I have to say that when I first started the video and saw the leather gloves and no scale, I doubted that I'd get much out of it. By the end, I think you body language showed a much better representation of the strength of the knots than any number on a scale could. Also seeing how the knots failed by slipping vs breaking reveals some useful information. And yeah I think I will be switching to that improved uni knot. Thanks for sharing this video

Older video but just saw this. That's awesome! I grew up tying the clinch knot... the Polamar has been my go to lately. But honestly the improved Uni looks easier to tie. Looping your lure through the knot, like you do with the Polamar, is a pain in the ass when you're using bigger baits with multiple treble hooks. That's just my experience with it. Great video. Thank you!

I use the Palomar knot fishing for King Salmon in The Great Lakes area, Ontario, Canada. I use 30lb braid to a snap swivel for quick lure changes, and have never once had the knot fail. The line always breaks, usually from an abrasion above the knot. So I'll stick with the Palomar. But this is a great video, if I need something more heavy duty, I'll definitely try the double Uni. Thanks 👍👍

This is such a good video showing the strength test of the knots. You don’t need a scale. I’m using the palomar and wills see how easy the double uni is to tying different types of line; the Palomar is easy to tie.

Wow! That double uni-knot was impressive!! Gonna have to practice that one! I have always used the improved clinch knot(since the late 1980s), except I go thru the hook eye TWICE, then continue on, always doing 7 twists. And I NEVER trim my tag end right up by the knot, I always leave about a 1/4 inch. Those fish couldn't give a rat's a$$ about that tag end... I also ONLY use PowerPro braid on all my reels, spinning or baitcasting, scaling the pound test up or down depending on the situation. I have landed a 30lb northern pike on that knot.

I ordered this to net the algae in a large pond in our backyard. kzread.infoUgkxphFK7ETiDP5G4IGsNcg7vbASDp_YfDpI The net is very sturdy and easy to maneuver in the water. The angled edges make it easier to get into the smaller spaces among the rocks. I didn't realize that the front of the net doesn't actually have a frame to it, just the sides do, but it seems to work just fine. The handle extends to various sizes, which is a great feature when I'm in areas that are tight with shrubs at the edges of the pond. I can collapse the handle so it doesn't get stuck in the bushes.

Normally I use Palomar knots when I go for freshwater fishing, but I do improved uni knot (iuk) when I go for saltwater. After watching your video, I will change at all to use only iuk...definitively it was the strongest one. On the other hand, the knot I use to tie my FC leader to the braided mainline is the FG knot... From now on, I will use only FG and iuk. I will check out other of your vids...

When tying a clinch knot on small tippet, if you as much as pull on the tag end of the line, you just weakened the knot tremendously. If you even tie the clinch knot and try to cut the tag end of the line with dull nippers, you’ve just weakened the knot and when your line breaks you will have a curly on the end of the line. It’s critical to tie the clinch knot correctly!! Thanks, great content!

The uni knot depends solely on turns to get friction. Not saying doubling the lines won't help, but doubling the amount of turns will probably get you a similar result. My local shops always says 10 turns minimum with any type of braid and 5 with mono. I usually go a few turns beyond that even as tying knots is not my forte. The one exception is if I'm making a paternoster tackle or something similar where I typically use 06-1.0 mm braid. That stuff is so thick that even with tools making a 5 turn knot properly can be a pain and the thickness of the lines means you get plenty of friction per turn anyway so it's not really needed.

The thing is most people use mono or flurocarbon for hook lengths so it's harder to do double knots. This would he good for braid to a swivel which is the most likely time when you would attach braid to something that isn't a leader.

yeah those 3 tags will not be too good on weeds but if they catch any you can rest assured so will the rest of your hook or lure ,perhaps this one is better for deep sea fishing and juts use the uni or the palomar for fresh water

Line through the eye twice on regular uni is also very good for any line. you ain't breaking it with braid. 6 wraps is all you need for braid. I have been finding the number of wraps matters a lot with the double line uni. I went down to 3 or 4 max with 12 to 20# fluoro.

So for 0.38 mm fluorcarbon how many wraps would you recommend? And how does the amount of wraps affect the fluorcarbon ? And overall strength

The only time I've ever had a uni knot slip on me was when I didn't cinch the knot tight enough and cut the tag end too short. It pulled right through.

Clinch knot and improved clinch knot work way better on non braided lines.. just throwing that out there. When using braid if you can always do a Palomar knot.

Great video, but I have to mention that Braided line is known to slip.

Just thinking logically... If the test of the palomar knot broke the line above the knot, and the double uni didn't break... Either there was a weak spot in the line or you got tired! 😁. If all things are equal... 65# braid breaks at 65# of pressure. I definitely liked seeing how the clinch knots performed though. Cool vid.

Not exactly. When he breaks the palomar that bit of line you see hanging off the tag end, not the failure point. It failed right at the choke point of the knot... Basically as he pulled harder, the knot cinched tighter on the main line creating a weak point where the pressure of the cinching basically cut the main line. Seems that the 'improved uni' or whatever you wanna call it can absorb the pressure better as pulling harder on the main line does not cinch down as strongly as it does with the palomar. So yes, the palomar broke at a weak spot on the line but it was one that was created by the structure of the knot acting as a sort of force multiplier on the cinching pressure.

you tied the clinch and improved clinch, but what about the double improved clinch?

would have liked you using a scale or something to meassure the strength. Some other videos show the improved clinch to be very strong. here I get the feeling the imp. uni could be better.

The line failure is the fisherman's fault, not the knot's fault. Knots should be tightened half way and allowed to relax before going full tight. The line can actually get pinched/crushed by itself if not allowed to relax. If the line slips through, it's the knot's fault.

Your arms are giving it a stronger pull than when fishing? clearly you've never gone after blue fin! Jkjk... had to poke fun at ya. this is a good video and it is valuable thank you very much

Great demonstration on knots but what about those nine whitetail I see in the background, that is a real distraction!
