I just hope they don’t go with STO for this. I’m fine with Picard (a trained if not active archeologist) being wrong with his more optimistic view of them, but I don’t need even more actually everyone is an omnicidal jerk in my Star Trek.

@@rubaiyat300 Given that the remaining Iconians have already been mentioned in Disco i head canon that they are the continued faction of the Iconian empire from a slightly different canonical version of STO's timeline and have just kept to themselves around their homeworld. They don't care about other powers while other powers don't want to mess with them.

Consider this is still in the aftermath of the Burn, so galactic travel is still kind of shot, lots of areas isolated... Having access to instantaneous travel gateways WOULD help a lot with that too, and fit in thematically...

I do hope the Library is Memory Alpha... it would be nice to see it fleshed out more!

I know the "Iconians!" mentions can be a running joke, but it'd be poetic to have the latest point of the Star Trek timeline that we've seen include one of the franchise's oldest races timeline wise, like a bookend (for now, until Starfleet Academy anyway...).

Well, someone's gotta suggest the least likely theory. The artifact could be Caeliar in origin, tying together both the borg angle and being a suitably ancient species.

Yup! Which puts the borg back in the state of having no known origins. But Star Trek timelines are funny things, even something that didn't happen or was seemingly un-written tends to come back around. Rediscovered at a different place or time, perhaps on the other side of the mirror, or at least a mirror. /me shrugs

Which is actually kind of frustrating, you know. All this new canon seems to be ripping of from the "beta canon" (as is usually referred to) after they pushed it aside in the first place. Oh well... but my provincial brain is not fitted for these cosmopolitan subjects. xD

"surviving members of the Iconian Empire" were already mentioned as being a thing in season 4. I personally think that mention is all we're ever going to get of them.

And something needs to happen that results in Disco being parked in a nebula for centuries....

That’s just how large groups work. Mainly cause you get more ideas and the bad ones sink to the bottom of comments, and more importantly most of the ideas presented don’t have to actually have to do the hard work of filling in dialogue and filming and VFX budgets altering what their vision is. And then even with perfect text, everyone has their own perfect idea of what that text means. Just like most movie monsters are way scarier in your head than on the screen.

They really should give the artifact back to the survivors of the Iconian Empire at the end of the show. ;) But seriously, since you brought them up, I find it interesting that at the time of the Burn, Ni'var was working on gates. Maybe the former Romulans brought information about Iconian gates with them and inspired the work? And, finally, they meet an ancient survivor of this Empire and she calls herself, "T'Ket." Friendly being, totally over the destruction of her homeworld so long ago, kinda glows violet... (And sending the STO fans into total shock).

I'm wondering if the romulan ship will give an answer for why the Romulans didn't suddenly end up in control of the universe with the Burn because their ships didn't use dilithium... One other theory might be that they're doing their version of the Tox Uthat insanity. There is also a theory that a few people have had of the mirror universe involvement being about the recovery of the original USS Defiant

Considering it's Discovery, I don't think it'll be something we've seen in the franchise before. Unlike Picard, Discovery actually comes up with new things...

Its some insane galaxy ending apocalypse invasion threat that literally only Micheal can stop. Also, I thought they cancelled Discovery after the abysmal S4 performance.

they could be sort of taking an idea from sto, maybe the Romulans did find the world heart from Iconia but it wasn't Sela in this show maybe it was Taris. It would be a bit strange leaving it on a ship abandoned but if you were only interested in it because the Tal Shiar told you to be, I can imagine a mutiny if your planets just blown up. My hope is we finally get the location of the Iconians and maybe see them in the show

What about the phasing cloak. It makes the user Iinvincible; pretty powerful to me. And it goes back to tng and it was a scout ship. I could see that originally the phased cloak came from iconians originally which we weren’t told during tng; possible?

Good breakdown and analysis. It could be Iconian gateway technology. I thought of something related but more powerful perhaps: the civilisation that built the Guardian of Forever. The ability to transport instantly to any point in space, time or dimension would be the greatest treasure. It’d also explain why mirror universe is involved. They’re probably looking for the equivalent to a mobile Guardian of Forever. Thanks!

You joke but this sounds like something Cronenburg's character would actually say.

It needs to be something the Federation would use a limited resource on. And something only Discovery can counter. The portals would be a FTL game changer, like they were in TNG. And Discovery is the only ship able too chase enemies that can use gateways. So 3:15 makes a lot of sense. It could also be T'kon. 4:45 To be fair, _anything_ from a 800 year old ship is an artifact. Doesn't mean it was one back when the ship still flew. It could just be the lost secrets of Romulan Singularity Drives.

I thought you might also refer to the poster art and the glyphs there and how that fits in... Thanks for a great breakdown

I just hope the character Book is finally killed off for real. Burnham has had several universe risking breakdowns because he's in danger, contrary to how every other Starfleet captain would act, especially one raised on Vulcan....

I hope some day another show picks up the torch for the 32nd Century because the lore possibilities are endless and Discovery hasn't even scratch the surface yet. I hope Season 5 is nothing but lore.

Would be fun for it to be iconians considering how disconnected the universe is after the burn, a universal gateway would be cool

it could be iconian gates - it could also be the borg adapted traversal technology from voyager that was installed in the artefact cube. (sicarians i think they were named)

4:02 If this treasure is indeed is Arretan or something related to ancient Ni'varian lost & forgotten history. I wonder if the dates back to Ganmadan, the Day of Annihilation caused by the Seb-Cheneb that was reference in Picard's 1st season. If that is case we may get a reference to the Tkon Empire too since Michael Chabon went on the record to say there was a connection with that lost civilization & Picard 1st season. Just throwing it out there in case it is not the Iconians

The set design with the table and controls gave off some SG-1 Dakara vibes.

Omega molecule stabilizer bluprint. The iconinans cracked it and powered their gateways with it. Omega moleculse destroys subspace, and the Romulan supernova was a subspace supernova. My bet is that the romlan supernova was actually a weponized stable omega molecule. If you think about it, an already stable molecule blown up in a controlled manner would travel in subspace not destroy it, but in turn it destroys matterspace. The perfect weapon and the perfect energy source, just like nuclear power. it would be a fitting narrative.

the alien person looks a bit like Laas from DS9 - maybe its one of the species he "never quite got into immitating fully"

In the Romulan starter in STO We find a ancinet sword on New Romulus; it could be related to whatever time period the sword belonged to.

what about the Tkon Empire. they were destroyed by a super nova much like the Romulans home world faced. The Last Outpost Star Trek: The Next Generation episode The Last Outpost (season 1, episode 5)

Considering it's a device so mundane everyone in the 25th century has it( if you've played STO for that item.)

What about a T'Konian artifact? That ship seems kinda similar to the T'Konian vessel we see in Resurgence, at least in terms of being fairly geometric. Another option we haven't seen in a while, what if it's a Preserver artefact?

In the trailer there was a few second clip of Starbase 1 by the looks of it.

I definitely think we are gonna see some iconian stuff this season but I think all that is a red herring for the trailer and the real mystery will be something else entirely after all last season they did reference iconian remnants so there is a chance all the iconian looking stuff is just from a single iconian themed episode

I dont know why but I have some feeling we might learn more about the machine race featured in Picard s1.

Would be funny if they go through all that and it's a recipe for Iconian biscuits. That the writers took a joke from a TNG episode with similar plot and made the joke real.

If I recall correctly in one of the STO Iconian war missions (spoiler alert incoming) there was a mention of the iconian war being delayed in the time travel stuff, so what if the prime timeline the iconian war is delayed to discovery’s time, and this season sets it up for Starfleet Academy?

In one of the STO missions, they attempted to delay the war using time travel stuff, but doing so led to Romulus being assimilated, so they undid that change (as best as possible, the change to reset things changed other things, which also helped lead to the temporal cold war)

Given that the Federation and the Iconians are in contact with eachother, but not allies or friends, they may not take kindly to the UFP using thier network In addition, something has the happen on the Discovery for "Calypso" to take place. Perhaps the treasure proves too great and Discovery is hidden away to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands

T'kon? also, it's spore drive would be the ideal means for intergalactic travel... Andromeda perhaps(Iconian?)
