    Sorry man, youve totally missed the boarding sword or what is basically a machete with hand guard, it was issued to sailors in its thousands as it is such a versatile and simple weapon, it was the AK of the Napoleonic wars.

    @@tommothedog which was a direct descendant of the Falchion (spellings vary by country) which was a heavier blade version of what we call the machete. Basically a militarized farm tool. Although I would argue the humble hand axe is the universal sidearm as all but the very richest in society would use an hand axe almost daily.

    Falchions are very thin and razor sharp, if you treat them like a cudgel you're not getting through anything. @@Baconator5642 I still prefer the AK because in a battlefield context (as was the premise of this short) it’s more versatile than the shotgun. It has a far bigger magazine, a longer effective range, and still has massive amounts of short range firepower when set to full auto. All of what I said does apply to any other assault rifle or post WW2 battle rifle. And just to cover a base lots of people seem to forget when dealing with assault rifles, beyond 5-10 meters you’re supposed to use it on semiautomatic , full auto is meant for CQB situations like building and trench clearing only. On semi-auto, and AR or BR has less average recoil than a shotgun (assuming it’s using at least 00 buckshot) as well as faster followup shots. On a different note, my favorite Cold War BR is the G3.

    There is a reason why spears and pikes made it all the way from antiquity to the gunpowder era. “He who can poke the furthest wins.” If you are in a formation and can poke the other guys more and without breaking your own formation you win the melee. It really was just that guns go so good that not having every man carrying one meant you couldn’t poke your enemy far enough. So the gun became the spear with a bayonet for after the long range poking was over. Then eventually guns got even better to the point were you hope you never actually get into stabbing range. “The poke is the master of death and destroyer of man.”

    See here's the thing- swords became cheaper after the Black Death between a bunch of people with swords dying of plague and the introduction of Toledo steel making them easier to make. Falchions would be a bit more forgiving of poor technique than a lot of other swords. Imo the best for novices is a leaf bladed sword of some form. Any slashes naturally go to the sweet spot, which makes them really forgiving of poor technique, and is a solid weapon all around. Downside is it's harder to maintain

If they lived near a commons forest, or ranged the hunting grounds for their lord, they could be expected to know how to hunt, but that was not nearly everyone. (3) The English were the exception to this-England and Wales were renowned for their warbow archers because the Kingdom ACTIVELY ENCOURAGED Peasants to train the warbow, but not for hunting, for SPORT. I feel the best option would actually be the aztec sword you just need to graze the opponent to leave sharp cuts that may or may not contain obsidian shards. Besides this it is still a decent hunk of wood that would hurt to get hit with.

    Probably another reason was that peasants often used tools that were long wooden sticks with a sharp, pointy, or otherwise dangerous bit on the far end of it, so spears are just a natural military extension of that. Flails, pitchforks, turning forks (not sure of the English name, basically a pitchfork with different number of teeth), scythes, etc. were common peasent tools, and they knew how to wield them. A long stick with a sharp metal pointy bit at the end handles much the same, but is more dangerous and long-lasting and has a better range.🤷👍

    I would have figured the gladius would be an easy answer. It can hack, and it can stab, neither of which is all that complicated to learn. Plus, it's short enough that you can use it in close quarters without much issue. With good, modern steel, its short chunky frame also makes it highly durable compared to a longer, more slender blade. In terms of its usage, it's as close to a spear as you can get and still be a sword. Hand it to someone, say "hold this end and stick 'em with that one" and all that's left is a bit of drilling and they're good.

  • @Ligierthegreensun
    @Ligierthegreensun11 ай бұрын

    Gladius and scutum. One of the many reasons why Rome had seemingly endless ability to fight wars even after was how simplistic but effective their fighting style was after the phalanx era. They trained to fight in close ranks, throw javelins when the enemy was at a distance, turtle with the shield to withstand enemy attacks and then quickly make a stab, twist and pull and return to turtle. They’d bash the enemy with the boss of the shield or physically push back but generally their fighting was brutally effective and simple. This allowed new recruits to be trained relatively quickly. The fact that they carried all their equipment after the Marian reforms and marched long distances conditioned them extremely well, making this machine like formation even more brutal when hours and hours of fighting wouldn’t tire them, but would tire their enemy.

    I mean, swords weren't nearly as uncommon as most people tend to think they were throughout the ages. For example, in 1328 the Statute of Northampton banned the wearing and use of swords and daggers without explicit royal permission because they were so prolific. Similar laws in medieval France are on record to have existed as early as the 12th century. For the most part, hunting swords, or other single-edged swords like falchions, would likely be the most peasant or untrained-friendly blades of that period. Large, heavy swords that can inflict devastating wounds with cuts are easy and simple to use for just about anybody. Clubs and schools for common burghers or merchants founded by mercenaries or accomplish swordsmen are recored to have existed as early as the 10th century (the plethora of German and Italian treatises prove this).

    Which was why the bow was the more favored out of most weapons apart from most farming equipment, since bows and slings were low to produce and training wasn’t highly needed, but an effective army would train diligently with such a weapon, from the small yet powerful curved bows of the Mongolian empire, allowing for rapid mobility as well as firepower, vs the much heavier and more armor punching British longbows to the large and powerful yet fairly light yumi bow of Japan, vs the French crossbows which were expensive and hard to produce but was easier to operate as well as train with, outside of the incredibly heavy draw weight
