K2 sounds fuller and natural. It has solid outputs. Only some people can understand this fact. It will fit best in the mix.

Her vocal pitch starts "low" on the K2, and rises every take with the next up mic. No one noticed/mentioned. Makes a HUGE difference on a recording if the singer sings more in her or his vocal comfortzone (or even a little higher). ..My no. 1 choice in this tube mic shootout, ..the K2: Round and thick sounding, like a tube should in my opinion. Se and Warm Audio more bright/sibilant (more like condensor mic's) and some obvious plosives. No, I don't own a K2.

Hi Brad and Meg, thank you for this review. I have just bought the SE Z5600ii after considering the Rode K2 as well. The vocal test really helped. I had also looked on Audio Test Kitchen which is a great site, but found easier to hear the difference with Meg singing - part of the problem with comparing mics is how different mics favour different voices. As an aside, part of reason why I was considering the K2, was how it sounded on the drums/kick drum in particular on audio test kitchen. Regards Paul

the K2 is definitely cleaner but this can be a good thing for some tastes and applications, and you can give it more character swapping out the tube and driving a vintage preamp. it still has the smoother top end of a tube mic, so i don’t agree the “might as well be a regular condenser” comment.

The WA-47 had a big proximity boom on the p in champagne and colors the sound way too much. The Rode was by far the most transparent and clean. What is described as "clinical" is known to audio engineers as superior.

I've only had the cheapo seX1 mic from SE. And somehow it made me think like SE is a little "meh" perhaps. But in this comparison the SE wins hands down. It gave the recording way more energy, felt a lot more vivid. And here i've just been a Rode fanboy all this time. I'd love to hear it through an API 512c pre. Gotta be a pretty sweet combo i think.

Z5600 as an allrounder. WA47 if I had the budget to also get a second vocal mic especially for that super sensitive beefy bedroom stuff (think "I'm Your Man" by Leonard Cohen). Or just extra beef, period. The K2, as you mentioned, doesn't really fit in with the other two as a tube mic. Just too thin. Thanks for a great video. Would be nice to hear mics on different sources also. And YES, ribbons of course!!! Loving the atmosphere in the room btw, it feels so natural and relaxed. I could watch this over and over. But I won't. Gotta scan YT for ribbon comparisons now ;)

@@Neil-Aspinall anyone will hear the difference between an sm58 and let's say a u87. I will gladly use an sm58 when performing live because of it's ruggedness. you can throw these things in a glass of beer and they still work. however, for recording vocals outside of a live situation the sm58 just isn't optimal, and people will hear that. it's way harder to make vocals recorded on an sm58 cut through a mix than vocals recorded on a u87. you will have to use so much processing that it will destroy the sound of the voice, and then it still sounds like it's recorded through a tube. it doesn't have the crispness people are used to these days. don't get me wrong, the sm58 is a great mic and I use sm57s all the time on drums and guitars and I also don't think any amateur would need a 1k dollar microphone.
