My belt colour order is: White Yellow Orange Green Blue Brown Black. But we use the Brown belt for 1st,2nd and 3rd kyu. We also have belts with a mixture of colours, e.g. blue-brown to differentiate people who failed to progress from blue to brown.

We've got nearly the same system where I live. Except for the "people who failed" part. We do have a mix of white and a color for kids, though. So before they reach for example Orange they must go through White with orange stripe, Orange with white stripe, and then finally a fully orange.

I started Shotoryu (old school Shotokan) in 1970. We first used a white rope until we learned stretching and basic exercises. We were then allowed to wear our white belts. We only had 3 belts. White (6th, 5th, 4th kyu), then brown (3rd, 2nd,1st kyu), then black belt after passing an exam. If you failed you had to wait 6 months to retest. Our highest black belt rank was Godan (5th dan). The title "Sensei" was only used after 3rd dan. After my 5th dan I received higher ranks from American Associations. Our belts today are white, yellow, green, brown (3 levels) before black belt. Our karate was harsh, but real. All self defense oriented. I enjoy your channel. Thank you.😮

I am san kyu. Brown in our system. I've always liked the legend of how the belt color system started. White like new snow. Then yellow as if seeing the sun. Green after rolling in the grass. Brown after digging in the dirt. Finally black when the knowledge cannot be washed away.

I thought there was more homogeneity, actually. In my surroundings we have white for beginners, then yellow, orange, green, blue, brown. They are assigned in the dojo, but certified by the national federation. Black belt is awarded only by federation, and is black from shodan to godan; rokudan on get a white-red belt. I am godan, but this is my ceiling, as I could get rokudan only if I were (but I am not) a teacher or an international referee.

I am 3rd Dan of Shotokan Karate in Brazil and we had huge JKA influence due lots of Karate instructors sent from Japan to Brazil by Nakayama sensei on the 50's period. The belt color classification today is based on 7 steps of kyu rank from 7 to 1 as following sequency: White, yellow, red, orange, green, purple, brown after starts Dan rank from 1 to 10 with Black color only.

I myself is 55 years of age and found my way back to karate after 30 years, now training for the same Sensei I had back then. I'm now at 4 kyu hoping to go to shodan before I turn 60.

Love your vids brother ,always excellent and informative 🙏⛩️😉 I was a member of the JKA (Japan Karate Association) doing traditional Shotokan for years when younger . Our belts went in the following order but we're nowhere near as easy as today's standards to achieve : White Yellow Orange Green Purple Brown Brown /single white stripe Black (Dan etc) Getting to Black was a lot more than just 3 years and we didn't have 6 year Olds wearing them most definitely 🙏 Ironically I now sell Samurai armour for a living and realised my old sensei's dreams by calling him up 20 years later and suiting him up in a nice Yoroi to work with me at a demonstration lol. Cheers from Australia, keep up the awese content 🤘

I started Waldo Ryu in 1965 and changed to Shotokan in 1966 where I remained for over 40 years. The belt colours should go darker as they progress so that they can be more easily dyed, rather than changed. At one point a message came from high up that the first belt should be red not white. This was quickly reversed when it was found that red belts were for 10th Dan!

Are beginner White Belt Students not considered 10th Kyu yet? Why are there different colors for each Kyu? Does that mean you have to test 4 times to go from 4th Kyu to 3rd Kyu? There are 3 browns and 2 greens? And finally, the one you brought up to, gray? I don't have anything against the color gray, just surprised.

I took an Okinawan style in high school and our system was: White Yellow Orange Purple Green Blue Brown Black. But we also had an intermediate rank between each belt rank except for white, that consisted of a central black strip running lengthwise down the center of the belt. So it would be white, yellow, yellow/black, orange, orange/black, etc.

Here in our federation the belt color order is: White > Yellow > Red > Orange > Green > Purple > Brown > Black (10 dan). Some years ago they included a blue belt before the yellow for kids up to 6 years old that is not able to perform the heian shodan (they cant memorize the kyodos). So, in the exam they perform kihon and sanbon kumite. But I'm still a white belt and I will take my exam for yellow belt in May. =)

Years ago, I studied a style of Karate called U.S.A. Goju. This style was a derivative of an Okinawan style called Goju-ryu. The U.S.A. Goju belt system consisted of 5 colors. White, green, purple, brown and black. There were promotions with each color belt by adding a strip of tape on the tip of your current belt in the color of the next expected belt to achieve. For instance, a promotion while wearing your white belt would be a green strip of tape on the tip of your white belt. There would be two more promotions as a white belt, each time adding an additional strip of tape to your white belt, for a total of three green strips of tape on your belt. The green strips of tape represented the next belt color you were studying to attain, which in this case would be the green belt. This method of promotion continued throughout your practice from belt to belt. From white belt to black belt, it usually took 4 to 5 years of study in U.S.A. Goju.

I earned my 1st degree black belt (1st Dan) in Karazenpo Karate; our belt order: white, yellow, orange, blue, purple, green, brown, black. Beginning with blue, you could earn stripes at the end of the belt, but we called them degrees. Each belt (blue to brown) could have 4 stripes. You could leap-frog degrees, depending on your test performance. Green could be given small teaching responsibilities within a class in the dojo; brown was considered a junior instructor and could be charged with instructing a small group or even the whole class for a few minutes at a time; the sifus were the black belts, with authority based on dan levels. It was a wonderful experience. I have continued training with one of my original sifus, but he is eclectic, drawing from Silat, Hapkido, Sabeel Combatives, Judo, and others, so I am learning a wide variety of skills. 🙏🏼🧡

Our adult belt system is: White - Yellow - Hachi kyu Blue - Shichi kyu Orange - Roku kyu Purple - Go kyu Green - Yon kyu Brown - San kyu Brown w/black stripe - Ni kyu Red w/ black stripe - Ichi kyu Black - Dan ranks Our youth program has “advanced”ranks denoted by a black stripe for white-green belts. I went to an American-style karate dojo when I was in late high school, we had 8 kyu. It went: 8th kyu: White 7th kyu: Yellow 6th kyu: Green (as far as I actually got before transferring to a different club in college) 5th kyu: Blue (I was eligible to test for this but I missed the test date) 4th kyu: Purple 3th kyu: Brown 2nd kyu: Brown 1st kyu: Brown Dan: Black Though there are pics of my old shihan wearing a belt that alternates between white and red, I've seen a lot of high-ranking yudansha (like 7th dan and above) in American karate styles wear that. I had a friend whose Taekwondo organization had a military camo belt.

Very interesting to see the different ways the different systems use the belts. In our Dojo, we are similar to the Okinawan style because the base of our Dojo is Shirin Ryu, but it's been blended with other styles over the years. We have 12 Kyus (the second color is a stripe on the belt): White - Beginner, no Kyu Orange - 12th Kyu Purple-White - 11th Kyu Purple - 10th Kyu Green-White - 9th Kyu Green - 8th Kyu Green-Black - 7th Kyu Blue-White - 6th Kyu Blue - 5th Kyu Blue-Black - 4th Kyu Brown-White or Red-White - 3rd Kyu (those under 16 receive Red belts) Brown or Red - 2nd Kyu Brown-Black or Red Black - 1st Kyu Black or Black-White - Shodan (those under 16 receive the Black belt with a White stripe). I'm not actually sure when/where we start separating or differentiating the Black Belts, but I think it is at 3rd Dan and we start adding Red stripes to the belt.

My first karate instructor came up through the Matsubayashi-Ryu world, but had his own system: white, orange, purple, brown, black. The kyu ranks basically corresponded to kata -- Fukyugata 1-3 for orange, Pinan 1-5 for purple, Naihanchi 1-3 for brown. I moved away for college before I could get that far, though, just recently relearned the Fukyugata and taught myself the Pinan kata. In my WT taekwondo school (with Korean "geup" = kyu), there are a lot more belts (I assume patterned after Shotokan karate) : 10th geup = white 9th geup = yellow 8th geup = orange 7th geup = green 6th geup = purple 5th geup = light blue 4th geup = dark blue 3rd geup = red 2nd geup = light brown 1st geup = dark brown "0th" geup = half-black/half-red And then of course the Dan (black belt ranks). Then we repeat the geup ranks (except "0th") between Dan ranks. (FTR: I'm 1st Dan, 2nd geup, will test for 2nd Dan later this year.)

I was in the American Taekwondo Association (A.T.A.) in the late 80's and early 1990's. The organization added new belt colors when I joined, and we also had a striping system for higher level belts. It was (1) White (2) Orange (3) Yellow (4) Camouflage (5) Green (6) Purple (7) Blue w/ 1-3 stripes (7) Brown w/ 1-3 stripes (8) Red w/ 1-3 stripes (8) First Degree Black Belt. Of course there are several degrees above the lowest black belt. My master was a 6th degree black belt at the time, and earned his 7th degree when I left.

Also, for under-14 yo, you have sub-levels of belts with both colours, like a transition level. Some other independent associations also use Red, but while in others Red is right after Yellow, in other the Red is before Black.

I find the history of the red belt interesting. When I started red was the beginner's belt (still is) then on to 8th kyu white, though this is not always strictly adhered to as a new student's dogi usually comes with a white belt. We also have a red "Master's" belt indicative of going full circle from beginner to Master. Our system has Red, White, Yellow, Orange, Green, Purple, Blue, Brown, Brown (again) then Black. 6th Dan and 7th Dan are awarded a Red/White (kohaku) obi, and 8th Dan and over a plain Red belt (going full circle from beginner to "Master"). The kohaku and aka belts are usually worn on formal occasions, but are optional for everyday dojo training.

Practitioner for over 50 years. Studied various styles. Attained Godan or higher in two of them. With your mention of white, brown, black, in MOST Japanese, Okinawan and Korean forms of MA, green was added between white and brown, for the same reason brown was eventually added - with green designating and "intermediate" student. Now quite and advanced student, but definitely not a pure novice. My two main styles are massively different in kyu belt colors and one even includes a rarity almost never seen in a Japanese or Okinawan style/ Koto Ryu: (note: the stripes mentioned are not mandatory, yet most students have a tendency of using them. Additionally, the stripes are generally the color of the next color belt to be achieved, yet some schools may use black stripes) 10th kyu: white 9: white with a single (usually green) stripe at each end 8: white with 2 stripes at each end 7: white with 3 stripes at each end 6: green with 1 (usually brown) stripe at each end. 5: green with 2 stripes at each end 4: green with 3 stripes at each end 3: brown with a (usually black) stripe at each end 2: brown with 2 stripes at each end 1: brown with 3 stripes at each end I personally love the Koto Ryu belt system, It's simple, straight forward and incurs zero confusion. Goshin Do Goju Ryu: (Please make note of the uncommon order AND the use of a red belt in the kyu ranks - something almost never seen in other type of goju ryu schools) Also note, in some schools, I have seen the 3rd to 6th kyu belts arranged slightly different, with most common variation being: green blue purple ... thus making a rainbow in a progression from light to dark! I generally may see this variation in the schools with a higher ratio of child to adult students. 15 adults and 50 kids in the school? It's generally following the rainbow variation in the ordering of colors. 8 & 9: White 7: Yellow 6: Orange 5: Purple 4: Green 3: Blue 2: Red 1: Brown Admittedly, I can see the beauty of student/teacher bond behind this belt color system - even the inclusion of the red belt - when examined in context. When you consider this school does not charge a fee for belt tests - think of it this way, "A student gives his or her dedication and loyalty to the school and the instructor. What does it say about the loyalty of instructor who would charge a student for an afternoon of their time once or twice a year?" As for the colors and the need for all those colors. Consider, the student. To him or her, it's a big deal. The student is ready for the next step. Do you want to reward him or her with a piece of tape?

In Germany I know commonly the following system: 9. Kyu: white - in fact that the white belt is normally included, when you buy your Do-Gi, you often get after your examination yellow strips to your belt. 8. Kyu: yellow 7. Kyu: orange 6. Kyu: green 5. Kyu: blue (in other organizations also violett) 4. Kyu: blue (Violett) 3. Kyu: brown 2. Kyu: brown 1. Kyu: brown Sometimes depending on your club, you get coloured stripes of the next level to your belt. But in sum you have to conduct 9 examinations as well. 1. Dan: black

There is pride that goes with achieving those belts. 1/2 the belt test (my experience anyway, don't know if you've had that experience) is just surviving the belt test. Not giving up and not passing out. Well the first 2-3 belts anyway, because you are so inefficient in how you move. I'll never forget the first couple test. YOU GET EXTRA POINTS FOR NOT GIVING UP AND PUSHING YOURSELF. Anyway, all belts of any color deserve respect. white yellow orange green blue purple purple black strip brown white strip brown solid brown black strip black black with various tips red/white etc etc

I earned my 1st Kyu in 1977 according to exactly this 5-grade Kyu hierarchy, applied by the German organization DJB-SeKa, which transformed later into DKU and then-DKV. Well, organized Karate in German enjoyed quite a diverse development since the foundation of rhe first national Karate organization in 1957, true to the old proverb “one German, one association, two Germans = president + treasurer, 3 Germans = 2 associations … etc.. (Japan seems to be not so very different, in Shotokan at least since the demise of Nakayama Masatoshi) Nowadays DKV stipulates 8 Kyu grades. I admit that Shotokan Karate now and then is different in certain aspects, but I hardly see the need for the additional Kyu grades. Might there be a potential relationship between the number of grades and economics, i.e. the justification for more graduation fees? Seems as if many schools on a global scale adhere to this logic …

I’m in a traditional Okinawan Goju school and we have only four belt colors. White, green, brown and black, but with stripes of the next color up to mark progression. For a total of nine kyu ranks.

In the karate dojo I go to the belts are: White, Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Blue-Stripe, Purple, Purple-Stripe, Brown, Brown-Stripe, and Black. The reason for not having a red belt is because once you get to Yellow Belt in a week or so you get a red gi. When you get to brown belt you get a black gi. And when you first start with a white belt you get a white gi until you get a stripe and a yellow belt.
