What is the best family vehicle? Suv or minivan?

I put the Toyota 4runner up against the Honda odyssey to see which is the best family vehicle.

As a maintenance technician that has worked out of both SUVs and minivans, the biggest van perk is the sliding side door. They allow you the full size door opening in tight parking lots or garages where an SUV relies on having enough room to swing the doors open all the way

I love the living space/access and Great MPG of the minivan, but want the clearance and durability of the SUV off-road. What is the solution? Lift for minivan even though it isn’t tough off road. Or is there a SUV that has sliding doors?

I’m a guy, a husband, and a father of two kids. I have a minivan. It’s the best all around vehicle to have, period. You don’t need a truck unless your going to tow something. You don’t need an suv unless your planning on going off-road. A minivan has more cargo space and can usually tow a small trailer if needed. I wanted to add that kids like to push and swing open those back doors which can potentially hit another car or object. Vans have doors that slide and can prevent that. Also they have better mpg than other 3 row big suvs and trucks.

Thanks for watching. I don’t doubt you being a father and guy..minivans are really good vehicles just really only good at one thing… people moving..it doesn’t have very good payload capacity and doesn’t tow very much but for road trips and getting kids to school etc it’s awesome..

The thing I'm getting out of this video is the van is passenger friendly while the SUV is driver friendly. The one thing that attracts me about the minivan is the floor can be made flat enough to lay out a mattress and camp in.

I have no kids and a SUV, but I’m in the market for a van. As a man, I know the stigma around driving a minivan. But if you have the self confidence, and not care what others think, you’ll realize the van is the way to go. I’ve rented vans for trips and realized their potential. Do you know how much room you can have with a girl in the back of a van?! Yes my SUV seats folds flat, but the ceiling height is low and the space is limited. A van is basically a hotel room on wheels.

Thanks for watching and for the input. Like I said in the video both vehicles are our family’s vehicles. Mine the 4runner and my wife’s the odyssey..we got the 4runner first and then outgrew it with our two kids and golden retriever. My wife swore she would never get a minivan. But after shopping around she got one. It def has a place in a family’s home. I personally would never consider a minivan if I did not have kids or was single. I know you say you would have a lot of room for activities with a woman in the back I just feel like you wouldn’t be able to get one back there as a man with a minivan. Sorry. Now if you use it for a job like a contractor etc they are great also.

Great video comparison. You hit on a lot of good things to consider. I'd like to add a few things I believe the minivan can due better then any other vehicle. We have an 01 DGC EX that we have owned since 2003. At that time we had four kids to which two were in car seats. I'm the primary driver and my wife likes to drive our 07 Toyota Camry. Over the years, I have moved bedroom furniture a few times. I'm talking full size dressers and beds. We have placed full size 8X4 sheets of plywood and 2x4 inside with just the 2nd and 3rd row seat backs folded down, with the rear hatch closed. I had to pick up a new full size upright freezer when our deep chess freezer stop working. It's so easy to get the kids and stuff in and out the rear sliding doors in parking lots. In the end though, both vehicles have their place in our society today.

But to jump to a 3l or 3.6l is a bit much I think. The only reason I'm considering these cars is coz of the interior and how the seats function. Our other options are : (minivan class)-Seat Alhambra, VW Sharan, Zafira C . Or even the full Van- eg, VW T5, mercedes Vclass etc. So basically we want the space.

  • @GReviewz

    @GReviewz

    3 жыл бұрын

That is a good question. The reason for the reliability rating issue is due to the earlier odyssey models. They had transmission issues. Another problem area is the dang sliding doors. They are powered and just a not al day of errands those things open a ton of times...some people have experienced motors going out or the pull cable snapping. All in all most odyssey’s you see on the road are great vehicles and have great reliability. I know multipolar people that have well over 200k miles on their odyssey’s...

How do you take your Golden with you? In a crate or just behind the 2nd row on 4runner? We are planning to get a new vehicle that is 'future-proof' that can haul 1 dog, 1 kid + 1 guest (+driver+passenger). I'm confused between a mini-van, a 3row suv or a pickup truck. Mini-van cannot take the dog with a guest&kid. A pickup would be great, when I put the dog in crate on the bed & store everything there, but it would be exposed to elements.. I grew up with a van and mom got an suv when I was in high school. We are scouts and go camping a lot so I was sad to loose all the trunk space but we now have 4wheel drive which is nicer from some camp roads. The van is definitely better for road trips since each captain seat has more space but it is doable in our suv. I wanted to see a comparison of the two since I am thinking of getting a van in a few years (when I have kids) and wanted to double check my opinion. While either can be a “family” vehicle the van is definitely the “mom” car (especially for homeschoolers) and the suv the “dad.” One of the big things I will shop for is best gas mileage since homeschoolers do A LOT of driving.

@@GReviewz Congratulations on Eagle, I’m a Summit the equivalent rank in the Venturing BSA program. There are many types of homeschooling but often the best way to do it is teaching through experiences. Field trips are a big part of many homeschooler’s lives and for us were about a once a week event, in addition to all the running around town for various errands and activities (plus the days we went to the park to do school instead of sitting inside). The term homeschool really just means your parents are in charge of your education instead of the government or other organization such as a private school. Some homeschoolers attempt to recreate a semblance of “real school” (as so many called it when I was a kid lol) but that is one of the least effective methods and most let go of that model within the first year. There were even two occasions we went to another state for a month due to family health and just continued our education without interruption. Basically “home”school means it is your household that determines your curriculum, that is why online charter school and “virtual” learning are not counted under the homeschool umbrella despite being “home-education”. Even if a homeschool family ends up choosing online or co-op classes for certain subjects the parents still have ultimate ruling on how their performance is graded for their “school.”

After some 30,000 miles in rugged country I can say that a Minivan probably could have done all of this 90% of the time. The bigger space and stealthy appearance is anothernfactor. Too bad that one can not increase the clearance on the Ody.

I think that minivans blow SUVs out of the ball game in terms of practicality. I’ve been a single dad of 4 for the majority of my life. I bought my first minivan when I was 19, I’ve had several of them for 25 years. I did downgrade to an Explorer but it didn’t work so I ended up trading it in on another Caravan a few months later. My Caravan is finally starting to need work and my youngest son is 22 so I think I’m done! I’m finally gonna downgrade to a smaller car after all these years!

I had a 99 Tahoe, 2004 Sequoia and 2006 Odyssey (drove it for 8 years and put 90,000 miles on it) You can make an SUV work as a family vehicle, but it doesn't hold a candle to minivan. I never understood the whole minivan femininity stigma thing. Conceptually, a minivan is a smaller van. My father has spent much of his adult life working jobs out of vans and box trucks, things like satellite tech, medical courier, construction worker, etc. He also coached a ton of youth sports when we were growing up, pretty much all of our teams, so he drove a minivan, including taking a big chunk of my youth soccer team to an out-of-state tournament one year. There's nothing inherently feminine about a minivan, it's a supremely practical vehicle. I once heard somebody mention that a minivan makes a great emergency vehicle as well because it can carry people comfortably to a hospital, carry food, water, and other supplies, etc. The main thing an SUV buys you is the ability to barely go off road, which is hardly the manliest thing ever. It's not like a dirt rally car or a dune buggy either, so when people say it has 4-wheel drive, what they mean is it can't even do what a mountain bike does.

Thank you for watching. I love the 4runner. It does have a lot of versatility. The minivan is better at people moving though in my opinion.

I agree. A vehicle will be best at what it's designed for. If I want to move people. I take the ody. If I want to tow or haul I bust our my cummins. If I wanna go off road I grab the keys to one of the jeeps

The only reason a family man would insist on a suv is if he's insecure and feels a minivan infringes on his glass thin masculinity. Minivans are awesome.

This is too obvious. The 4Runner is a 4WD truck. It has no room for family stuff. If you have kids in baby seat, you're going to wrench your back. There's absolutely no reason to buy a 4 runner if you have kids. Zero.

When Americans have 1 or 2 or 3 kids : Omg!!! I need a giant minivan! Omg i need a huge SUV! V6! V8!! Safety! Allot of space! When a european have 1 or 2 kids: well a hatchback is fine and practical enough when 3 kids.. well a compact stationwagon or a crossover or mpv is fine .. good gas mileage.. small turbo green label engine.. or hybrid or electric. Man even if we wanted those cars they don’t sell giant mini vans and suv’s like that here. Toyota don’t sell the Sienna and honda don’t sell the Odessy here. And those trucks. And suv’s never saw them. For us a large Suv is a bmw x5 or a hyundai santa fe. But also those cars you don’t see a average family drive them. And our mini van’s is the size of a Prius V

Yes Americans do seem to drive the biggest vehicles and maybe even has the most kids. I chalk it up to how our country is set up. Everything is so spread out and open. Of course we have big city’s but 90% of our country is rural. Which mean to get anywere from were I live is at least a 30 mile drive and that is on a 55 or 70mph rd. Also 80% of family’s here have two incomes. Wife and husband works. That being said family help each other out. Sometimes I am taking 6 kids home on a car pool. Try fitting those in eco box vehicle in seatbelt/car seats. Also being so far from stores etc o buy my grocery’s for the month. A months grocery’s for a family of 5 won’t fit in a small vehicle. Let’s not talk about a family vacation. My family consists of 5 people and a 85lb golden retriever. Again all the need bags etc for us won’t fit in a small vehicle. Most of Europe is smashed together so the above things that is American deal with you guys don’t. Plus we have so many large vehicles/18 wheelers on the road I like to give my family a fighting chance in a wreck.

Thanks for the fast response. This make sense. Plus our gas prices are expensive. €1,90 per liter. Today on the radio they said it got a new record. Imagine fill up a Chevrolet suv with a v8. And than €1,90 per liter.. reason of the high price is not enough gasoline. And high taxes. Plus we pay expensive roadtax. For a regular Prius i pay €65,00 per month on Roadtax. €60,00 insurance per month. And fill up the prius with gasoline costs me €70,00! You guys may drive a Dodge ram for that. But i now understand why you drive large cars. Also longer drives. Maybe more kids. More items.. when my dad was young he imported a Oldsmobile cutlass saloon. It was massive compared to all those small european cars. But also to expensive to own.

But on the other side.. when i was young and lived with my parents with my sister we did european road trips in a 1995 hyundai elantra with a 1.5 engine. With a small caravan behind it. Thousands of kilometers 3 weeks long. Best time ever. And it all fits in the little sedan

Yeah the gas prices are crazy over there..if the fuel prices were that expensive here none of us could even afford to go to work..here is a link of my current truck and in the first part of the video it shows how much we pack for a week long trip..kzread.info/dash/bejne/pKhrsdOAotffZJM.html

Yes but have the feeling they lying to us. Because they gave the reason: not enough gasoline in storage in america. I know this is not true because you guys paying a low price because you have enough gasoline. They just want us drivers to pay for this crisis back.
