What is the Chaos Puzzling method?

The beautiful 500-piece "Moth Girl" by illustrator Yas Imamura is the perfect jigsaw puzzle to demonstrate what I call "Chaos Puzzling". (If you're waiting on the 3000-piece Where's Waldo? video - I needed a little more time! Enjoy this lagniappe video while you wait!)

Apparently, I am a chaos puzzler and didn't even know it. I rarely sort unless I have to. I lay everything out face up and start grabbing sections as I see them. I typically do 1000-piece puzzles, but I do have a pretty good-sized table area.

I had no idea I was a chaos puzzler! I don’t have very much space to puzzle so I sort out all of the edge pieces, then sift through the rest of the pieces leftover in the box, working on the most recognizable patterns and colors first. I tried sorting but I didn’t enjoy it not had enough room so I guess I just added a level of challenge to it since I never have enough space to dump the pieces out! (I typically do 1000 piece puzzles btw)

I'm a sorter, not a detailed sorter, but I do like to pull out edges and any major colors or words that I see. I like doing the edges first because I like a contained puzzle!! 😄Then I will work on sections that grab my interest. Once I hit sky/grass/water, I sort by shape. It also takes me longer to do a puzzle as well, but I sort on my bed while I watch tv and move pieces to the puzzle, Otherwise I have many furry helpers! Great video, mad me laugh with your disclaimer in the beginning, and LOVE that puzzle!!!

I HATE sorting so will grudgingly do a quick edge/non-edge sort but that's it. Then it's just a dump everything out and start grabbing pieces that look interesting. I also hate flipping all the pieces up so will turn a handful over and then see if I can put together anything I've grabbed or if I need to go back and flip more pieces. I do need to have a nice clean working area though, so you starting to puzzle in the middle of all the pieces truly was chaotic to me! 😂

I only sort when it’s extremely obvious to me which usually ends up being the edges or one specific color. Chaos puzzling is nice because you get to start on the puzzle and become familiar with it before really digging into it

  • @puzzlephile

    @puzzlephile

That’s a good point about becoming familiar with the puzzle - one thing I hate about doing a big sort is I often don’t know what I’m sorting until I’m halfway through it. Then I’m re-sorting what I’ve already done, or just wishing I had done it differently

I'm more of a search puzzler. I don't sort everything. I pick a distinct section. Search everything that belongs to that, keeping the rest more or less mixed and puzzling the section as I search. So I have two piles of peaces (searched and not searched and my working area). Sometimes I chaos puzzle too. I kind of never sort the whole puzzle. It takes the fun out of searching a piece and finding a different one, that fits elsewhere.

This is how I've always done puzzles.😂 I've only just recently started sorting. I have only 2 time-lapse puzzles on my channel so far and the puzzle I sorted seems to have gotten more views than the chaos (but all flipped) one. I would need to do more research though. Sorting is helpful sometimes, but not sorting is easier(?) for me.

  • @puzzlepiece9509

Hmm, well I guess you could say I'm partly a chaos puzzler. I put all my pieces on trays face up, do the outside and then get puzzling picking out relevant pieces for the part of the image I decide to work on. I haven't really got the space to dump all the pieces out. Probably could do that with 500 or less but certainly not for anything over 500 pieces. I think for most puzzlers the image determines the method used to make the puzzle. Look forward to your next video. 🙂

I hate sorting too, and I almost never sort if I'm doing a 500 piece, but I do sort with anything bigger. I almost never do the edges first!! I hate having to put pieces in an empty box, and often sleeves can catch on the edges when I'm working in the middle. So I'll just work on sections first, and usually those sections might have a few edges in them, then gradually I'm putting it all together much like you did with this one. I use trays a lot because I hate having layers of pieces, I want them all easily visible.

lagniappe... haha. having lived in Louisiana for 35 years I totally didn't notice you'd said that until you started explaining it. As for my method- I'd always been a "full flip" person meaning I put all the pieces out and flip them over face up (and pull out the edges to do first.) Then just look at the pieces and see what sticks out. Pull those pieces out and work on them until that part is done then rinse and repeat. But then I started watching Puzzle KZread and learned about sorting first. Now I do employ sorting, depending on the puzzle. But I really only do 1000 pieces or more so sorting can be helpful when there are distinct areas to sort out. Some images just don't lend themselves to sorting.

First of all, thanks for introducing me to new puzzle brands. I think I have to get this Moth Girl puzzle. 😁 I typically pull out the edge pieces and turn all the remaining pieces face side up first. Then I guess I do chaos puzzling from that point onward, working out of the box (or a larger box I have saved just for that purpose). Like others have said, I don't have a lot of room for sorting, and I tend to prefer lower piece count puzzles at this stage of my life.

Im not a fan of sorting, but always sort the edges. If there are big chunks of colors I will just separate them into piles, but typically I try to just put two face up piles into each side of the puzzle box lids and then the just sift through to find a lot of the most obvious sections. Then as I get into more complicated sections and I have less pieces I will probably have to start to do some sort of sorting that would make sense for the specific puzzle. But this isn't a hard and fast rule for me though.

That’s the exact same way I approach it. I hate sorting with a passion because I am just not patient enough to work my way through big amounts of pieces, so if I sort into too many little categories from the start I’ll just be left unmotivated 3/4 of the way through.

My mother preferentially tries to sort pieces by shape -- I long stopped trying to do that outside the final stage of puzzling, because in a vast majority of cases it maximizes the physical distance between any two pieces that _do_ fit together, which can make them difficult to identify. I also like to say that theoretically, if you can pair up every single piece with an adjacent single piece, then you've functionally reduced the total "piece count" by half.

  • @puzzlephile
