In this episode, we explore the International Phonetic Alphabet, or IPA. The IPA is an important aspect of linguistics and language learning and can aid us in the process. The core questions are: What makes the International Phonetic Alphabet unique, how was the IPA developed and what is its history, and lastly how is the IPA used?
We go on to explore the aim of the International Phonetic Alphabet, and that its not just a creation of its own but that it was influenced by other phonetic alphabets like the Romic Alphabet.
The IPA can be used in many contexts but especially linguists and language learners use it. Linguistics can use it for phonetic transcription and for fieldwork, to document endangered languages for future studies.
In language learning and language teaching it helps learners to understand the precise pronunciation of words.
In the further context, we talk about the pulmonic consonants of the International Phonetic Alphabet and the various places of articulation like "bilabial", "alveolar", and "retroflex", as well as the manners of articulation like "plosive", "fricative", and "approximant". Afterwards we do the same with the vowels and their backness, height and rounding.
The diacritics of the International Phonetic Alphabet add precision and nuance to the vast array of symbols which are especially useful for linguists and linguistics in general. The same goes for the suprasegmentals in the IPA, adding more precision but concerning multiple segments of a word instead of just one sound.
To be able to use the IPA we also take a look at the notation of the IPA, to know how to use square brackets and slashes correctly in the context of phonetic and phonemic transcription.

*Some of the pronunciations for the symbols in the IPA might not be accurate as I tend to have a natural aspiration after most consonants due to my native language. I try my best to pronounce them as accurately as possible

There are some problems with the audio in this video. I probably know what the problem is but I couldn't fix it anymore without having to redo the entire video. Next week's video should have no problems with the audio!

If you use GBoard, there is actually support for the IPA. You can add it like any other language to the keyboard :)
