Whether a Transfer Portal is good or bad, it is reality. Every single eligible coaching staff better be aggressively attacking that portal or they’ll be left out in the cold. Remember…There is the QUICK and the DEAD in the world of competition.

Can we get a link to Tom Ryan's response when he called in?

Context and Asterisk are the same thing if we are talking about changes in the way things are done. An asterisk or context isn’t a bad thing it just means they won the championship and set a record with slightly different rules in recruiting and in scoring takedowns.

Is there any chance Flo goes back to content with blogs or articles? Or is the new vlog style here to stay?

This logic fails. Cause what about Deag? Nagao? Truax? At arguable better programs. You sound bitter and stupid.

Let's make it more interesting and like doing your income taxes: a kid who stays in your program scores the full points available in the NCAA tournament. A transfer kid is docked a half point or more as he progresses through the tournament and if he transferred as a last year athlete, he's docked even more. That'd make your program even more interesting, Christian, because when you and your guys were discussing the forecast just before the NCAA's, there'd be one more thing to talk about in the mix. Like I said, it'd be like doing your taxes. Maybe invite an accountant on the show.

Transfer portal is great for athletes, terrible for small programs. Athletes get paid, or they get to go somewhere that fits them better. But I think this era of being proud to be in a certain program is over. It's turning into a business which I don't think is a bad thing. It's going to be tough for programs to adjust to though, it's huge shift in how things are done.

Most of U M transfers are graduate transfers or 5yr seniors a degree from U M is worth a lot of pull

The asterisk does not connote anything untoward. It symbolizes whatever footnote the user of the asterisk wants it to, e.g.: *since the advent of 3pt take down era beginning 2024. When creating tables and the like, it's not always space-efficient to write out that text. So when some pundit comments that there should be an asterisk, they're merely saying additional mention should be made, such as "shot clock era". [on edit: no more internet for coach ]

So I 100% agree with you. And on a factual level you are completely correct; however, I will say that often when people use the expression they do mean it in a negative sense; implying that something was undeserved, doesn't count, or was unfairly done. I'm interested to hear more and see what exactly he meant by it.

Simply not a good look for Tom. He did it before it was the norm, so there is that, otherwise he needs to focus on his own house. BTW PSU would have won if you take all 4 transfers out. Tom if your 10 man organic squad can't beat a 6 man PSU squad, something you are doing isn't working.

Can’t get transfers and don’t get transfers are two different things. Perhaps some transfers don’t find that they will benefit from certain programs.

There needs to be a cap for how many starters transferred in in the past 2 years

If it is so easy to rack up points at nationals, why were 2nd, 3rd… place point totals so low??

I don’t give a shit 💩 about who gets what in transfers. Just wrestle

Yet tommy Ryan has said he is sticking with the team he recruited, BUT in reality, Ryan DOES have kids on his team from the portal.. Haters will be haters and they are jealous of the recent domination of PSU.

Also consider that Michigan is a world-renowned university. A graduate degree from UMich means something in the professional world. If I had the opportunity to wrestle at a top-notch program and get a graduate degree that opens big doors, it would be tempting!

I love Pyles as a broadcaster or especially when he’s off the cuff on FLR being himself, but it’s a huge flop imo every time he does one of these when he’s acting as the all ruling voice of power of the entire wrestling fanbase collective, and taken as fact with the same validity we’d give to a Woj Bomb breaking news inside story but instead of breaking news it’s an op-ed. All while he also has to be busy protecting their business relationships instead of being completely impartial and 100% derived from research data and vetted sourced material. Especially in an era where the athletes should be able to speak for themselves on so many platforms before ever needing media to even report on conjecture. Edit: CP is the man I’m simply just giving my initial genuine feelings in order to provide feedback to improve as a huge fan.

Think about this. COACH TOM transferred from Syracuse in College to Iowa….must have been a reason….Native to NY, Tom must have thought the gra$$ was greener in Iowa to make that move for 2 years. I find it hypocritical that Tom would think any kid can’t enter the portal and transfer. CLEARLY, Tom has his panties in a wad over Cardenas and missing out on Mesenbrink. I mean, how viable are you as a program if you lose by a hundred plus at the NCAA’s? I’ve spoken to Tom AT LENGTH via email, and I think Tom is a good dude and does it what he thinks is the right way, but Tom wants things Tom’s way, and will quickly throw someone/another team under the bus for overachieving at what Tom at the moments deems unworthy. For Tom to think there should be an Asterik for the team points title, is sour grapes….would he have thought that if OSU or a current Iowa team had accomplished that. I’d bet not. What is he going to think if Penn State re-breaks that record back to back years. I feel in Tom’s case there is animosity toward Cael and Penn State in general. When Penn State went to OSU and Nickal pinned then number 2 Moore, and Penn State hammered them in that dual, I feel Tom got embarrassed. Tom should worry about developing wrestlers, and stop rushing the mat and whining about calls he feels goes against OSU. Start penalizing coaches for mat violations.

Christian pretending there isn't a right way and a wrong way

As a Clemson grad and long time tigers football fan, I can tell you from experience. As one of the two top teams in Americas for 8-10 years, you see what’s happened to Clemson since Dabo didn’t believe in transfer portal. Clemson was the best school in the land at developing talent and competing against Bama’s 5 stars with a bunch of 3 stars. But the times have changed. We’ve continued to be successful but when injuries pile up, you must be able to fill those holes. Sure we’ve had top 10 teams with 10+win seasons, but you have to adapt. Clemson just started using the portal this year and they are way behind the game on this stuff. And I believe Dabo is only using the portal because he was going to lose his job if he didn’t. Do I agree with the transfer portal and the ease of which athletes can switch teams? Absolutely not, but it’s in the rules and you if you’re not taking advantage of the portal, you’re not doing as good as you could be. Shout out to NC State but it’s a matter of time and like CP said, that’s not throwing shade on anyone. 🙏🏼

1997 Iowa scored 174 pts with this point system however 1983 Iowa scored 177.5 with this point system. In 1996, they doubled the bonus scoring (ex pin went from 1 to 2 so on and so forth). •Then in 2001, the placement points charged from 16-12-9-7-5-3-2-1 to 16-12-10-9-7-6-4-3 Here is another issue and even though it’s a clear disadvantage for 1983 Hawkeyes, it still prevents the points in past to simply be adjusted. Back then they did a follow the leader in consis. If you lost first or second round and the guy you lost to didn’t make the semis, you were eliminated. Kasak and Nagoa thus year with that system would not have scored a single team point. Kasak scored 19 team pts by the way. Again, even though that is the 3rd disadvantage of the 1983 team, it still makes if difficult to adjust because it’s really not the same. If you do however just make the adjustments to the bonus pts and the placement pts…83 Iowa has 177.5. It’s also worth nothing that in that calculation, there was no adjustments made for the follow the leader consi’s. So no hypotheticals outside the 83 Hawks just having their bonus pts placement pts count the same as Penn States did. I brought this up the entire year and did so because I had a feeling that State was going to break that 1997 mark of 170 but in doing so not get up to 178. I figured if I just brought it up afterwards people just lose their minds. That didn’t matter anyway because even though I talked about it all year people lost their minds anyway. but i really couldn’t care less. Either way it’s just facts being stated . facts one teams bonus points were half the amount and their placement points were given lost points for. I’m sure Penn State will score over 180 the next few years anyway

I think that is a good question. If we used today's point system in 1997, I think their overall score is higher. If we took Iowa's 1997 team and had them wrestle in the 2024 NCAA tournament, they would not do as well given the ongoing evolvement in wrestling.

I agree there’s an asterisk with the scoring record. The portal now allows teams to easily plug up any holes on the team, instantly adding huge points where there would have been little to none. 🤷‍♂️
