same,so annoying when randiom local GP's try to tell me that me 13 years of bipolar diagnosis is wrong and i actually have BPD .......arrogant even

Thank you for the details. I have Bipolar 1. Diagnosed for 18 years by 4 psychiatrists. I got a new therapist that wanted to diagnose me with BPD and didn’t want to hear my opinion about it. I was not on a good Med combo when I met her and rapid cycling and when you are depressed you do feel empty, you can feel abandoned. But then when you return to baseline you feel fine. The emptiness was temporary

The main difference that I see between the two that helps me to distinguish is that Borderline does not have any manic episodes like Bipolar does.

I have complex trauma symptoms and it looks to me like they overlap a lot with borderline personality disorder which scared the crap out of me and it seems all of these mental disorders overlap greatly and I think 50 years down the road all the names are going to be different and the grouping so I'll probably be different because it seems like such an emerging science. Very interesting and informative videos.

I wish my ex boyfriend watched these videos. He never understood the difference between the two and always assumed that I'm borderline. It's hurtful, but it's understandable. Thank you for these videos. They give me hope.

Now I understand why psychiatrists couldn’t agree on a diagnosis after a recent hospitalization. I have been diagnosed with bipolar II since my early teens. After watching this video, it seems very clear to me that I indeed have both bipolar II and BPD as one of them suspected. Very informative. Regardless of diagnosis, my treatment has stayed the same.

This is so interesting, I have been diagnosed with bpd (borderline) a few years ago. As well as a few other disorders but the only medication that has ever worked for me is something that is for off label use for bi polar disorder. I went to the doctor originally because I suspected I had bi polar disorder and now I am interested to learn more regarding comorbidity as I was unaware that the two disorders could be diagnosed together in one person. My doctor originally told me that it was very very rare for someone to have both. Thank you for making this content and please continue the bpd series. It’s very helpful for those who cannot afford dbt but want to become more self aware of their disorder and actions 💕

Great video! Borderline Personality Disorder and Bi Polar Disorder have many symptoms that overlap. It was interesting that abandonment issues are much more pronounced in BDP but can occur in Bipolar Disorder. Especially if it happens after a relationship related stressor

Interesting. I’ve been diagnosed with borderline in the past when I had a suicidal hospital visit. My psychologist I see right now said it didn’t fit me and that I was bipolar and I lived in a lot self doubt about myself, and not sure what I had. This video completely showed me I am not borderline. Thank you!

Thank you so much Dr Grande you explained the difference between BPD and bipolar so eloquently. I have such a hard time explaining that I am not bipolar, I have BPD. Just found your channel and have been watching for hours now. I’ve actually been diagnosed with both. This is a great educational video.

As someone with bipolar 2 I really appreciate this video-- I've long been frustrated by people's confusion of bipolar with borderline and thought it was mostly because of the similar names and general ignorance, not realizing that there was a lot of similarity in the presentation as well. I'm grateful that all of my health providers were able to tell what was going on with me and accurately diagnosis and medicate me. It seems to me like the most obvious differentiator *should* be the cyclic nature of bipolar, but as someone who was diagnosed over a decade ago and took 5 or 6 years to genuinely accept and believe my diagnosis without wavering, I think it can take a really long time to establish for sure that there is a cycle pattern going on, especially if you spend long times in one state and your hypomania isn't particularly extreme or detrimental to your life. Also, while there are specific happenings that can influence or induce me to cycle (especially if I am not taking a mood stabilizer), but these are not relationship or interpersonal events: things that can include substance use, abrupt sleep changes or abrupt changes in environment or lifestyle (e.g. going from being a couch potato to exercising regularly). Additionally I'd like to share a potential differentiating sign: IME many of my bipolar symptoms manifest physically, in the form of severe hypersomnia and insomnia cycles and long periods of no appetite (including food revulsion). I'm not sure if those are also traits of people with borderline, but almost every bipolar person I've talked with has experienced mostly unexplained-by-stress sleep or appetite problems at some time or another. Thanks so much for this video, very informative!

Yes this is a good comparison but I think we must distinguish "internal" and "external" differences. For example fear of abandonment is an "internal" symptom and it's very-very difficult to say about somebody that "You fear from abandonment" because the border persons often don't say it directly and sometimes they (especially quiet borderline persons) act "misteriously" and the other person doesn't find sense of it (ie the border person breaks up with her/his friend because he/she fears of abandonment - and it's nonsense, right?). So I think the most obvious symptoms are the borderline rage (this is often seems to be scary and "meaningless") and the fast mood switching (and this second one often seems to be without any reason).

I appreciate the distinction provided for the two disorders, given the confusion that arises due to the overlap of symptoms, especially with Bipolar II, and likelihood of comorbidity. The symptoms of mania with bipolar and chronicity of abandonment and emptiness, and persistence in symptoms with Borderline do seem to differentiate the two disorders. Though I understand what the research indicates, the association of stress only with Borderline is a factor in which I remain unconvinced.

the mania of bi polar and stress and is everything you just described as borderline personality disorder. Wow this is amazing but i wish i had known this earlier and i wish i had found this earlier.

I was diagnost with bipolar 1 last year. It wasn't a shock because I've had to take meds for it almost 3 years. And my paranoia was just a strong strong feeling of everyone is wAnting the worse for me they are helping but they are in on all the bad stuff on what's going to happen. Like they know its gonna happen but they don't care. There was trauma in my life But not so bad to where I was attempting suicide every other day. Thoughts of abandoned would be in the mix. But in the lows I was just mentally gone thinking of things I wanted that would never happen. Kinda like I was brain washing myself by accident because of what I was expeirencing. I just didn't know what I did wrong. To feel EXTREMELY emotionally high to HORRIBLY LOW the next week. But now that I am taking my meds it is way more controlled. I still have my intense high and lows but I'm not self harming anymore or attempting suicide anymore. I still feel like moods will always be intense. My personality and ideas change kinda like patterns. But again goes from high to lows there is no "fine" or in between mind sets. Does that make since?

Years ago my college roommate would tell me often that she was "manic-depressive." Is this equivalent to Bipolar Disorder?

I find your videos most helpful in my marriage has a push, pull, and my husband distances himself from me, he moved out of the bedroom into another part of the house over 3 years ago. I love him and it's difficult to live with him as a roommate. He's handicapped and that's the only reason I stayed. I don't know how to help him or our marriage

As someone with bipolar who knows a few people with bpd I wouldn't think anyone with knowledge of both could possibly confuse or compare them

My mother is suspected to have bi-polar, but she doesn’t exhibit impulsiveness. She does have major depressive episodes, periods of stability, and then periods of paranoia, anger, irritability. She was very stable while on lithium for six years.

Great...so...as far as I can put together over past few months, I'm fucked lol, INFJ personality type, with ptsd, a touch of addhd and now borderline personality disorder with a hint of mania. Half way through the video I'm like "is it possible to have both?" in last third it answered my question. Explains a lot, big help understanding my self. Thank you. Thinks I might go appointment. Get my shit together

Great explanation. Lots of similarities. Can someone have bipolar and cptsd? Ive heard that professionals ( DSM ) doesnt recognize cptsd but someone that has alot of trauma from childhood into adulthood - thats complex ptsd? Its all so confusing. Thanks for your insightful videos.

LIFEISAJOURNEY LETITGO C-ptsd occurs when the trauma happens for an extended period of time. Ptsd occurs more from a single type of traumatic event. Both can absolutely occur with Bipolar.

Absolutely! Cptsd is often misdiagnosed as bipolar actually.

Thanks for the information. In my research on Borderline Personality Disorder, I read can be misdiagnosed as Bipolar Disorder, but I do not see a lot of information on these two disorders being comorbid. Are they mutually exclusive?

She fears being alone and one time went into a crying fit with the prospect of being alone in her house. She either idolizes or hates. Her rages are long- lasting and violent. How do they compare in terms of energy changes? I am diagnosed BPD but I have shifts in mood and energy, usually a couple weeks at a time, as well as day to day. Could I have bipolar too? I will be super productive/active for a while and then crash into depression or a mix of the two (agitated depression). I don't see how this can be related to BPD? Can you explain please x

I find it odd that I was diagnosed with both but as time went on, i felt like my therapy was moving more towards treating the Borderlined Personality Disorder and yes, I can see that I Suffer from the Borderlined more so than the bi-polar, i was thinking maybe the bi-polar was an early misdiagnosis or some thing

I do wonder if the name will be changed to reflect more accurately what the disorder encompasses, regarding Borderline, since the name is not consistent with the disorders characteristics.

You should do the difference between bpd and did (dissociative identity disorder) because of the oscillating identity issues.

I would like Dr. Grande provide his evaluation of a person I knew many years ago. The subject was a (young at start) woman. She lived in a country other than the U.S.A. She was exceptionally intelligent, but without the level of education commensurate with her intelligence. She was exceptionally beautiful, very charismatic, very outgoing, cheerful, and friendly, In her early 20s she married an American, an intellectual, educated professional, in his early 30s. On the day of her wedding, her personality changed. It was still semi-normal, but somewhat abrasive. As time went on, it got worse. She began having manic episodes, which got more and more violent, including attempts to murder her husband. After these episodes, she had little memory of what happened. She had one extreme depressive episode where she attempted suicide by starvation, she did not eat for a couple of weeks., During this period she went to restaurants, ordered food and stared at it but did not eat. During this period, she started and operated a very successful business, in her home country. She emigrated to the U.S.A., with her husband. The things got worse. She attempted murder suicide by trying to cause car crashes. They then decided to divorce. The day of this decision, her personality went back to the charismatic, very outgoing, cheerful, and friendly person she once was. Single again, and back to her original self. She attracted suitors. She married a man, who was the opposite of her first husband. He was not very bright, unmotivated, minimally educated,psychologically fragile, employed in a low paying job, and also sort of an imitation tough guy. The same personality change happened when the married. Rather than physical violence, she used episodes of psychological torture on her second husband. They were divorced, and her personality reverted to the charismatic, very outgoing, cheerful, and friendly person she once was. She got the house, the car, etc. She wisely gave up on marriage. I lost contact with her, but many years later, I learned, from a third party, that she was considering a third marriage, this time with a verey religious retired old man; different from both her first and second husbands. I lost contact, with the third party that knew her, so I don't know what happened.

The inpatient unit I went to diagnosed me with Borderline personality disorder and didnt tell me ;-; Then my therapist was trying to diagnose me with bipolar 2 before the inpatient unit. I am now not diagnosed with either because of my age ;-;

i am biplar 2, BPD, ADD and schzio and its so messed up that therapy isnt working neither do the meds and its feels like i have no cure at all. :(

Actually I'm bipolar 1 and I have both manic and hypomanic episodes. They don't have to be exclusive.

What do you think about the medications given to these people does Adderall affect both the same way? Are there any other drugs on the market that you feel work better?

So really the two disorders are one in the same with some criteria that makes them different? Also it makes sense that these disorders are comorbid.

from personal experience I would say it can push a depressive episode. I've had some extreme reactions but I had smatterings of PTSD it could very well have played off of

Is it possible to have borderline personality disorder and not have a fear of abandonment?

I exhibit enough symptoms to qualify for a BPD diagnosis, but they only seem to present during manic/depressive episodes. Because I don’t exhibit the symptoms within my “normal” periods, I haven’t gotten a diagnosis for BPD. It’s really confusing- does anyone else experience this?

Dr Grande can you please help me understand something. I am a man diagnosed with bpd and bipolar 2. Is this possible and want does this look like. I know what it feels like. Is this something where they have to put bipolar in there for maybe Insurance purposes. I would really like to see and video about them both together in a person.

How can a narcissist step parent turn two beautiful open loving girls into the exact carbon copy of him if only in their lives for 4 years? I know he did it he said to them very early on I'm going to show you how your mother should be treated and I'm going to show you what it's like to have a dad as their father who I was married to for 17 years was in prison for domestic violence against me. Told me he was going to help me raise my daughters they were nine and twelve when he entered their lives by the time he left their lives four years later they are his exact carbon copy. Cold calculating manipulative Liars who claimed he put in their mind to take my life and in a roundabout way they have tried we are estranged right now they tell me they know right from wrong and that they have done wrong and continue to do wrong but they don't stop. They play one against the other keep me divided from everyone else in their life so that I don't tell these people the truth. They continue to lie about me lie to me constantly and are always hurting me in one form or another. They have been abusive to me in every form of abuse including physical. I want to know who is it that I could get them to go with me and speak to to find out if he has done this to them in some way my oldest has been inpatient they say she has bipolar but others looking and say borderline. The youngest has been impatient but she has never told the truth. The truth of the things they did it's just horrific I still suffer nightmares and I lost everything my home my car friends my family almost my life I kept staying I was trauma bonded no doubt but also to my own detriment tried to get them the help that they so desperately need. Is this a lost cause or is there someone out there that can help so I can get my family back together?

No they are not. Obviously people with BPD could have narcissistic traits, just like anybody. I think it's not possible to have NPD and BPD together. But it is possible to have BPD and bipolar together. Also, mania/hypomania (in bipolar) can seem like narcissism at times

These are both triggered: borderlines by direct people in their lives, bipolar by AI remote neural monitoring. Sad. But borderlines can get rid of their “abuser” while bipolar is a little trickier bc it’s connected to your brain

In my experiences: narcassism, pyschopathy,sociopathy, borderline, anti social personality are 90% the same. to me its just the demons in them vary slightly or the number of demons in the person varies.

MIXING DRUGS, PILLS, POT, FENTANYL, METHAMPHETAMINES, ALCOHOL WITH PSCH. MED'S IS ALSO DANGEROUS TOO 😢😢😢😢😢RIGHT??5/2/2024 I'M WORRIED ABOUT MY FRIEND
