What is the Best Sounding Version of The Dark Side of the Moon By Pink Floyd?

Музыка

Today I compare six different pressings (including a MoFi pressing from ‘79 and the 30th, 40th, and 50th anniversary pressings) to determine what I think is the best sounding version of Pink Floyd's classic album The Dark Side of the Moon.

You think the 50th (which is cut from digital files) beats the 30th which was cut (for the very last time) from the 1st Gen Analogue Master Tape? I can't get behind your thoughts on this. The 30th is AAA....I just don't get what you're saying.

Your video prompted a full immersion with quality headphones and my blue ortofon into all the versions I have (including one first UK, AAA 2003, 2011, 2016, 2023). Well, well... Well... It all boils down to details since all of them sound good. That said...Best overall version: 2016 (bottom range is fine and highs are less harsh than the first release). I know, I know... It is not fully analog but... Who cares? It sounds so good! 2023 remix... Not bad but, how to say ... Tamed... Very likely at the bottom of my list together with the 2011 version.

While I've long had an old beater / placeholder Canadian copy of DSotM, coincidentally, my local shop who grades quite well has a NM 2016 copy that I picked up for $18; just over $20 CAD tax-in. so I was happy to upgrade at the price. The timing of this helped lead me to enjoy your DSotM shoot-out all the more. Coincidentally, I also listened to the Animals 2018 mix for the first time in a while since acquiring it last year and it was awesome! I don't have the attachment that some PF die-hards have to the original mix. I'm all about the stereo spectrum clarity. Newer isn't always better, but in this case, it's at least 'different' and very pleasing to my ears. I have no regrets about selling all of my CD's (with the exception of my Jeff Buckley CD's and extensive bootlegs and a few others), but one might be unloading my PF prism CD box set. I don't lose sleep over it though. Thanks for the video!

I’ve got a 1973 cut of the album (3rd, 4th or 5th repress/reissue, not too sure which). It’s an English pressing. I got it in 1974 when I was 14 years old and I still have it today. It’s certainly got some crackles on it now but not too many. They don’t come through very loud on my speakers when I turn up the volume. I’ve also got the 2016 pressing. Both are excellent sounding records. There was a time when I thought I preferred the 2016 record but I changed my mind on that one. Then changed it back again, a couple of times over….. They’re both really good records. With a gun to my head, if I had to, I suppose I’d go for the 1973 record first up. But that would be more of a sentimental choice rather than scientific…..

i think the record was recognised as a master piece when released 52 years ago or maybe 53, it sure sounded very good, the later versions i never heard them but i think i had a talk with a friend of mine who owns a music store and sales cd ,also mainly because more likeable titles from the past and alternative labels bands that in the 80´s meaned diferent production from the mainstream music unless you like modern talking, wham, spandau ballet or even Duran Duran that were a boy´s band like the Beatles were(they played very good their instuments not refering to their body grown appendicies )or today maybe you ain´t got aceptable sounding turntable to what i´ve heard and tested in my friends music store a 90´s box with a cd inside, so this new with BLA BLA BLA work and re-re-re-re-remasterized from the converted digital files, it´s even an ofense to say that is better because if it wasn´t for their first edition with quality above average and hard work from their famous producer ,today you would be listening not to pink floyd ,they would never had the liberty to record albums like ,Animals or The wall ,there is a simple test to know if you have a turntable with minimum quality to play a record or vinyl disc as called today. 1st you put the cd player with good sound ready to run with a recent dozens of times remasterized digital version of this album and then you play the record sorry vinyl in your modern turntable with modern cartridges and after that if the cd playing sounds not even hi-fi but low-fi means that your turntable is a aceptable one ,but if you only heard records, again sorry ,Vinyl only after this new wave of expensive turntables and cartridges with strange litle stylus maybe the cd will sound better ,and they say things like in hi-fi world have evolved that in reality most of the known brands in 1980 decreased a lot the quality of their components ,the reason why when cds appeared one would notice that when recorded to a cassette in a average deck it would sound incredible good compared to the cd just bought, this because a klot of people in this world had amplifiers or receivers and turntables with above average quality because they were bought before 1979 ,when all went down and a 300 like you say "bucks for a copy of the dark side of themoon when in early 70´s there was a better one and turntables even the cheapest ones had the sound of a...let´s say Pro-Ject turntable and a good cartridge and stylus would cost 14.000€ ,i´ve made the test with several new or recent turntables and a lot of cartridges, you better writte to the surviving menbers of Pink floyd that you can teatch them how to make a record sound good but how did you get it if the first version was so bad,and i being a hi-fi colector recentelly bought cheap components to see how kids this days hear the records buy having a P10 bought last year with a Ortofon Quintet Black S (funny name) a new technics receiver and some new JBL speakers around only 3.500€, the funny think is that in overpriced Ebay after and including 2017 with 400€ i can have the same quality, just need to know what i am buying, this box is stealing from the people. But what do i know, i used to listen to records in a old and dull system between 45 to 53 years old today, and a new at the time P3 turntable sold by pioneer exclusive series, a pair of old and big exclusive 2401twin speakers and a control amplifier a C3 ,so old that at the time they had not started to call it pre-amplifier and not stereo but two mono blocks from the same exclusive series, the M6´s, at the time i didn´t had yet a cassette deck but a tascam 4-track recorder who played and record also music in stereo and had bought a very expensive cartridge for my at the time turntable from a brand that some know it existed at the time called Shure for an amzing amount of what today is 20€ ,but today what´s old is bad so what am i gonna say i didn´t even had a separated pre-amplifier from this very old control amplifier , so each to his own, as i prefer to listen to that bad sounding record released in 1972 or 3 ,what do i know, Really(sorry for my bad english, it´s not my first language)

Dark side is a special album to me. It takes me back to my senior year in high-school 1973 when I got to see Pink Floyd on the dark side tour. It was the best concert I ever attended. The only concert that came close to this show was when I saw Melanie safka live in Atlanta 1970 on her Candles in the rain tour. Thanks for this review, I really appreciate it.

That's the thing that drives me crazy about Pink Floyd. When the 50th anniversary was released, the only way to get it was in the box set. It wasn't until late last year that it was available outside of the box set. Looking back, the recently released clear version should have been the one included in the box set and the black pressing should have always been the stand-alone release, but in typical Pink Floyd fashion they need to milk fans for every last penny.

Sorry but I am not agreeing with your opinion. I have 8 different versions of Dark Side and the best sounding is original UK, US and Australian LPs. The 50s anniversary is the worth sounding. remaster. They kill 3D stage with voice detail, the stereo effect for each track is different and weird. The 2016 is already bad sounding album but 2023 remaster is terrible. I won't even pay $20 for it. From the new release the 2012 is good but you can find some earliest releases from Canada or Austria they sound good too.

I'm really sorry but paying $300 bucks for a rehashed version of Pink Floyd's dark side of the Moon???? Really I bought my first copy the day it was released on March 9th 1973 local record place called 1812 overture and it came out just after Pink Floyd began their 1973 dark side of the Moon tour which was the case for most bands back then they would release the album either a few days before the tour began in the US or just after the tour began in the United States . I've listened to this album so many times I've burned through 12 copies on vinyl in a matter of 10 years before I started buying my disc CDs in 1982, And I literally cannot tell the difference between most of the recorded releases except for one exception to that rule and that is the Japanese release of dark side of the Moon on what's called superdisc blues spec CDs only produced in Japan on more than four different labels the reason for this is the Japan has no copyright laws you can take whatever recording you want from wherever it came from whether it's live or whatever and slapping on the disk or vinyl and sell it as you choose. and the one thing I enjoyed most about dark side of the Moon and matching it with film was when the Japanese finally released The wizard of Oz with dark side of the moon as the soundtrack for the film because it matched the move into the film so very very well and the really wild thing about it is that some claim that Pink Floyd has been watching The wizard of Oz and decided to match dark side of the Moon with the wizard of Oz way back in 1974 about a year after dark side of the Moon is released and the earliest copy I could find released anywhere on the planet for this mixture was released on VHS in 1982.. The music industry is such a strange and wonderfully eclectic world of sound and there are so many recordings out there of dark side of the Moon that no one has ever heard and only released to people in the know.. are those an FM radio or working for a particular record label who are most well-liked by everyone around them in these releases are very rare very hard to get ahold of and very seldom available anywhere free sale in reality there are 71 different versions of dark side of the Moon released on CDsince 1983 whether it be private mixes or public mixes or mixes that were exclusively distributed to the very special crowds who either work or are connected to CBS Columbia records for the harvest label in those who worked or spent much time at Abbey road studios before during and after the Master recording of dark side of the Moon and those releases were in very limited quantity maybe 20 or 30 copies and only given to those who were ubiquitously around during that time in studio always., though my favorite released recording for dark side of the moon was done in 1986 actually and only released in Japan on CD and only $150,000 copies went into print and then it disappeared.. Never to be reprinted as far as I know the recording that was remixed remastered for that 1986 very short release was done in quadraphonic 4-channel sound mix and I had the chance to hear it and touch the disc and hold it in my hand about 4 years ago and it is eclectically beautiful particularly for a little tune called any colour as well as the helicopter crash sequence and that wonderfulrelease so those who collect dark side of the Moon by Pink Floyd in any format available must search these out and protect them from being lost to history any one of the public releases of dark side of the Moon and mixes the virtually hundreds and hundreds of thousands of copies printed and released it will never be lost but those pieces that I mentioned in this comment must be found and kept safe. Because regrettably some of these eclectic remixes that were in very short supply were released on wax test pressings which meant the more you played it the worst the quality of the sound only because of the nature of the material that was used to print the platter itself., so sit back relax fire up a fat boy and listen

Like I said in the video, the 50th anniversary box set is wildly overpriced. Now that the 50th anniversary pressing is available as a standalone release (for around $30), IMO it's the best available option for cost and sound quality. As you mentioned, there isn't a huge difference between most of the DSOTM pressings, so it's hard for most people to justify paying $200+ for a pressing that doesn't sound much different than a $30 pressing.

@@TheVinylDen no I can appreciate that very much but for me it's all about the stuff that's not been released and very few people have never heard such as allwood called the of the album which I truly love and I do appreciate the fact that it's standalone now for 30 bucks but.. what should we talked about all that information in eclectic works that are around the frame of the the album such as all the practice sessions all everything having to do with the album other than the album itself that's what's what is the most important to be honest about

I can't understand why this album is so popular. Breath, Time, Us & Them, Brain Damage and Eclipse are just typical early 70s soft rock with pretentious lyrics and sound effects added. Money is an attempt at funk, On the Run is just an early 70s synthesizer on a monotonous loop, and Any Colour You Like is just Gilmours phaser pedal at max speed doing some loose improvising. And the Great Gig in The Sky isn't really Pink Floyd at all, it's a session singer doing he own thing. The whole album is essentially a polished soft rock sellout compared to their more experimental years. And don't play the old and misguided "you have to be high to best appreciate Floyd" card on this. Looking at wallpaper is trippier when you're high.

@@flyurwayIf you mean 45 million album sales, that means nothing because it assumes that every single person who bought the album liked it. Most people buy some albums out of curiosity. There are some albums that are famous purely because of their high record sales. Michael Jacksons Thriller for example. I have bought albums such as Thriller, Beach Boys Pet Sounds Jethro Tull's Aqualung, Nirvana etc because I want to hear what the hype is about. I didn't like Thriller at all. Pet Sounds has a few good songs, but a lot I didn't care for. And so on. Just about everyone has heard of Dark Side of The Moon, so a lot of people will buy it out of curiosity. And because so many people buy out of curiosity, that in turn means more album sales and ever replenishing curiosity about what it sounds like.

@@user-qb1sm3rk9r What you claim is not without merit, however, 45 million is still 45 million, it does not "mean nothing"! Whether you like the album or not IS your business, but there are few albums over the last 50 years that can compare in popularity. Safe bet would be that there are far more people that like it than not.

True story - My favorite version used to be the old US pressing that I bought used with beer stains on the cover, weed all through the spine, and some naked polaroids of a wonderfully hairy hippie chick stuffed in past the lp sleeve. The lp and the original poster are in perfect shape though. Then I got the MOFI version and even though it doesn't have all of the accoutrements, it sounds amazing. So, I'll vote for the MOFI.
