We need to teach hunting ethics foremost, I would not even propagate over 400 yard shots to the majority of hunters.

Judging by the public range shooting performances I see in Alaska, I wouldn't recommend over 100 yards for dang near half of "hunters".

As an amatuer hunter from South Africa - for myself - I consider the following as my idea on hunting ranges (and ethical hunting behaviour) : 100 meters = Home 200 meters = A good distance, nice shot well done! 300 meters = let's try and get closer

My take away was velocity matters and I appreciated your remark about "sensible hunting distances". All of my rifles have the potential to be lethal at great distances, however, I like the challenge of actually hunting. Your comments about the meat yield and having shrapnel in your dinner cracked me up. Everybody who hunts should watch this video because you really packed a bunch of good, usable advice in it! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience! Great video!

Excellent review! I live and hunt in Alaska. For 30 years I reloaded Nozler partitions, and for the past decade I've reloaded TTSX exclusively for hunting. Never had a problem....130 gr TTSX in .270 for Sitka blacktails, Dall sheep, black bear, caribou. 180 gr TTSX for moose and grizzly bears. I like the big exit holes TTSX typically creates, especially for blood tracking bears. I usually reload and shoot about 10-20 TTSX each week...at $30 per box of 50 the price is not bad either. I am not a long-range hunter, almost all my kills have been less than 200 yards...

Great comment. I switched to monolithics about 10 years ago. Killed cow/calf elk, doe/buck pronghorn, pigs, and buck mule deer with them, probably approaching 30 animals at this point, from about 15 yards at nearest and 325 yards at farthest, with most under 200. I’ve killed with 5.56 70g TSX, 270win 130g TTSX and 150g TSX, 30-06 150g GMX, and 270wsm 140g TSX. My only failures have been operator error, with only very limited blood trailing required. I take only heart/lung shots and most times the animals don’t know they’ve been hit and am able to watch them fall. I have other monolithics in 308, 6.5 CM, and 30-06 that I’m anxious to try on game.

I second this. 180 grain TTSX in 300 win mag doesn't over expand close and it penetrates well in heavy game to 500yds based on my experience taking deer, elk, moose, and grizz over the last 5 years.

I tell people to match the bullet to the game and the expected range.My friend went to Africa and talked to the PH before departure. PH told him average range 90 yds. He was after Kudu plus other plains game. Took his Ruger .458 Lott and Speer 350 Mag Tip. One shot kills on all game and he showed me a couple of perfect mushrooms. Everything you pointed out in your video is true. Shooting long range at varments and targets is fine but I draw the line on big game. Leave the 1000 yds at range targets. I have a nice collection of Noslers and Core Loks over the years. I truly have a high opinion of Barnes. Haven't found one in a animal yet. They penetrate deep and open up like a broad head. Thanks

The 30-30 is way under rated. It just don't fit the mold of a vanity rifle but they sure do get the job done inside 200 yards.

I agree about high velocity and Barnes bullets. They NEED velocity to perform as intended. They'll still kill at slower speeds, but with pencil type holes and not much shock. I recently witnessed my buddy shoot a whitetail with a 308, 130 grain TTSX (at 3100 fps I might add) knock a deer over dead in its tracks at 100 yards. It was a high shoulder shot that shocked the spine and clipped the top of the lungs. It had as little meat damage as any deer I've skinned in several years. I'm already a Barnes guy, but this just made me realize how little bc and sectional density matter inside 300 yards with these. Select light for caliber bullets and push them well above 3000 fps and watch them fall in the scope without putting lead fragments in your meat.

Thank you for your real-world knowledge. I used to live in Alaska 7 years in the 90s and did lots of hunting. I was a die-hard nosler partition hunter mostly because that was the go to bullet in Alaska at the time. I have heard good things about Barnes and Swift. I don't really get to caught up in BC because I hunt with aperture sights inside 300 yards so not really necessary for me. Sounds like my go to partition nosler is still great. I plan to be back in the field this fall and Africa in the next few years. Thanks

@@ForestxWalker06 Hi, I like the E-tips and when Nosler had a sale I bought a bunch for my .223 rem. I like all Nosler products. Some shooters keep floating form every new manufacturer to the next, get excited about magazine writeups, etc.. I have stuck to Nosler for all my hunting and I have done OK. When I was shooting foxes professionally for their skin, I used a Sierra 40 gr SP in the .22 Hornet, had least amount of pelt damage and my buyer always paid me top price. In my .444 I reloaded with 240 gr Sierra! I'm not stuck on Nosler, as I choose what is best for the game, the rifle and the application I have in mind. In my Sako .223, .270 and .308 I always stuck by Nosler Partition for hunting game!

I shot a huge Golden Wildebeest 4 days ago. Carcass weight was 290lbs. I used my 30-06 with 165gr Accubonds at 2850fps at the muzzle. I shot it just behind the shoulder at 270m. The animal ran about 30m and died. Wildebeest are know as the poor man's buffalo because they are so tough. I found the Accubond just below the shoulder on the opposite side. Weight retention was 129gr. I will hunt anything in South Africa except the big 5 with the above mentioned combination. I will never use Berger bullets on game again, poor penetration and massive meat damage. Great channel and analisys!

Berger vld's are junk! Better suited for target than hunting. I made a 85yd frontal shot on a whitetail buck with a .257 Wby and the deer ran to the next county before I cought up and killed it with a broadside shot through the lungs. The Barnes TTSX 100gr has remedied chasing critters into the next time zone!

Always glad to see your videos. Here’s how I see it: the best caliber is a good bullet, and the best bullet is proper shot placement.

Great video. im a big fan of the Nosler Partition myself. Lately though, I have been using the Accubond Long Range. It seems to give great performance. We have not recovered one or lost an animal yet. They also seem to be much more handloader friendly and less finiky than the standard Accubond. But you can NEVER go wrong with a Partition!

My .22-250 with 60 grain Nosler Partitions will drop deer and pigs with authority. Best projectile of the last 50 years.

Great video. I agree with all of your points, and I'm frustrated with the bullet manufacturers attempts to sell nothing but boat tail target bullets to hunters. I've been using Hornady Interlock bullets in my 308 and 30-06 for years with no complaints or problems. I use either the 180 grain round nose or the 165 spire point (never boat tail). The 165 spire point is by far the most accurate bullet out of my 308. These work great at the woods ranges I hunt, perfect expansion and penetration. I've also used Remington Corelokt before i reloaded. Too bad Remington wont sell them as components. The 180 round nose is about as reliable as you can get for close range deer, bear and moose with 308/30-06. Keep up the great work. New subscriber here!

This has to be the best video I have seen in a long time...Very informative. I have been sucked in with these fragmenting bullets..Berger...ELDX..Very Accurate. Shot a cow elk at 450 yds with my 7mm 162 gr ELDX...Dropped in its tracks..Never shot anything really at close range to see the results of under penetration..This year I am going to use my Marlin SBL in the Trapper in timber Going to use the Barnes 400 gr Original..Hope it works well for me...Thanks for a great Video.

Until I got into reloading 7yrs ago I knew very little about the construction and terminal effects of the different types of bullets. For my 300 Win it was Remington Cor Lokt, for my .250 Savage it was 100gr Silver tips, my .257 Wby was 115 gr Berger vld's, my 6.5 Cm likes the 143gr eldx. Now days, it's Barnes all the way. I've never lost a critter since (or before) I discovered Barnes TTSX. The only exception is the 250gr Accubond I use in the 9.3x62, simply devastating on the thick country of N. Idaho. I moved out of California 31yrs ago and am glad I did for obvious reasons. I do miss the pig and blacktail deer hunting and am tempted to return to hunt the hills above Los Banos. It's good to know if I ever did, I would be fully compliant with Barnes TTSX having developed loads for any rifle I choose to use. Thanks again for a very informative video!

I like your take on these subjects. This is a great video for those somewhat new to hunting and are sometimes overwhelmed by all the cartridge choices when buying ammo. Or those that might have grown up with common cup and core bullets and haven't kept up with bullet design and technology. A cartridge I think deserves a mention as a good "all around" hunting cartridge is the Federal Fusion. I'm not sure how they do for magnum calibers but in the middle ground cartridges such as 308 win or 270 (or similar type of rounds), they are very versatile. They expand consistently over a wide range of distances and hold together well.

I have shot most of these bullets and many work very well but would agree with you that the standby Nosler Partition is hands downs dependable.

Excellent break down. I am a big fan of the TTSX in my 300 Win Mag. I make sure my impact velocity is at or above 2K FPS and never had a problem.

Subscribed. I like your common sense takeaways. There was a time when bullet selection was really quite simple. You had the choice of a varmint bullet, a cup and core or a solid. And depending on your quarry you made your choice. Cup and core pretty much ruled the roost with their hard hitting reliable expansion, but the difference between something like a deer bullet and a Bison or Elk bullet simply meant getting a bigger, heavier bullet in a larger caliber with a higher sectional density and a thicker jacket. The solids were reserved for Dangerous game. Frankly I STILL use that system. And guess what, it STILL works! High velocity Magnum rifles are the primary reason that the need for so called "Premium" bullets came about. That's why Partitions got so big, because they were immune to Magnum velocity driven failure but with the same positive aspects of a SP. But what a lot of folks don't seem to realize is that a bigger, heavier cup and core slug could solve most of that problem too. Even if people prefer to use "premium" bullets, they can still benefit from understanding the old method of bullet selection and how it worked.

My old go to for penetration and expansion was partition. I came across Lapua Mega because I am a 6.5 fan and never looked back. Load in 6.5, 308 and 3006. Awesome stuff there

Good video. Too many bullet are to attract the customers not effectively kill animals. Partetions, core lokts and Hot Cores get it done! I like your comments about stalking within 300 yards to get a shot. That’s what hunting is about to me.

Great video. Nice to see someone talking sense. The amount of B/S talked about match and hunting bullets is amazing. Not to mention the obsession with ballistic co-efficients. They don't seem to realise that b/c's don't even come into effect until around 450 yards. I'm using Hornady eld Match 80 grains for head shooting deer in my 22-250 to great effect. Its fragmentational properties are equal to a vMax. Now i'm looking at a new stalking rifle for deer in .303 British. I will be body shooting at ranges little over 100 yards. So my load development will be looking at Hornady Interlocks at 150 and 174 grain driven at about 2,600.

Been using the Barnes bullets for years with no problems. I dropped down in bullet weights like there manual said to do. 165 gr out of my 300win mag and 150gr out of 06 . Both shoot excellent .

Really good video. 38 now, started to learn at about 6. tested a lot but one that is always in my various ammo is the partition. world class in every way in all calibers ive had or have. the tsx is close after but a bit in front on some hunts. mainly using hornadys bullets because im a reseller of them but for those hunts when I need the little extra.. Nosler Partition all the way.

I've taken more Elk and Deer with the Nosler Partition and the Nosler ballistic tip than anything else. For reloads and price point, and performance the Hornady Interlock is hard to beat. But, the Nicest buck I ever took fell to a 150 grain Barnes X in the mid '90's. Found the bullet on the other side of the deer under the hide. It looked just like the expanded bullet picture on the box. I still have some.

I have harvested a number of elk with a 30-06 and have never found a bullet in one of them. They all pass through, I do avoid shooting into the large bones unless it's the neck.

The best education video in regards to bullets on the net!!!

I started checking out controlled expanding bullets back in the 70s after some mixed results with my first high performance at that time 7mm rem mag. 139 Hornady interlock and 160 sierra game king were the bullets I used the most. Those bullets seamed to do the job but usually left a real mess! Even on a clean lung shot sometimes the blood shot would go way up in between the muscle groups 18 inches away from the impact point. One time A white tail buck had three exit holes! Nosler partitions were much more consistent and when Ross Safried (guns and ammo magazine shooting editor at that time) recommended Barnes x bullets I started loading them.They had some problems with pressures and copper fowling, but they have evolved like everything else!

Viewer from Northern British Columbia: I haven't been hunting near as long as someone such as yourself, or even shot the variety of animals you have, but do have some real world experience in the field. I've tried a few of these new hunting bullets being marketed by Nosler and Hornady, and I have always come back to the Nosler Partition. Your video was spot on, and I quite enjoy your info vids on all things to do with African hunting. I hope to go over there one day. For now I'll keep chasing Canadian Bears, Moose and Elk. Awesome videos man, cheers.

Tevin March yeah we have some good size. I heard that the moose are down in numbers in northern B.C. because of the wolves. Especially around the Telkwa area. After the burns from the last year the moose population will grow in that area I’m suspecting.

You are absolutely correct about hunting at ethical distance. I am just starting to compete in precision rifle, but have been a rifle and bow hunter for decades. Everyone talks about their 600+ yard kills but I always try to get closer. I'm more proud of my 7 yard mule deer kills with a bow than if I took a 1000 yard shot with my rifle, just saying. More skill on my hunting with being up close. Enjoy your videos.

Yep, when people attempt to brag to me about their 600 yard kills, I simply respond "if you need somebody to take you out and show you how to stalk and hunt deer so you can get close enough for an ethical shot, I'll be happy to teach you. My grandfather taught me how to get within 200 yards of any deer when I was 14".

Great comment about shooting gel blocks. How many times I have watched someone and they "test" their bullets by firing from 10-20 yards. Yeah, everything cartridge looks impressive at muzzle velocity. Not many shoot a block at 100 yards and it's almost impossible to see someone hitting a gel block at 200. I would imagine they cannot hit a gel block at that range maybe that's why. They sure don't mind taking shots at deer even further though.........

Another great video. I would guess that because of cost factor the Remington Core-Lokt has killed as much or more small game in North America as any other bullet. Their factory ammo worked fine for me. I like Hornady Interlock and Nosler Partition as well. I had some Interlock come with a press I purchased and they work great.

Glock2201 Yup We used to buy Rem corelokts by the bag in bulk. My favourite was the 165 gr. Accurate reliable. Very reasonable in price Nothing glamorous or sexy about it just Works. I don’t give a shit about ballistic co efficients and plastic tips. I don’t shoot at ridiculous long ranges. I get pissed when l hear guys bragging about their “800 yd kills” 300 yds is a long ways🇨🇦🤠

A flat based hunting bullet will be just as accurate out to 200 m than a boat tail design plus they usually stay together and don’t disintegrate

A Nosler partition or Corelokt style bullet is going to take care of 99.9 percent of game in whitetail country on the east coast. Nosler partition's are great for black bear, hogs and if you get lucky to draw an elk tag through the lottery system. Most your shots are within 80 yards with the rare and occasional field shot out to 300+ yards or so.

There is a big difference between Nosler partition and the corelokt. The partition is a bonded bullet made to retain a high percentage of mass for deep penetration. Corelokt are designed to fragment and will have a difficult time to break through a shoulder.

I'm a Nosler fan. If I could only have 1 bullet for all my hunting needs it would be Partition. I also like Federal Edge TLR. 165g Partition and 175g Edge TLR will always be my go too bullets

Accubond is my favorite to load and hunt with.

Converted in the mid 80's. Only bullet that has grabbed my attention for this application since has been Barnes. Going to give Barnes a try in 22-250, now that I've exhaust my 60 grain partitions. 75 year reign is damn impressive. Not the best bullet to learn how to track. 😂

Great video sir i appreciate you always telling it like it is. I work on a sport fishing boat and quite often see anglers come out with there custom wrapped rods high dollar reels roughly a $1,000 setup and skimp on a 5 cent hook only to lose the fish and I can’t help but wonder WHY??

I recently shot a Red Stagg in the shoulder from 50 yards with a 300 win mag. I used Barnes TTSX 168 grain. Thanks to this, the bullet did not explode and did its job, falling less than 20 yards from the place.

As a western game hunter, nosler is king. Love the accubond lr is my 18 inch ar10 and the partitions in my 30-06. 1 inch groups and probably could be better if a better shooter was shooting my rifle

My favorite pig rifle is the 30-30 side eject with a 4 power scope .

Very much enjoyed your video. And am in agreement I had placed a lot hope in the eld x and m by reading Nathan Fosters books. Now I pull toward the terminal acsent and bond strike, along with, still, toward Partions n Accubond. I'd like to try the HAWK bullets. I hear they hold together well. I was also hoping these new copper bullets with shedding tips, causing satilite projectiles with the remaining core punching on through would be the new partion, but it don't sound like it. If I do use M or X bullets, i want them very heavy for not only caliber but cartridge too.

In both 170 gr. 30-30 and 130 gr. 270, all the deer were knocked right down and died. They were all taken in thick cover (but clear shooting lanes) from 15 to 40 yards max. I'm of course not sure how they'd perform at longer ranges, but I never saw the need to experiment with anything else.

@@jessemccarthy05 Oh man, I used to love to bow hunt! Some of my fondest memories afield. I always hunted from the ground too. I wound up developing a bad shooting habit that I just could not break and had to give it up. Happy hunting to you. Be safe out there.

The best rifle, cartridge and bullet are what works for you. I am Canadian, in our thick woods all my shots have been under 250 yards. I've used the same rifle, cartridge and bullet for 15 years. A Remington 700 CDL in .308 Win with 150 grain Federal Fusion. Immediate expansion and deep penetration for those double lung shots. This works for all me and my family's needs, deer, elk, coyote, wolf, moose and bear.

Amen brother ! I have this argument at the gun counter quite often. . barns tsx , nosler accubonds , nosler partitions and federal terminal ascents are my top picks . I hunt elk in the trees and the last one i shot was a quartering towards at 20 feet , it drove through the front shoulder , through the lungs and exited . That was a 200 grain tsx loaded to 2850 out of my 325 wsm . The elk walked about 30 feet and fell over dead . I helped Guide a moose hunt this year and the guys showed up with Berger vld bullets . I told them this was a bad idea and guess what …the moose was hit and never recovered . Absolute garbage and a horrible way for our game animals to die .

One thing about long range hunting is that it used to be something you had to be supremely committed to. The original guys within the LRH scene ran guns that priced today would be around $5-6k. Due to this and many other factors these individuals had to have it all down to an art form and had to fully understand their limitations. I think a lot of folks get into the idea that a 6.5 PRC factory Christensen with premium ammo will produce similar results as the original LRH guys could obtain. The truth is that those products will never be able to because major manufacturers can not afford to put the effort that a gunsmith can put into a bespoke rifle and still charge a competitive($1k-2k)price. If anything we just need to cut through hype and help others understand the limitations of equipment.

The Orynx is a great bullet indeed. Unfortunately, they don't have a great selection of weights (unless you shoot 9.3); and Norma bullets are hard to get in the states and usually more expensive than Nosler or Barnes bullets. Probably why you don't see them used much in North America. But they are great bullets.

Thank you for the comprehensive view! Too often these videos compare 2 or 3 pills with little to no context. This was the whole forest!

I live in South Africa and use Sierra GK 130gr (270win) for everything from warthog to eland. Never lost a single animal that was hit. Ranges vary from 50m to 400m.

I use to run VLDs in all my guns but lost a waterbuck with a perfect shoulder shot at 40 yards. I switched to Accubonds for African hunting, I still love the VLDs for hunting out west for mule deer where 300-500 yard shots are very common.

This rule applies to all firearms, the projectile always does the work. It’s amazing people spend huge amounts of money and time on platform and optics. But not nearly as much time on ammunition selection.

Like one of my favourite KZreadr says the bullet is the cheapest part of the hunt. Rifle $600+ fuel cost hotel flights etc. Bullet $1. Well placed shot one dead animal and experience of the hunt priceless. Wounded animal with bad bullet performance heart breaking. Good video lots of information. Matching animal to caliber to bullet.

In Russia we have an interesting idea, basically a civilian version of 7Н1 sniper bullet. It is an FMJ bullet with two-piece core, forward piece is steel, bottom piece is lead. As it hits the hard tissue or bone, it tumbles and breaks apart in the body, so two cores might go independent from each other and deal heavy wounds to the target.

Great video i think velocity when using cup and core bullets is crucial on thin skin game staying below 3000 fps is a must. In the woods esp. I love the round nose bullets. Old school but at med velocitys are medicine on whitetails here in sc. The 220 grain inter lock at 2350 to 2400 in 30 06 is great without alot of meat damage. Hammer of thor. 180 grain 30 06 partition is my choice for all around hunting in almost any enviroment. I like how u stand against the long range unethical hunting with target grade ammo. Hunting at point blank range is the max i believe in. Learning to hunt and track animals qhould be taught more in hunter education class. I wish u would make some bear hunting caliber videos and some 45 70 reloading videos what a caliber its mean in the south eastern deer woods brother.

Every yard between you and the deer means less of a chance to take it down. Just because I can hit paper at 500 or 1,000 yards does not mean that I can hunt ethically beyond 200 yards! Granted, there are some bullets that will work a little farther, but I don't to ever wound a deer and have it die in agony because I could not find it!

Federal trophy bonded tipped, terminal long range, terminal ascent. All great, terminal ascent, best hunting bullet whether it be close or long. I am talking from experience on animals, not jugs or water, on elk. From 80 to 550 yards they perform perfectly. I have 5 recovered bullets that have perfect expansion and 95% weight retention.
