What Is Therapeutic Ultrasound & How Does It Work

Ғылым және технология

This video explains what is going on when a patient goes to a physical therapy office, chiropractic office or Doctor's office and is given an ultrasound/ultrasonic treatment. How does ultrasound work, what is it doing, what are the considerations for using. Bob Johnson of www.medfaxxinc.com explains why depth of penetration, size of ultrasound head or crystal, frequency of treatment whether a continuous ultrasound or pulsed ultrasound is important as it relates to the body part being treated and goals of the treatment. MedFaxx, Inc. rents and sells ultrasound equipment and needs to know what the goals are to determine whether to rent ultrasound unit or purchase one for home use.

Sir Bob tks ur quick reply. I hope to use home type Ultrasound device to use at home. Like to know if the Ultrasound pain treatment would help or make condition worse Because some Hometype device specified that bone tumour patients are Not suited to use. Pleeese help to clarify this. Thanks a million in advance. Heat n blood circulation would definitely help. God bless you Sir. John, Hongkong

Generally with tumours problem is increased blood flow means faster growth which is not good. All sorts of tumors so check with Dr./physician first

Hi John, In essence do you need heat for comfort or blood flow in deeper tissues? US is a form of heat derived internally by moving molecules against each other, creating friction thus heat in tissues.

US piezo crystal, generates heat when current passes in it.! Good design prevents the US head becoming too hot. Otherwise, burns the skin.

hi bob, is there an ultrasound that could penetrate to the pelvic floor muscles and work on a muscle spasm there ? it seems quite deep into the tissue, probably 2-3 inches. i have seen urologists and physical therapists and at this point i am aware of the muscle spasm, i can feel the location. prior to this work it was more of a numbness. the problem is when i go to relax the area to urinate, there is relaxation-then a sharp pain,- the the muscles involuntarily contract - which stops the attempt to urinate. i read some research by lilius and valtonen who were able to release the levator ani after a series of treatments with 1mhz. so what do you think ?

Hello Bob, Is the ultrasound lipo slimming same as this? Regarding the two machines that you showed in this video, will they also do slimming or fat melting(as efficiently as the ultrasound lipo), to the parts where they are applied? Thank you.

+Kketansa Art No it isn't Kketansa. Not the same I don't think. Generally the frequencies used for therapeutic are 3 mghz or 10 mghz if my memory correct. If possible just ask the frequency of the machine being used and you will know. I'm not very knowledgeable on the process of how ultrasound is used in lipo. Sorry couldn't be more helpful.

Bob Johnson Thank you. There are 1mhz and 3mhz in cosmetic as well as therapeutic. I read that 1mhz is a deep penetator. More numbers, its the shallower.

+Kketansa Art you are correct that the higher the number then the less penetration. You are right too it's standard for 1 and 3 mhz. OK knowing that for sure then the therapeutic ultrasound we talk of is same frequency as lipo however then you get into the "ERA" - ( effective radiating area) which is exactly where is the ultrasound coming from over an area. The "head" of the instrument houses the "crystal" which is where the u/s is being emitted from. Often the "head" is much larger than the crystal and is misleading to folks as they think the head is 100% u/s but as video says it may only be 5% of crystal under the head so not much coming out to generate the heat. Hope this helps and thanks for refreshing my "brain freeze" moment on U/S frequencies!! :)

Bob Johnson So I guess if we buy cheaper machines, we get the smaller crystals. Must buy the right one. Not brain freeze, must be because it been 3 years of no videos :). You explain best. You should do more videos. Make vlogs if not equipments :))

What happens if you put an ultrasound directly on the head, brain area?

  • @medfaxx1

+slava tsvetkov very little or maybe nothing. Couple of issues. 1. the sound head will be against many round surfaces so you may have some contact issues as when there is poor contact the machines cut off as a safety measure. 2. You should get heat though if using on continuous due to short area in skin to bone which then reflects and refracts U/S sound waves and crosses those coming from the machine itself. More energy in small area generates more friction therefore more heat. Quick short answer.

slava tsvetkov.. US waves may destory nerves, usually the hearing nerve. It affect badly the ear drum.

actually yes and can google it for those studies. U/S is basically "heat" but deeper with vibrations being the causative generator. Now is ultrasound better than "wet topical" or "diathermy" then I don't know but far safer than diathermy although diathermy goes much deeper. The studies you will find support the benefits of "heat" and not really specific to ultrasound other than you will find some studies on "pulsed" ultrasound claiming benefits but the pulsed use does not generate heat.

I wouldn't buy a used car from this guy. I am a PTA and teach students how to apply ultrasound and his explanation of the process is WAAAAAY oversimplified. I don't know what state he does business in but here in New York, you must be a licensed practitioner to purchase that first machine he showed, you know, the one he sells to patients that can't get back and forth for treatment.

So Vibro56 what is the basis or your comment? What exactly is wrong or incorrect? Be specific. I do business in N.C. primarily times 40+ years and actually over time in all the states and overseas. I guest lecture at graduate P.T. programs as well as many seminars over the decades. I suggest you go back to school and get a PT degree or pay attention better in your classes. Now specifically point out the problem(s) in the video. You spoke up so now back up your comments.
