What Is The Max Range For TSS Waterfowl Ammo? TESTED

Спорт

I use a ballistics gel and pattern test to determine the maximum range for APEX Waterfowl TSS hunting ammo. I tried this #9 TSS duck hunting load at 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80 yards to see how far it can be effective. In this TSS ammo review I found the APEX load to have serious long range capabilities, it is very capable of long distance usage with excellent pattern density and ballistics gel penetration.

I did this test at a certified range with a Mossberg 940 Pro Waterfowl shotgun and a Carlson’s Sporting Clays ported full choke tube. The load was the 3” APEX Waterfowl TSS, 1550 FPS, with 1 ounce of #9 Tungsten Super Shot. This is outstanding for hunting ducks, geese, or just about anything that flies. Apex provided the shells tested in this video at my request, and Carlson's sent the choke tube, thanks to them for their support. #duckhunting #waterfowlhunting #goosehunting

    I will say I shoot the warchief #5s at wood ducks and have stoned multiple woodies at 60 yards with my muller passing choke. Not crippled, 1 shot and done. I think the video where you shot the 3/5 blend at 60 yards you mentioned the #5s in the blend getting around 2.5” of penetration in the ballistics gel. I could definitely see the tss crushing woodies at 80yards based on the test results. Awesome video by the way!

    For waterfowl, a 5/8oz load of #9 TSS is more than enough firepower at 225 pellets. That's more than double the pellets of a 20ga 3" #2 steel at 107 pellets per shell. The TSS pellets carry a lot further, have less recoil, with no muzzle jump and much less sound. I prefer the 28ga and the .410 for ducks, geese, cranes and everything in between. These guns are fun to shoot and deadly from 20 yards to 90+ yards.

    That's amazing. A while back I watched a video of someone shooting wigeon with a .410! And TSS shot; they were killing them beyond 50yds! The patterns were only about the size of a soccer ball at 40 yds -TOO tight. This shot would be great out of a cylinder choke -you could not miss? I think I would rather have 7's though. I have drilled the rib on my A5 and installed a stainless mid sight. You are not realy conscious of it when shooting, but it helps on lining up swimming crippled ducks and sitting squirrels! Keep up the good work.

  • @TheNewHuntersGuide

    @TheNewHuntersGuide

    Thanks! I'd like a mid-sight honestly. #7s would hurt the pattern too much. #8 or #8.5 would give you more long range capability for Geese.

    This would be interesting to test through a turkey choke to see if they are a viable replacement for the Apex 2oz turkey loads. Basically the same price but you get 10 in this box.

  • @TheNewHuntersGuide

    I did think about that. But the tighter the choke the worse the pattern gets. This was the best choke I tested with these. But to be honest, they are plenty good for a turkey at regular ranges. I will still probably use the more expensive turkey loads just because they hold tighter, but for the casual turkey hunter, these are going to be better than any lead on the market.

    Isn’t #9 a skeet size? With those great patterns wouldn’t you want bigger shot?

  • @TheNewHuntersGuide

    @TheNewHuntersGuide

    8 ай бұрын

    The value of TSS is you can use very small pellets and thus have many more of them. This #9 has about the same ballistics energy as Steel #1 or BB shot. But instead of having 90 pellets in the shell it has 400. Bigger shot would give you more power but less pattern. The pattern is the great advantage. Pattern at range is what extends range. #7s wouldn't have enough pattern at long range to reliably do the job, though it would have more power, it wouldn't be able to bring it to bear.

    When is a 75 yard shot even ethical? In my youth I sky blasted like most young hunters did. If you drop a duck 75 yards away in a pond or slough good luck recovering the bird even with a good dog. Do you have any time in flight data to calculate lead? Judging speed and distance is critical. How good is anyone at 75 yards? I remember (barely) shooting Canadas that were extremely tall with lead. When we stood to shoot someone yelled “lead them a suburban “. Taking shots that MIGHT drop a bird isn’t right.

  • @TheNewHuntersGuide

    @TheNewHuntersGuide

    If you can make the shot, the ammo will do its job. Most hunters aren't able to shoot that far because they don't practice and shoot sporting clays. But for those who do and can make the shot, it's perfectly ethical. Most people will miss by a car length, but the cost of the ammo keeps that kind of poor shooting in check.

    Where the edges of the patterns well defined? The War Chief was a kill or miss pattern. The stuff is phenomenal. Stoned a bunch of roosters with it at max range too. Hammering snows way better than steel. TSS 7 shot would kill past 100. Do you think the 1550 is necessary?

  • @TheNewHuntersGuide

    @TheNewHuntersGuide

    8 ай бұрын

    You can freeze the video and look at the patterns yourself. #7 has the power past 100 but I dont think it has the pattern due to the fewer pellets, unless you are using 2oz turkey loads. Is the 1550 needed? No, but it isn't hurting the pattern at all. Its mostly marketing I think, adding more TSS shot is super expensive, adding more velocity for show is nearly free. And the recoil isn't bad due to the 1oz payload.@@scottsantrizos6849
