Ive been struggling with open & square stance for ages as ive only been doing archery 8 months. I found both to be painful over repeat rounds until i discovered closed stance today. I thought id discovered a new stance as no one has ever mentioned this before??? What a difference! I shot 10 arrows straight off and no pain and got great results. 9 in the centre..... Unreal 😁
Square stance, as instructed by my coach (I shoot compound rather than recurve). I'm a newcomer to archery in the past 4 months. I find it helps me get "power" into the stance, to which I can centre and root my core over top of that.

Nice!
If I'm shooting a set distance repeatedly, I tend to use the square stance. however if shooting unknown distances that are constantly changing (like in field archery and stump shooting), I naturally tend to use the open stance.
Awesome video as always Ashe! I personally shoot with a slightly 'open' stance - about 15 degrees open to the target. One thing that you didn't mention in the video is that there is also a degree of 'openness' that may be different for each archer. I.e. some may shoot with 15 degrees open, some 30, some maybe even 45 degrees...

Thanks man! That's very true, and a great point, thanks for sharing :)
I've been trying a few different styles over the last few months, and am now in the process of being coached in KSL, and routinely I find a closed stance feels more comfortable and relaxed. I currently shoot open stance with good results, but it feel tense and awkward and I'm considering experimenting again with my stance. Serendipitous you shared this video, because I was just playing with stance and how it feels doing SPT this morning, and was wondering about it. Thanks!

very good video. I like the way to explain and I like the way the English is spoken. So in one time I improve archery techniques and skills in English language comprehension. Thank you!!!

I totally need to shoot open stance or else I won't get "the wedge". My forearms are too short and if I try anything but, I wont be able to anchor and provide back tension, as opposed to when I'm shooting open stance that I find it easy to get to the clicker and get a good shot. Great video!

Thanks :) Sounds like you've got it sorted!
Square stance. I used to shoot open, but I have a tendency to put too much weight on my left (leading) leg, and a broad square stance helps correct that. That said, I have no problem resting my bow on my leg :)

Very helpful, more visuals would add to illustrate the positions discussed. Small point, position is referring to the shape, precision is how accurate you are, diction is everything.
Used square stance when I begin, then switched to open stance. I think I found the stance that allowed me to shoot and minimized leaning back-forward-left-right with my torso.

Ashe. I have a doubt. Considering WA 18 m shot. What is the best reference for the higher position of the bow arm when you draw?
@OnlineArcheryAcademy
4 жыл бұрын
Hey Fernando - try not to worry too much about the exact height. I would focus on doing a motion that feels natural, efficient and allows you to draw the bow in the correct way (whilst also making sure of safety rules obviously). I hope that helps!
Square stance, i just recently did add the clicker, suffering a bit with the expansion but hopefully will get there. For pain in my draw shoulder🤪

@@OnlineArcheryAcademy hey! Hope you are well , after following your advise and video instructions my expansion now is so smooth very controlled and stable aiming with the clicker on!! Thank you for you wonderful videos !!!
Open stance but have been shooting a long time and have changed as I have got older
I shoot slightly open. Lead foot maybe 3-4 inches outside of rear foot.
I use an adaptive stance developed from a hybrid of both. more benefits
Archery GB - in their technical framework are only recommending Square or Open Stances - Closed appears to be rejected out of hand...
recently returned to a more closed stance after a full open...75% closed/25%open. Indoor only.

Used to shoot square stance ever since i started umtil recently whem i switched to open. However, i find the open stance causes my bow arm shoulder to roll over and have a shitty alignment :/
@OnlineArcheryAcademy
4 жыл бұрын
It can be harder to get that bow shoulder alignment as I mentioned in the video, but it's always a trade off with other factors too. It's always good to practice getting the alignment in the mirror with a band and no shirt on, and then you can start to get the feeling of the torso rotation a bit more clearly to help with that alignment.
I prefer the square, but I am current more open due to string clearance.
Okay tomorrow I'm off to the range Thanks, Peace Al Chelnick

I was taught to use square stance. Open stance is for compound shooters, my coach told me.

Open stance isn't just for compound :) There are definitely fewer compounds that use a square stance when compared to recurve archers, but the stances are not exclusive to one discipline.

It is a great starting point, and it works for many people beyond that too!
Started square finding closed to suit me
I found open stance more consistent but that doesn't permit me to do the bow rotation after the shot (as most of Corean do). Is such rotatoin important?
@OnlineArcheryAcademy
3 жыл бұрын
The amount of rotation itself isn't important, it's more important that you don't grip and/or torque the bow. So if you feel a good bow hand release with the open stance but it doesn't do the full rotation this can be fine - an example is some archers release and have the bow tip hit the leg.

Online Archery Academy yes, I answered the question before I watched your full video and my analysis was exactly the same. I have shot well with an open stance but I have more ‘bad shots’ and it’s when I’m lazy with getting to alignment whereas a square stance puts you in the right shape from the start. Far less ‘bad shots’

It was an advise from a coach to improve my posture and make the movements more fluent. After a time of training I reduce a little the amplitude of the open stance to improve the alignment of the shoulders.

There are two/three points on this video that are almost subliminal - appearing for only TWO seconds that actually show the stance you are DESCRIBING WITH YOUR HANDS!!!!. Why on earth do you not have a person there to show the stance AS WELL AS you explaining the pros and cons of each. Very poor presentation - just a talking head.
