My favorite of the tenors you have played to far! The sound is so warm yet still full of detail. I went through all of the videos comparing them side by side. This is the one I liked the most. My favorite sax is my own bari 😊 It is a 'no name' Taiwanese model, but it plays so smooth and easy compared to my first vintage one. I luv it.

If you are a saxophonist, you may go for a very expensive horn with lots of modern features. However, as a jazz musician, you will look for the unique and distinguish sound that you want and people could recognise that.

I saw Jerry Bergonzi in the UK recently playing this sax. His tone is fat and dark (maybe a little too dark for my taste) playing the horn with his signature Drake mouthpiece. Without question, he's an impressive player of the highest level. I was so impressed, I decided to check out one of his mouthpieces in a 7*, which is now my main set-up on my Referece 36 tenor.

I’ve tried the OW Lineage raw brass a couple of times when I’ve toured the UK and I must say that it’s the best modern horn I’ve ever tried (and I’ve almost tried them all). I now play a SBA and I’ve also got a Conn New Wonder I and just before I tried the OW Lineage I tried a Radio Improved and I must say that the sound reminds me of the old Selmer (Radio Improved etc) and Conn. Combined with modern keywork it’s a really great horn.

I’m really loving these sax reviews and comparisons. I would like to hear more about the octave mechanisms on the neck of this horn. When is the pip under the neck opened? Watching the video, I could not see it open. One thing you haven’t discussed about any of the horns is serviceability. I think that would be much more of an issue with this horn since it is so different than other horns and few technicians have ever had an opportunity to work on them. I wonder if technicians would be uncomfortable working on this horn and if parts are readily available. Lastly as best I remember, the sound reminded me of the SBA in another video, it would be nice to hear them compared together. I still like the smoothness of the Yanagisawa the best I think.

😻😻 this seems to be a killer horn thanks for bringing it to our intention. Yanigisawa has been my favorite modern horn for a bit now but their sound is exactly as you described... pre defined, which is why I went back to vintage Selmer (and martin). This horn seems to have a bit more versatility. The horn looks like a game changer in the modern market. The one piece bell and bow is exciting. I really like the idea of improved side keys and it is about time some arched the palm keys. It looked liked the bis key is convex... if so bravo. Love the wire key gaurds.. and that engraving is sexy. As a side I cant remember where but have seen this neck design before... thought is was a good idea then and still do.

That saxophone sounds to me like its free blowing and resonant and the sound reminds me a bit of a mix of the resonance of the TJ Custom RAW the edge and brightness of the Yamaha 82z and the rich sound of the 9932 Yanagisawa you tested but with a big broad sound. A bit too bright sounding for me though. Its great to see innovations and changes like this in a new saxophone more than just refinements to metals used, the neck and body bore shape, key angle and shape etc... While those things are probably the most important I have always liked the old vintage saxophones as many had their own unique design features that were different than other saxophones had and you don't normally see that anymore.

Great comment there - actually there was a lot of "new features" on those vintage horns wheras a lot of modern horns are all based on the same design, so are very "samey". It has a different sort of sound than when I hear you playing your Yamaha tenor sax ... Either that or it's the mic you are playing into? Usually I can't tell the difference in sounds of various horns but on this one, it seem very noticeable .... I really can't' afford to buy a new sax, so I'll stay with my Selmer MK VI for the time being ... 9k is a little on the steep side for me ... Just heard your demo at 15 minutes and all I can say is .... Wow ! and Wow ... Seems like it is very free blowing, bright and mellow on different songs ...

Yes, it's very expensive, but if you were thinking of a Selmer only a little more so. The only less expensive options I can think of that might be able to do.it all as you need are the Ishimori Woodstoñe Tenor which they sell at Dawkes, and the Yamaha 875EX which has more depth and is more versatile than the very bright 82z. Enjoy your search which is both educational and entertaining thus far

Geneva appears to be a new owner of Amati, from Czech(oslovakia). It is an old European manufacturer of music instruments. The factory has capability to build anything, but in the past, in Austro-Hungarian fashion (it was the centre of the music world & music education), they produced reasonably priced instruments for bands and budding musicians. My band had a supply of their instruments. I played a pre-WW2 grenadilla clarinet from Amati, a superb instrument that literally turned heads. This saxophone reminds of hand tuned Morgan cars. In keywork, design elements, the posts, approach to tone, it incorporates ideas from advanced clarinet design. Like the clarinet, it appears it must "warm up" to overcome the environment and sound its best. Pure copper neck acts like wood on clarinet, adds needed warmth but it expands and contracts and reacts to environment quickly. If the environment temperature is not right, the tone and perhaps the intonation may suffer. Rapid condensation in cold studios, or outside, is guaranteed, which is why the neck octave key mechanism had to be redesigned to combat with. With plastic Legere reed, that does not absorb/minimise humidity, it will condensate more. The sound is good, unique. Versatile instrument? I don't think it is ready for all seasons and sessions, esp in uncontrollable environments and for serious work without enough preparation (warm up). Instruments w/ bare metal elements are temperamental, they react to environment and can't be fully controlled. I think lacquered Ref36 and 82Z are better for versatility in different situations.

RS Berkeley saxophone are student horns. Even their top of the range tenor has a weak mid and asthmatic bottom, sounds like an alto. RS Berkeley, and many micro brands that produce stuff in China, that occupied market in the last decade, have one major issue: they have no legacy of sound, but are faking it. A serious saxophonist does not buy into a new copycat brand that has no legacy of sound, but is there to make quick bucks by imitating long-standing holders of legacy, or deliver something odd and weird "just to be different".

  • @harolddawson2033

@@zvonimirtosic6171 the problem now is that most modern saxophones are now manufactured in China now. Even the top brands like Selmer and even Yamaha. Its kind of hard to stay away from a Chinese made horn nowadays. But some manufacturers are getting good at it. I am not sure how true this statement is (because I am still learning obviously. But I have heard the closest thing to a mark 6 is the Yamaha 82z and the Rs Berkeley Virtuoso based on my research)

  • @zvonimirtosic6171

@@harolddawson2033 Manufacturing ability of China comes from the expertise in making millions of screws, components and metal alloys for other industries, but a few smart arses found that they could rip off the intellectual property and solutions of hard working established manufacturers of instruments, and offer "cheaper alternatives". Through reverse engineering. One cannot reverse engineer the sound, but that is, unfortunately, exactly what they try to do in order to sell their instruments. They also price them so to create an illusion of "something new" and apparently "decently made", then steal potential customers from Selmer, Yamaha, etc. through the illusion of "something new". But what they sell is a rip-off of something already established. Selmer, Yamaha, etc. all worked hard to create legacy of sound we measure music with, and these rip-offs come to steal it. Selmer, Yamaha etc. work under different laws, must pay higher taxes, higher wages to their workers, worker's holidays, healthcare, worker's comp, maintain sales and repair network etc. When you see the correct picture, you see Chinese made instruments with "romantic" names (that steal the heritage of sound) are are pure rip-off - they are not cheaper at all. They have done NOTHING to create and nurture the legacy of sound, but want your money. When one factory can produce a hundred of different things, from high-pressure pots to saxophones, they don't need to employ top-level musicians, engineers and experts. If the instrument sales do no go well, tomorrow they will be gone and produce brass cutlery. But Selmer won't do and can't do that. There is a huge difference between them, a hidden picture, and we should try to see it and act correctly. Regarding your new instrument, you can't go wrong with Yamaha 62 tenor, and possibly with a V1 type of neck, and a fine mouthpiece after a year or two of practice. Slant Sig from Theo Wanne, that Mr McGill used, is a very fine mouthpiece.
