"What is the Mark of a Humble Person?" + 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time (Fr. Mike's Homily)

Ойын-сауық

Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it is thinking of yourself less.
The Book of Sirach makes the claim that the humble person is loved more than a giver of gifts. But what does it mean to be humble? Does it mean what most of us automatically think of? Or does it mean something deeper...something freer? True humility gives a person the ability to pay attention.

@@veradux5580 Really? What I have learned over the past few months is that the catholic church claims to have been the only church in existence until the protestants broke away yet as the Apostles and Disciples criss crossed the regions they built thousands of churches proclaiming Jesus resurrected! In Acts they are first called Christians, not catholics. So Christian churches predate catholicism and has existed before, during, and after. The "protestant" movement happened when many realized that the catholic church was practicing false teachings, so many returned to Christianity. The catholic church claims they wrote the Bible, yet they proclaim that us "ordinary", "uneducated" aren't smart enough to interpret it! So apparently John 3:16 is is over our heads and so we can't read what's in the Bible, we have to have it explained to us at Mass. If the catholic church wrote the Bible, brag about writing the Bible, why don't they practice what's in the Bible? The catholic church teaches that's it's ok to have graven images. Odd that they refused to list that warning in their 10 Commandments but warn against wanting your neighbor's stuff! Jesus said there is but one Father, yet aren't we taught to call the priest "Father"? In scripture when Jesus was asked how we should pray He said, "Our Father....", not once did Jesus pray to anyone except God. The catholic church teaches us to pray to Mary and yet cannot provide scripture showing us that she was taken to heaven and isn't asleep in Christ like other Christians. They proclaim that Mary is a perpetual virgin, that she not once had relations with Joseph but in Matthew 1:25 we are told that Joseph waited until Mary had Jesus before he knew her, had relations with her. In Matthew 12:46 Jesus is told His mother and brothers are outside and He pointed to the believers in front of Him and said, "Here are My mother and brothers"! In Matthew 13:55-56 we are told that He is the son of Joseph, son of Mary, and it lists by name all of His brothers and even mentions that He has sisters! Three solid scriptures showing us Mary did not remain a virgin. Name on verse that tells us she remained a virgin... Yet the church would have you stop praying to God and pray to her! In scripture where are we told to pray to anyone except for God? In Matthew the catholic church teaches that when Jesus said "Peter, I will build My Church upon "this" rock" they explain it as Jesus is telling Peter since Peter means "rock" I am going to put all of My hopes on you to carry everything I am doing into the future. Nevermind in verse 23 Jesus destroys Peter and calls him, "Satan"! Nevermind that Peter denied Jesus three times! Nevermind that Paul chastized him for his false teachings! Nevermind that in all of Peter's writings he refers to Jesus the Rock, the Cornerstone! Not once mentioning that he (Peter) is the rock and that he is creating the catholic church. Scripture tells us there is one Mediator, Christ Jesus! The catholic church teaches us to pray to Mary, to the saints.,. On and on, verse after verse of scripture is ignored as church doctrine is pushed. Stop bragging about creating the Bible if you refuse to acknowledge what's in it. Stop demanding people don't read it and wait for your explanation of what's in it! The message of the cross is a simple one, Jesus came to be the Lamb of God, to endure the cross for our sins! The catholic church teaches doctrine that does it's best to make the gospel harder to understand so that the congregation will accept what's taught as the truth and give it more weight than actual scripture! How about instead of coming back to his videos again and again you take that time and read your Bible, again and again? Take that time on your knees praying to God, again and again?

My Father, now in Coma, gave to much attention even won’t asked for, he made it know with music chosen or each individual, now we each pretty much remember how he would play it over and over the whole day for the individual. People take elders for granted while alive until it’s no longer there. A Father, a grandfather, a friend, a businessman, a. Brother always making the time to say “Hello, is there anything you need” to his kids. He was the perfect sample and teacher to humility. He gave the little retirement $ to help as much he could for others needs, he just wanted to help even though he was left broke and nothing to eat.

Thank you so much for this.. I have had it all wrong. Or more so, I had the definition of Humility, but not the whole thing. I struggle with self image, and I used to be so bad that it literally caused me physical pain to be complimented. Back in High School through my young adulthood. Thank God, he sent me people that helped me get over that. Even with that help I was still missing understanding of true humility. I was still struggling with that self image... Until now. After all these years I finally heard what makes perfect sense. Thank you Father Mike. Because you are right, the other way.. the way I was doing it was not it. No wonder I still felt lost. I have truly taken this to heart.. Thank you. God Bless you and all your Works. Viva Cristo Rey

Many years ago, I had the privilege to meet Fr. Joe Martin (of "Chalk Talk" fame). He put it this way: the reason most of us like to visit grandma is because it is likely that she is a "You" person. What would You like to do; what would You like for dinner; what is Your favorite desert; etc . Grandma is all about You! If you want to be complimented for being a wonderful conversationalist, develop your listening skills.

This is so strange as when I prayed last week the Holy Spirit clearly said to me humility. I pondered about this and then your u tube channel came into my sighting. God is always there we just need to remember to have our quiet 🤫 time and shut out all the turmoil in this wicked world.

I think one of the most powerful things you can do is take someone seriously and pay attention when they are opening up to you. There is a big reason why they share with you and no one else. It takes trust for someone to talk to you, so you have to act like everything matters. Most people like to be treated like they matter.

What a wonderful homily Fr Mike. I really needed to hear this and it helps me understand my late husband better. He was a truly humble man, a St Joseph kind of man whom I would get up and do things while listening to him and it would upset him even though I could repeat everything he said. I believe that our "undivided attention and our time" is something quite valuable. I need to do more this. Holy Spirit, help me be a better listener.

*Dear Father Mike, thanks for your passionate preaching. Kindly note , humility can be tested by humiliation. When one can accept a humiliation and could easily get over it, and try to forgive as well love the one who humiliated him, ....at least with a small prayer, then we can smell the blossoming of humility.* Another aspect as you said is being approachable. Considering a person is in a big position, always busy and wears an aura of.... sort of celebrity status speciality in a field -( maybe we can take you as an example Fr.) If another stranger, a nondescript one ,could easily approach him for anything......without appointments or passing through so many protocols and procedures, .....that shows the presence of humility in that big shot person , who is in fact trying to be humble. Thanks Father. God bless you 🙏
