What is thematic analysis?

A lecture given by Dr Victoria Clarke at the University the West of England, Bristol, UK, in November 2017. The lecture is entitled "Thematic analysis: What is it, when is it useful, and what does 'best practice' look like?" In this hour lecture, Victoria Clarke maps out different approaches to thematic analysis, and different conceptualisations of the 'theme', addresses common misconceptions and confusions about thematic analysis, and highlights the flexibility thematic analysis offers the qualitative researcher. Victoria Clarke is co-author with Virginia Braun of the highly cited paper 'Using Thematic Analysis in Psychology' (2006), and is widely regarded as a leading authority on thematic analysis.

Great response to critics that say a TA is not sophisticated enough for a doctorate. I completely agree with you that the sophistication lies in the researchers skill and not the methodology used.

At 39.05... “So, it’s about the researcher as storyteller. Actively engaged with the data, through the lens of their own cultural membership and social positioning, their theoretical assumptions and ideological commitment. So, it’s not about accuracy, it’s not about reliability.” So, you proport that a good method of scientific research does not need to be accurate or reliable? Rather it is reasonable or even superior for a ‘researcher’ to insert their own cultural and ideological bias into a data set and come to whatever conclusion they feel to be correct based on their bias?

Bloody hell! What an absolute travesty of video design. If you really wanted a split screen, you really should have made the writing the bigger part as that’s the information-element of the video. Other than this is bloody fantastic. Thanks.
