WHAT IS THE CHANEL 22 BAG REALLY MADE OF? Is it even REAL leather? Let's take a closer look...

We're diving even deeper into leather today! In this video I wanted to show you some real-world examples of what different kinds (and qualities) of leather look like up close and personal. What does this mean for the quality and condition of Chanel leather, especially the Chanel 22 bag? Well... I'd love to hear your opinion on that.
04:10 is when the actual leather info starts 😅 I have a bit of a ramble in the beginning.

    I hope you see this🤞I have SO many of your tutorials and have learnt more than I could EVER imagine. I had no idea about the different types of leather & how it’s layered. OH, I seen a pair of LSV (I think that’s the order. I don’t know high end yet) earrings. But going by what you said they were SOOO fake! She had them priced for over $400!! Not what I wanted to ask you about🤣. I received a canvas & leather D&B zip around wallet. When I unzipped it the smell of mold is unexplainable! I have an autoimmune disease, MS so I really need to KILL it. Since it is mostly canvas can I give it a vinegar bath? I have a professional mask available to me. PLEASE HELP

    Same. I used to have a whole list of luxury bags I was saving up for but with all these quality issues now... I figure I can either pay $3k+ for another luxury bag that might fall apart or have flaws out of the box, or I can get 10 equally nice(or nicer) department store bags for the same amount. A couple weeks ago I bought a bucket bag from Portland Leather just for an everyday knock-around bag, and it's absolutely amazing. Total vintage Coach quality.

    "Being an informed consumer" - yes! 100%! Frankly, Chanel could charge £5,000 for a synthetic leather bag, if they wanted to, as long as they were fully honest with the consumer about what has gone into it. This was another fascinating video, thank you! I do enjoy your level of 'leather nerdiness' - such an interesting area, and your passion about it is second to none,.

    Really awesome video!! I loved the idea of using different belts to depict the quality and potential makeup of the Chanel 22. I hate to say it, but I think the bonded is most similar to what we’ve seen from the damage on the 22. As always- so informative and really well planned- great work!!

    When i started buying luxury, i always thought that quality would not be in question. You’re spending a small fortune for these work of arts and they should be made from the finest materials. So far, i have been fairly satisfied with gucci and balenciaga. Been wanting to get something from chanel, but with their absurd prices and lower quality obv its a no go. Doubt that chanel even cares or want my money anyways.

    I wish I had known this information before buying our furniture! My husband and I purchased a “durablend” “leather” set from Ashley’s furniture. It was great for the first few years, and I have no complaints about the cushioning. After awhile though, the coating on the material started to peel away. This was not just little bits here and there-it became SHEETS coming off! We had paid maybe $2500 for the set. We later purchased another set from them (our current set) that is “full grain leather”. We paid twice as much, but I anticipate it lasting at least 5x longer. We’ve had this set now for nearly 2 years, and there’s been hardly any signs of wear. The difference is night and day. When companies are HONEST about the leathers they’re selling, then it’s easier to compare pieces and make a choice to pay more. BUT… Chanel is just phoning it in at this point, and their quality of leathers has clearly gone down the tubes. Not to mention the construction quality. What a disgrace to a once prestigious brand.

    Wow, I’m so sorry to hear about that first furniture set. I’m glad you’re happy with your current one, and I agree that it should last for many, many years. Just like you said, I’m not trying to tell people what to do-I just want to try to help make informed decisions. It would certainly help if some brands (ahem… Chanel) were more transparent.

    As someone who has had many Chanel reissues (12-15) in various metallics and has spent the last 15 years so fixing them, I can say they are coated calf, almost like a sheet of metallic film is hot embossed over the whole hide. Some wear better than others but invariably they all wear on the corners and the edges by the grommets. Some peel terribly (the 2008 tuxedo reissue). I feel the leather they use is all good quality it is just the various coatings they use that cannot stand up to real life. I use Angelus leather paints in all their metallics to fix them, acetone to remove bits that need to be prepared properly and finally super metallic nail varnishes for the final coating to match the rest of the bag. My work is highly variable but I am not spending £7000 or £8000 on a new bag. These bags cost me around £1500 several years ago. Also I am hard on my bags I, use them not baby them. My husband thinks I am mad!

    I am not a huge Channel fan, they are for the most part really pretty, but also very expensive. I have had a few but sold them, they never really lived up to my expectations. My budget on bags is I never spend more than $2000 for a bag, be it used or new. The bags I bought were vintage and unusual and I felt out of date. I did buy a vintage Marc Jacobs bag for $285. A used vintage piece made out of quilted lambskin and gold plated hardware. No CC. It is a beautiful bag and very high quality. The difference in price is astonishing. I can't reasonably spend thousands more for the name. You have done a great job researching the content it is very interesting and only verifies my feelings on the low quality of many over priced luxury and contemporary items. A lot of name brands don't live up to the name anymore. I bet you are glad you were smart enough to buy the high quality pieces you own.

    Great video! I’ve learned so much! Please share more knowledge as you learn and learn more! It’s sad that Chanel would potentially use bonded leather or any poor quality leather and charge way above reasonable pricing is ridiculous! I understand a lot of the price we pay is for the brand, but I also expect that my piece will last throughout the years to pass it on. I would prefer to buy vintage Chanel than current. I wish Chanel would keep their quality and integrity of their construction like the old days. If they want to limit who can buy their pieces then reducing their production and focus on quality and construction would definitely do it.

    Excellent job on this video! I wish more people would take the time to be educated consumers. No judgment about it as I myself have jumped on things without proper research but as costs continue to skyrocket and the average consumer needs to be a bit more discerning with their discretionary income, this is such helpful information. Any remote desire I ever had for a 22 is gone with the wind. I'm now actually wondering what the 19 is composed of? Also, I know there are other brands out there that are more deserving of my attention. I'd enjoy more videos regarding quality with other luxury brands.

I’m curious to hear your opinion about leather from other luxury houses. Do you have any particular favourite leathers from other houses? I unfortunately don’t know Hermès well enough but I’ve always found Dior and Fendi to be very consistent with their high quality leathers - especially lambskin (my personal favourite). Thanks xx

    🧐🧐🧐 I know you‘re focussing mostly on Chanel but I‘d like to hear your thoughts regarding Polene Paris bags since you said full grained leather is expensive yet their bags are at such an affordable price point and are made of full grained leather.

  • @welcherg

    @welcherg

    2 жыл бұрын

    A lot of this probably comes down to the fact that while full grain leather is definitely the most expensive type of leather material, it’s not massively expensive in its own right. I wouldn’t be surprised if even a vintage Chanel bag that sold for thousands only has a few hundred dollars worth of leather in it. Even for companies like Hermès that use the highest quality you can get, the leathers they use can usually be bought on the open market directly from the tanneries for a fraction of the price of any piece from Hermès, with the only major difference seemingly being that the tanneries do have contracts with Hermès so they get exclusive access to only the crème de la crème of the finished hides. When it comes to Polene, I wouldn’t be surprised if there were a couple of factors involved that mostly aren’t about the material, but more so about the lower profit margin, lower labor costs, and likely significantly lower costs for marketing and retail. Having to maintain and staff lots of physical retail spaces like a lot of luxury brands do is certainly not a cheap thing, and Polene meanwhile does most of their selling online (please correct me if I’m wrong on this though).

  • @prepandfab6664

    @prepandfab6664

    @@welcherg yes you are definitely into something with this. I’ve been following some leather tanneries in Italy that I plan to visit just so I can learn more and definitely their prices for full grained leather/ m2 are quite low so it just didn’t make sense to me. Though it’s a well known fact that Chanel has full control of it’s leather supply from tanneries and hence as you said the best quality is assured. I have also purchased 3 pieces from Polene and find the leather to be superb it was a shock how they are able to offer their pieces at that price point though as you mentioned they don’t pay a lot for marketing as they mainly depend on word of mouth and micro-influencers for that as well as having only 1 store in the world that‘s in Paris. They pride themselves on being able to cut off the middleman. Something else I noted after watching her other leather talk videos is that the grain of the textured full grained leather is reminiscent of YSL. It’s not quite like the caviar of Chanel such that it’s raised but it was a great discovery to make.

    it's all about margins. the luxury houses' margins are astronomical. no leather, no matter how high quality, is ultimately so expensive to justify $5-$10k or even a $2k price tag. we're not paying for the leather.

    🧐 I posted a paraphrased version of this on your last video, in a much longer comment: I saw an article last month, out of Vogue HK by Ingrid Chua, where she breaks down the types of leathers produced by most tanneries used by luxury houses, and from those descriptions, I had thought that maybe Dacob's 22 was made from Split leather. Basically, it's the lowest grade of leather you can get. It can "split" and show the white bottom of the skin, but it is still one step up from bonded leather. What is your take on this? I agree with your conclusions from these pictures, as well.

  • @NatashaEstrada

    @NatashaEstrada

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, I think it's split because a synthetic finish wouldn't be a good use of a full-grain leather it also would give it that soft feel. Lambskin would be the best choice for a full-grain leather for that style of bag but the problem is the side of the bag is too big to cut in one piece from lambskin. So a cowhide or sheepskin split might be an option. Though it looks like Dacobs was cut too close to the belly on one side. I've sewn a lot with leather and buying hides for a project is a strugglebus.

    Thank you for these videos! 🧐Can you talk about both different types of Chanel lambskin as well as lambskin across brands? For example, I see a big difference between the lambskin of my Chanel bag from 2006 (super soft and supple) and my Chanel lambskin bag from 2017 (stiffer, not as supple or buttery). I also have Saint Laurent and Dior lambskin bags that are softer and more buttery than the newer Chanel bag, but not as supple as the 2006 Chanel. Does this indicate a decline in Chanel, or is it just bag-by-bag variations? Thank you! I will have my loupe ready for your next video!

    This was a very informative video. The first time I saw the gouge in the Super Dacob's video, I thought to myself - this looks like bonded leather. Your belt compare/contrast magnification was a smart idea to show fellow consumers. I wonder from a business standpoint, would it make sense to use full grain leather for the construction of the 22 because they would not want to spend on the dyeing/higher quality leather for a bag that may not reach commercial success. So until the sales figures support keeping the bag -use inferior leather (of course if this were verified that it is in fact say bonded leather). What do you think? 🧐

I still don't know what is on top of Brahmin bags. Some kind of printed film or something (it really is like a picture/print)? They advertise as 'genuine leather', which as I understand from what you're saying, cannot be said of bonded leather. But the bag looks like the edges are painted and body has a layer of film or something over it. In the strap at least, where the hole was made, everything below the surface is totally white. Yeah it definitely looks like bonded leather to me. Honestly I’m not surprised at all that Chanel is doing this. Sadly I think due to the construction of the 22 bag, it’s going to wear poorly regardless of what material it’s made of. It could be that they intentionally chose bonded leather with the thicker backing (is it possible that bonded is more flexible?) to give it the extra thickness to keep the shape of a large hobo. It is, however, disingenuous if they are marketing it as a genuine leather piece (I guess that’s assumed, right?) The question is, does Chanel need to explicitly state that or not?

Now they are made to last 10 yrs ( if you are lucky)This is just another example of poor workmanship and why the vintage items were made to last and not disposable like current models . They are not meant to last or worth the cost of repairing so you have to keep replacing them with new ones.

    I don't own any Chanels, tbh I've never even been interested in the brand, but I have been SO invested in this Chanel 22 drama lol. Unbelievable that people are getting crappy bonded leather for what, $5000? People like to make fun of luxury buyers, saying you're just paying for the name and a year ago I would have argued with that, but sadly it's starting to become true. Prices are going up while quality is going down. I have one new LV bag(well, 5 months old now) and a vintage Chantilly from '87 and while I love them both, the new one is definitely NOT worth what I paid. It feels really thin and flimsy, and even though I baby it and clean it after every few uses the leather is showing some wear and discoloration already. I'd try to exchange it but the next one would probably do the same thing, plus I had to pick through every piece the store had to find one with proper alignment to begin with. The vintage is so much more well made- the canvas is much thicker, perfect alignment, sturdy leather whose only flaws are from 35 years of use. I feel like it's going to outlive the new one.

    It has to be bonded leather, or some other artificial proprietary coating. Dacob's bag had a gouge that looked hella deep. Hard to say but looks to be 1-2mm deep. I don't think there's any other explanation. Could it be an experimental material? I've had cheap fake leather bags in the past, some actually lasted many years. So even if its bonded I'd expect it to be more durable than the 22. Seems like the coating they used is not adhering to the base like oil and water. They should recall the bags.

    Yes, I think that even regardless of what the bag is actually made of, there’s a huge problem with the painting process they used. I really wonder what Chanel is going to do. I’m hoping that if enough people do bring in their bags with quality issues, something will happen.
