    I do think a large part of Girl Math is general irony/humor as well as the mentality of “what’s the point of saving for a future that is not guaranteed.” Whenever I pay for anything in cash, that’s not real money because the banks don’t know about that.

    "Boy math" is gamers buying Armoured Core before even finishing Bouldur's Gate, having upgraded their computer to be able to run them at specs they dont understand, still looking ahead to picking up Starfield, and having 200+ games in their Steam library they never installed after buying them in Summer Sales. They'll get through them eventually, it's just an investment. (note, just like girl math and men, boy math is absolutely also done by women)

    Man I have so many games off steam sales. And I realized after clocking a few hours here and there that I just loved the kick of buying a game. I didn't even enjoy games anymore as they felt more like chores or just downgraded versions of their former selves, graphics got better but gameplay got duller and more repetitive. When that hit me I just quit gaming altogether. It's been 3 years now, feels good man.

Like even if a guy loses or goes even (I’m guilty to doing this) we’ll say “well we just had two hours of fun at the blackjack table, so I didn’t even really lose.” Or the other classic “yeah tonight I’m down, but lifetime I’m still basically even” and my absolute favourite, it’s a very niche one “if you’re playing blackjack but not betting on lucky-lucky you’re just loosing out money at that point,“

    Hitrioc, I think one of the aspects of Gen Z "not caring about the long term" comes from, as others have said, an unguaranteed future. I was born in '98 and I remember back in the oughts and early tens when people were still hopeful about helping the planet (shout out Al Gore). I also remember that sentiment largely growing into more of "yeah we are just fucked now." I think a lot of people my age share that sentiment because we are actively seeing the destruction of our future in real time.... so fuck it we ball

    People do this with Steam games all the time. "well if i buy it now, when its on sale, i've saved money" (then they never play the game.... so basically just gave Valve $20). and yes, the US has printed more money than ever in the last 30 years. if you were born in the last 30 years , you have 1,000x more access to "stuff" than someone today. pre-2006, smart phones, PC gaming, a million $10 apps, overpriced food delivery apps, boutique clothing brands, Marvel movies, etc... just didn't exist. wanted to "have fun" as a kid in 1998? you went to the mall and didn't spend anything other than on a slice of pizza and a soda at Sbarro, or road your bike around construction sites and got smacked by your mom when you cut yourself on rebar. maybe you spent $5 at an arcade. you didn't watch and dono to youtubers and twitch streamers. they didn't exist either. there were less concerts that were teen-friendly/teen-available as sure Brittany Spears and NSync were touring, but they didn't tour to the level that happens today. the knob has been turned to 11 on everything, in conjunction with consumer FOMO, people save less, spend more, as that's what been normalized. combine that with inflation being exacerbated by a shitty system... the price of everything will continue to rise. save your money. or invest in doge when it goes to the moon lol

    Dude, I feel like I've had to rewire my brain to not get caught up in hype for every new product. I played the demo for Pikmin 4, really enjoyed it, then thought to myself, "Do I want to pay $60 for this game?" and realized that there is no good reason for me to buy it, especially when I haven't even beaten Persona 4 Golden yet. I've also become more interested in emulators as of late, which has essentially expanded my horizon of "games I can play for free" to an amount so large that even just playing the ones worth playing would take a lifetime. So, in summary, don't fall into a hype trap for Armored Core 6 or whatever and just play We Love Katamari on a PS2 emulator, it's a really great game.

    I mean she has a point about prices. They're really not based on demand, especially for basic goods like bread/flour or toilet paper which have relatively inelastic demand. If they were based on demand, profits wouldn't be rising this much. There is an argument to be made that there's cost inflation from dwindling supply due to things like the pandemic and the war in Ukraine. But this doesn't explain all of the increase in pricing. Companies are just increasing prices because they can blame it all on supply issues and rake in huge profits because people still have to buy these things and regulation is non-existent. There's also the classic inflation loop of prices rising because prices are rising.

Some of the biggest players in the oil/petroleum industry have decided to produce less oil in order to create an artificial “demand” to justify raising their prices. Due to this I feel that girl on TikTok was largely correct in that someone just “decides” the prices of everything. As Attioc said, we are exchanging money for the use of energy to produce something, but if the producers of energy are corrupt then wtf are we paying for??

  • @rookiereekie358

    @rookiereekie358

    I can tell you why. Corporations aren’t stupid. They see that Covid or Ukraine tensions are gonna cause major supply shocks. When the supply shocks catches up to them, they’re gonna lose their (sometimes very thin!) profit margins. So, to avoid this, they raise prices. Essentially, the price of the supply shock has been laden onto the consumer. The reason their profits are so high is because the aforementioned supply shock hasn’t caught up yet. So in that short time, that have great profits, but soon they’ll be brought down to regular baseline by the negatives of the supply shock that’s been catching up to them, and other consequences of inflation. Supply and Demand is still taught for a reason; it works.

If for example I book and pay for a convention badge and hotel in February (budgeting expenses for that then), future me when the trip rolls around months later goes, "oh boy, now I have all this budget available for the trip for food and goods since I don't have any more bills for it!" I think that is mostly because of how close paycheck-to-paycheck many are in society. Similarly, twice a year there are 3 pay periods in a month due to bi-weekly pay. Those feel like an additional tax return season since I try and budget around just the two paychecks every month.

    As someone born in the mid to late 90's the first time money became "real" (i.e. not a couple coins from my parents to buy cards or sweets but something i could save) was right around 2008... In the UK we've had one continuous financial crisis since then due to austerity and Brexit and now rampant inflation. It's very demoralising. I've managed to get myself into the top 15% of earners in the country and I can't afford a house in my county, that would've been unthinkable 40 years ago

    To a point about his "barrels of Oil' comment: just based off rough estimates in 1970 an average house was worth 1360.36 barrels of oil, but in 2023 an average house is worth 6,426.96 barrels of oil. I agree that viewing currency as an exchange of energy is a valid paradigm (i.e. labor for money) but the raw resource argument does not truly hold up especially with non-renewable resources as fiat currency can be continuously generated and oil, gold, emeralds, ect. cannot.

The underlying ideas behind girl math seem to be to not worry about that shit and have a good time now rather than bother to save for when you're old, crusty and the world isnt affording you the luxries that you can buy today; with a thing that is totally conceptual in nature (money) and will evaporate when an apocalypse or world changing event innevitably happens.

    The only time I do weird math is when it comes to paying for things in cash, and normally it’s because I got that money in cash, and so when I pay for something personal in cash, it’s like extra money because I didn’t have to pay taxes on it. I don’t really do weird math on things, but because I run my own business, I do weird justifications for taking a break a lot. Especially starting out, I’ve been taking a lot of breaks because the job is so mentally taxing. I keep wanting to just work in my preferred zen-like state, but I am always losing it because of the constant novelty of the issues I am facing. Hopefully it gets back to becoming more mundane to me again, and I can take less breaks, but that is as weird as I get with it.

    I cant find an actual house price to oil ratio graph (though xkcd 2327 is similar), but I dont think thats true, oil prices fluctuate wildly (since 1973), also because of construction/labor costs and higher building standards an average house now costs more average yearly salarys than it did in the past. (theres also a house price to land price ratio which is pretty interesting). there is a BA thesis from 2019 which finds a relation between oil and house prices, but it contradicts previous academic papers and only looks at ccandinavia between 1990 and 2018 (title: Is there a relationship between oil price and house price inflation?)
