great things. I am forever grateful of Touhou :3 it really shaped who i am positively.

I was instantly attracted by Touhou music because of my huge love for electro, house and trance music, i fitted right in

Me too! I’ve been a huge fan of Konami’s BEMANI music series for years, and this music seems to have a lot in common with it. Can’t wait to see what’s out there.

Actually there are 3 reasons: -many songs -many circles -the creator has made it an open IP. Its because of that; that the touhou music, merch, doujins, pretty much the entire franchise is as big as it is. About 18 + a handful of spin off games and mangas that are officially endorsed by ZUN. The rest is all the work of dedicated fans. Everything is, in a sense, the people's franchise. ZUN makes the trains while everyone else lays the train tracks. It's why games with a strong community presence heavily outlive their original creators and OG game runtime. DOOM, GTA, Fallout, TF2, etc. If they're not as eneronous and DMCA trigger happy like Nintendo and EA (they're big because they did their community partaking earlier then 180'd om their fans), then the franchise will be forever kept alive by the fans and the people.

A decent Touhou introduction video that I can easily show my pals. Thank you very much for your hard work. Although to be honest I'm not really into the musi-*gets flooded by the angry mobs* I'm more into the doujinshi stuff, so I kinda down when you didn't mention much about that but still, this is a very high quality video so it's okay. Will eagerly wait for your reviews on the music circles as I'm trying to indulge myself in the music part of the fandom and honestly it is pretty scary with how much there is and where to begin. Thank you ^^ Well, there's quite a handful of other "What is Touhou?" videos out there who touch upon more than just the music aspect of Touhou (such as the doujinshi aspect). As the title suggest, this video mainly focuses on the many music arrangements around Touhou. I simply included the little introduction regarding Touhou, in case people have heard of the term "touhou music" before, but don't know exactly what "touhou" is. Akatsuki records, digital wing, shibayan records and dBu music is my fav and ZUN used one of dBu's remix in their official game (antinomy of common flowers)

"Spider's Blood" had to be my favorite, but "SLASH YOUR MIND" was pretty good too. (Honorable mentions for "Flower in The Floor", "Hoshizara no Cappricio", and "Eliminator")

A reason I want to get into touhou is because of the fricking EUROBEAT tracks in it I listen to various eurobeats and the ones from touhou are godly as well so I want to play that game but I don’t know where to start

Touhou 6 is the one most people start with. It was the first game released on Windows xp and it the most popular.

Bad Apple was a remix of a PC-98 Touhou game called Touhou 4: Lotus Land Story. The song that was remixed was also called Bad Apple!!

Also, those "We'll be right back" moments should be in an anime of their own. Especially the music, it makes it 10 times even more damn hilarious.

EastNewSound's pretty good, and I'm somewhat familiar with them, so seeing them right off the bat was both comforting and gave me a good frame of reference for everything that followed. Yeah, not new to Touhou remixes, but not thoroughly versed in them either, so thanks for filling in the gaps in my knowledge! :) I intend to share this video with anyone who asks me "what's a Touhou remix?". :3

SWING HOLIC YES I've been listening to Touhou music for several years, and it's really nice to see an informational video on the topic like this. I remember being confused by how everything worked for quite a while. It's actually been a while since I actively listened to Touhou music, and this video reinvigorated my interest. I think I shall go and visit some old favourites.

Thank you very much ^^ Hmm.. My fav circle would probably be Halozy. Simply because they cover quite a lot of genres I like. Though I really like DiGiTAL WiNG and A-One as well ^^ In general I'm a pretty big sucker for eurobeat music.

My current favorites at the moment are probably Liz-Triangle for their extremely competent vocal arranges and Floating Cloud Acoustic because I'm a sucker for folk-style music. Have you heard Halozy's Eurobeat remix of Digital Wing's Plazma? Sounds like something right up your alley ;3 (the original seems to have disappeared off youtube unfortunately)

One of the most underrated circles i liked was tamaonsen, if not wrong the only one that makes rap arrangements, relaxing and fun to listen to, for me at least.

Both are nice, and Toby likes Touhou But yeah, Touhou is definitely my top 1 when comes to bgm

Can't wait to see the circle reviews. Personally for me my favourite has to be SOUND HOLIC feat. Nana Takahashi, but that's because her vocals are AMAZING. Even if not Touhou, TIEFSEE shows how great her vocals are.

I know Eliminator is an original track yeah ^^ However it represented ALiCE'S EMOTiON pretty well genre wise, plus I just really like that particular song, hence why I used it ^^ And thank you ^^

I'll rewatch again this video when i'm not drunk. I just discovered your channel and when I was younger I had similar interests to yours even if i'm only 16 now, it's really interesting and it gives me a lot of nostalgia. (Btw in my state it is legale to drink since 16 lol) I have no idea why i'm writing this under a video from 3 years ago lol but I basically grew up whit an english cover of bad apple (it was by lizz i think) and it was also kinda my opening point of the whole vocaloid and jpop community that I listen to to this day

Oh if you think the touhou remixes is a rabbit hole, you should look up "Touhou Style Originals" or "Touhou AV's" (Alternative Versions) If you're curious, basically Touhou Styled Originals are original songs made to sound like it's from a Touhou game or heavily inspired by ZUN's style of music. Touhou AV's are a really cool concept. It's basically "What if this touhou song was made for this game instead?" or "What if ZUN decided to remaster this OST?" Some Doujin circles I recommend checking out that do these are "Paradise of Boundaries", "Flowers' Second Bloom", and "Consonances and Dissonances" (Although most Touhou styled content is released individually)

Oh boi je suis tellement heureuse de trouver une personne francophone aussi fan de touhou que moi haha. Je connais des personnes qui aiment mais sans plus, du coup c'est super sympa de voir des personnes aborder des sujets sur cet univers si particulier et si chouette!
