I'm sitting here trying to figure out my noise issue where turning up the gain increases the noise and I only JUST realized that that means the noise is coming from the SOURCE, not the interface. -facepalm- Time to check my mic and cables. This is why I watch this channel regularly and come back to even the older videos. Thanks AGAIN, Joe Gilder, for reiterating common sense for me.

As I established with a couple of helpful commenters last time, for those of us with a limited budget it's feasible to end up with a noisy setup, in which case doing your best to nudge up the volume of the performance is helpful. Yep. I had a noise floor issue. Not sure what happened. Preamp turned up and all. I’ve heard Protools is a voodoo system anyhow. It bugs out whenever it wants. Joe... wish I knew who to share this with. I’m the only nerd in my entire family who does this. Thinking about giving it a rest but I realize this recording and creating devil will continue to haunt me until I put out another song. 😀. Great video as usual

Thanks Joe. I think I fall victim of fearing this noise floor to the point of being scared to even try audio recording. Wondering if I just need to not over think the interface / preamp gain and just make sure there is no clip, then after that try using the normalize function. It looks pretty slick. Could you expound a bit on that? In the past I know I have dragged the boxes on a the perimeter of an audio track in S1 so that I could see the waveform and and honestly it seemed like it was inexact process lol maybe this function could be an easy solve for me with the levels and noise floor worries.

Hey Joe, Could you talk a bit more about the electric guitar amp noise bit? I have an Orange TH30, and I notice significant changes in noise switching between 7, 15, and 30 watts, and how to best record with something like that. Thanks!

noise doesn't matter that much. however, aliasing does. speaking from my own experience, once i exported a synth that was too quiet (as it turned out) into a project, it became weird. not noisy at all (probably good resolution and an interface, i think it was 24 bit). but it got chopped up in some places. so guys, there are actually 3 rules: 1. DON'T CLIP WHILE RECORDING. 2. DON'T EXPORT AT TOO LOW VOLUME. 3. DON'T CLIP SINGLE TRACKS WHILE EXPORTING. digital systems handle excessive loudness without any artifacts. if you boost an item by a 100 dB and turn down the track fader, there will be zero difference. even if your faders are clipping by a 100 dB, you can turn it down on a bus or on the receiving track. you don't have to be stupid of course, but try experimenting with this. digital audio is pristine clean. however, if you're pushing extremely loud track into an "analog" plugin, the plugin will clip and sound like shizzles. recommended volume for input into analog plugins is 0 VU RMS, but you can (and probably should) push a little harder on sparse tracks as they have more peak loudness than RMS loudness. i usually add 2 volume plugins before and after desired plugin to hit it in the sweetspot. so, that was a long post, but don't be afraid to clip on a track level. but if you're exporting stems, DON'T clip at track level, however, you can clip at the master bus, because it's not a stereo track but a bunch of stems. hope that cleared out some questions, thanks for reading.

Noise floor, is when you have a load of kids, and yes it matters, wrecks the wood, love the vids

I use an SM58 and a Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 to record. The SM58 is a relatively low output mic so I often had to crank my pre-amp on my interface. This made my recordings noticably noisy. What I ended up doing is getting an inline preamp that accepts phantom power and now all my noise problems are fixed.

If you are bringing in a spoken word file for 'mixing' and 'mastering' before uploading to the web or a podcast service, would you do the normalize function first before doing any editing or use the gain level within Studio One to get the audio to an appropriate level for mixing/mastering? (By mastering I just mean using a limiter on the main mix to get the level up.)

Rx plugins can correct noise floor noise on vocals very easily even if you record too low without affecting the vocal really at all. Ofcourse, knowing how to record properly is a must have skill though

Hey Joe! Maybe you can help..every time I plug guitar and opt recording button in channel, I get mumbling ( high bass) noise . This get worst when I add effect like Ampire (distorsion) , end it's sounds like tractor. The problem is that this sound is heard on recording . I record to -12dB. But really, as long as you aren't clipping and you have a good NtoF ratio, because once you start mixing the first thing you do is clean up the audio, and gain stage.

Setting the gain right for the guitar, could you elaborate on that please. Just a general idea of what are decent levels to have the amp gain and the interface preamp gain at, and which to prioritize, if necessary? I've just shared with a friend as well :D !

A good Gate setup would help with getting most of it out anyway. Most programs have a stock one!

Hey Joe how's it going, My mom is a professional Studio Engineer/ Musician and her and I have Studio One Professional. She ask me why cant she here her self right before she goes in RED after she had recorded something. what do I have to click on the program or set up? So the first part that she recorded on the song sounds great but, where she needs to start recording she can't hear what she recorded before she starts recording the ne parts it's like the monitoring of some sort? I don't know HELP!!

Click the wrench on the left-hand side of the mixer or arranger and play around with the tape style setting

Joe, I saw a how to mix video a while back, can't remember who did it, but the person said the number one step before mixing was to go through each track and "strip the noise" i.e. delete the dead sections between sound events. This seemed very tedious and I'm not sure what the real benefit is. Can you comment on that as a process step, needed, un-needed or other?

Super easy! kzread.info/dash/bejne/g4JmtayEocatkqQ.html Benefit is almost entirely for audio tracks, where there is “noise” between signals. MIDI tracks don’t have “noise” between signals, except for maybe amp/pedal modeling where the effect is designed to sound like a real amp “noise” and all.

Super easy, but often not needed, especially with DIGITAL recording vs. analog recording. As Joe mentions... a lot of these rules-of-thumb (record as hot as possible, record so it's close to 0 dB, delete every scrap of 'dead sections', etc.) often trace back to the analog days, when not doing these things could lead to a noisy track, especially if/when layering/overdubbing. With the noise floor as low as it is today, 'stripping the noise' is sometimes needed if using noisy equipment (amps) or if there is other noise in the room (squeaky drum throne? noisy breathing? turning the pages?), but it's often not needed otherwise. As always, listen, and decide if it is needed or not.

@@lofomuses I agree. Although a more important reason for “stripping silence” is to save space and cpu usage, especially on audio tracks. I have a pretty decent processor and I still get occasional playback glitches. “Cleaning up” your tracks in general can help significantly when there’s a lot of audio tracks and/or using a lot of plugins

Joe...there is always noise floor..but how do I remove this problem? How do the pros solves this kind of problem? Can you do a tutorial? Thx:)

Sometimes people use a noise gate. That is a decent solution in the absence of RX9 de-noise (because it’s expensive) but dialing in the right settings can take some work.

What “noise” are you actually trying to get rid of in a DAW? Like for any sort of audio signal just use Strip Silence tool. And MIDI signals don’t have “noise” that isn’t programmed.

Where there is electricity, there is noise. Even digital programs rely on analog components, therefore noise. When gain gets increased, so does the noise. The only time clipping sounds good is when it happens in a pre-amp section of a guitar or bass amp.

RX9 de-clip can help with clipping

I’m having a huge problem with Noise Floor. I record audiobooks for ACX and when I submit my recordings the Noise floor is Wayy to low (-100 to -200 Db). It has to be -60 or more. I use compression, EQ, Deesser. How in the world can I get the noise floor to come up to -60 or better. I am seriously going nuts here that no one can demonstrate how to actually adjust the noise floor level.

People worried about noise aren't making music. Ouch... the truth stings a bit.

Keep in mind folks, your LIFE has noise floor. So does every room and car you listen to music in. So does the surrounding street with your buds in. And absolutely the club has a super high noise floor.. I think Joe’s is gently trying to say; you maybe so busy looking for the mouse 🐁 that you stop enjoying the house 🏠
