For anyone curious, the original tbh drawing is based off of the character hifumi izanami from hypnosis mic. The manga (specifically the fp vs mtr volumes) features very iconic chibis of the characters, including hifumi. Go look up some panels and you’ll see the resemblance! As a hypmic fan I feel like it’s my duty to bring up this fact because it’s Really funny to see a once obscure fandom meme to a whole phenomenon LMAO

I think a crucial bit of history about this meme is the binding of Isaac mod that inspired a couple other mods using the creature. I think it sat well with the Isaac community because it's head looks similar to the game's protagonist, down to the lowly detailed eyes and the theme of simple child drawings.

Agreed! I have Autism, ADHD, and anxiety, so my brain is just a nauseatingly neon pink room containing this creature (which stands still and makes lil noises), one of those biblical angels with too many eyes (bouncing off walls like a screensaver), and a regular middle school bully (who’s just kind of mean and useless). The room is constantly spinning. Send help. No but fr this creature is a Vibe ™ in an indescribable way. It’s the facial expression, the stance… everything.

as an identity v player, it neither came from it. there is no creature or monster whatsever that looks like that in the game. but, if you wanted to know, the original photo which says "tbh" and is drawn by hand, the tbh creature was done with hair because it was based on a character called "hifumi izanami" from hypnosis microphone.

I'm late but a note on the Tumblr side of this meme: it actually escalated much further than mentioned. I don't remember the people involved, but on one of the posts of fanart of the tbh creature people started adding on their takes of what creations of other acronyms would look like, including but not limited to "ngl", "lol", "lmao", "wtf", and "rofl" from what I remember. It was actually pretty wholesome to see

The fact that it's called "TBH" fits too well, considering many autistic persons including myself are blunt and honest (not entirely bereft of some tact, just a lot more frank than many people are used to) Also Yipee!!

So I'm autistic And I love TBH I didn't knew it was the "macot of autism" until now, but it definitely is.

I had heard my little sister talking about it and referred to it as the yippee dog and so I thought that's what it was called and my gf was scrolling through Ali Express and found a plushie and shirt so we got them for her for Christmas and then after ordering found out it was called the autism creature, had no idea, not sure how our mom would feel about that considering it brother is autistic but thought I would share the story

its expression is relatable for some autistic people, to me at least it looks like “the autism stare” which is literally just. staring with them big ol eyes. Its nothing too deep. I think that the online autistic community adopted the creature as a goofy and positive symbol- with autism acceptance/awareness month in april when it was really taking off, it was kind of just a right place right time situation. Its nice to have a silly little drawing we can call “the autism creature” when we’re so used to being represented by puzzle pieces and stuff. It's awful. As someone with autism, I hate this thing so much. I find it more offensive than the puzzle. It's a weird, creepy, soulless alien creature which is how some people see people with autism. It feels like just another insult about how people with autism have no feelings, no emotions and are not "real people" but different weird beings. I get enough mockery like that at home, I don't need a representation of it as an "icon" for autism.

I like it because it reminds me of my usual stare expression when I feel enthusiasm :) (people around me have learned to measure my mood by the openess of my eyes as a cue to consider) and the archetypical YIPEE sound really resonates with my usual vocal expressions to specific emotions. For what comes to the fanarts I've seen these times, most of what I have seen is pretty relatable as well.
