A pentatonic scale is a 5 note scale, rather than our more usual 7 note major or minor scales. The pentatonic is very much based on the 7 note major / minor scale, but only uses 5 of the 7 notes to construct it. It therefore shouldn't be too surprising that the pentatonic has a major and minor, just like the full 7 note major and minor scales.
The really cool thing about the 5 note scale vs the 7 note, is that you have no semi-tone notes. All the notes in a pentatonic scale are either a tone or tone and a half apart, and therefore it is quite tricky to find any clashing notes when playing over a basic chord structure. This is one of the reasons why guitarists often gravitate towards this scale when soloing, as every note should sound great all the time!

    newbie here, do you apply the formulas to any note scale and they will make the major and minor pentatonic? or do those formulas only apply to the D scale?

  • @yga

    @yga

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Aaron, you can apply the formula to any major scale to get the pentatonic notes for that key. This means the distances between notes are always the same, which means particular scales always have the same sound/feel. This video is part of a series, but that's not always clear on YT, so if you've missed the first videos in the series it's worth going back and checking them out here club.yourguitaracademy.com/theory-exercises

    Why do most guitar teachers teach scales in keys that are not C or G major? C uses all natural notes and G is a very common campfire key that uses easy open chords.

  • @yga

    @yga

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey Brian, I cannot speak for other guitar tutors but for this lesson we are teaching more the concept of the the scale rather than how to play it on the guitar and using a scale with more sharps allows you too see how regardless of sharps or flats the foundations of the scale remain the same :)

    He gave it to you. he suggested why in the world we have pentatonic scales, since all the notes in them already exist in Major and Minor. And specifically which 2 notes and why shall fall off of Major and Minor and that's already a lot of info. Namely, in the Major scale, the notes that could be mistaken easiest - the notes with half step distance between them - 3rd and 4th and 7th and 8th. And since 8th is also 1st - the root - I could tell you that is the 7th that goes out. For the other note that goes out we have to see the next video. (((-:

    C major has C, D, E, F, G, A, and B. 7 notes. It ends with another C which is an octave higher than the C you started the scale with.

    Octaves are 8 notes but major and minor scales have just 7 different notes and the 8th is the repeated root note an octave higher.

    why is the rest of the lesson not here. this is exactly why most stop trying with theory. people want to get more views and make hundreds of videos. I get that. but I dont want to watch 400 videos. of half a theory. gezzz when will I find a video that combines many theory but will finaly but stuff togeter so that we actualy learn more easely lol no one is doing it the right way.

    Hi Christine, this video is part of a playlist here, kzread.info/head/PLFcgHQh5q7E6IRhVQ1c7h5bXbfSHibsnT which should hopefully give the video more context! We have all of our theory lessons grouped together here club.yourguitaracademy.com/theory-exercises
